FAQs

  • Q: Can deco micro cement be applied on laminated floors?
    • A: No, deco MicroCement is not suitable for laminated floors due to movement issues.
  • Q: What should be done for fine hairline cracks on the surface?
    • A: It is recommended to apply at least one coat of Decco Flex Membrane when fine hairline cracks are exposed to ensure durability.

This booklet is designed to guide you through the full process of achieving a strong, durable, and stain-resistant MicroCement surface There are several deco MicroCements in the range, so make sure you follow the guidance that applies to the products.

Surface Preparation

  • Whilst MicroCement is very strong, smooth, and flexible, it relies entirely on the surface that it’s going onto. Golden rules for proper surface preparation:
  • The surface should be completely smooth – as if you were going to paint onto them. Use deco Basecoat to smooth out the current substrate
  • microcement can be applied on concrete, tiles, glass, metal, screed, and MDF boards but not on laminated floors due to movement issues.
  • The substrate must be clean, dry, cured, and free of oil, grease, wax, dirt, varnish, shellac, or any contaminant that might act as a bond breaker.
  • Cracking caused by drying shrinkage and thermal shrinkage will be active cracks at the beginning but may eventually stabilize and become dormant. These cracks should be filled with a suitable proprietary filler.
  • The cracks may be v-cut with a concrete crack chaser and filled with suitable material.
  • Fine hairline cracks may not need any repairs however, these cracks may prove to be a future durability problem. It’s recommended to apply at least one coat of decco Flex Membrane when fine hairlines are exposed.

Listed below, are some of the more common surfaces with an explanation of how best to prepare them:

  • TILES:
    • Make sure tiles are not drummy or loose.
    • Fill grout lines with decco Basecoat (Single Component or Ready to Use versions) so that the surface is completely flat and leveled
  • CEMENT BOARDS, COMPOSITE TIMBER BOARDS AND PLASTER BOARDS:
    • Make sure the boards are firmly glued and screwed in place. Countersunk screw holes. Fill joints between boards and screw holes with decco Basecoat (Single Component or Ready to Use versions).
    • Sub-Floors: The subfloor must either be solid hardwood flooring, a minimum of ¾” tongue-and-groove, APA–rated, Type 1, exterior exposure plywood, OSB equivalent or cement board. The subfloor should be solid and fixed securely to provide a rigid base. Any boards exhibiting movement should be renailed. The surface of the wood must be clean and free of oil, grease, wax, dirt, varnish, shellac, or any contaminant that might act as a bond breaker.

WET ROOMS:

For constructing a wet room with a focus on durability and aesthetics here is a detailed approach:

  1. Choose a Hard Shower Tray Suitable for MicroCement and Vinyl Floors: Select a shower tray made from materials that can firmly bond with MicroCement. This ensures a seamless and integrated look while maintaining water resistance and durability.
  2. Firmly Fix the Shower Tray in Place: Secure the shower tray firmly to prevent any movement. Movement can lead to cracks and gaps, compromising the waterproofing integrity of the wet room. Use appropriate adhesives and fastening methods as recommended by the shower tray manufacturer, ensuring it align well with the flooring choice.
  3. Board Shower Area Walls Down to the Shower Tray: Install wall boards from the top of the shower area down to the edge of the shower tray. This creates a continuous surface for tiling or finishing and aids in waterproofing. Ensure the boards are compatible with wet room environments, being water resistant or waterproof.
  4. Ensure Boards are Firmly Fixed: The wall boards must be securely attached to the wall studs or framework. Use corrosion-resistant screws or appropriate fasteners, spacing them as per the board manufacturer’s recommendations. This step is crucial to prevent any movement or warping of the boards, which could lead to gaps or cracks.
  5. Silicone the Joint Between the Boards and the Shower Tray/Floors: Apply a bead of high-quality silicone sealant along the joint where the bottom of the boards meets the shower tray and where the floor meets the shower tray. This sealant acts as a waterproof barrier, preventing water from seeping behind the walls or under the flooring.
  6. Do Not Smooth Out the Silicone: After applying the silicone, resist the urge to smooth it out. Leave it to dry and cure overnight, forming a solid seal. The silicone should maintain its shape and volume to ensure a tight seal.
  7. Razor Scrape Off the Excess Silicone: Once the silicone is fully dried, use a razor blade or a sharp knife to carefully scrape off any excess. This step ensures a clean, professional finish. It’s important to perform this action carefully to avoid damaging the sealant’s integrity or the adjacent surfaces.
  8. Avoid Leaving Silicone on the Surface: Ensure that no silicone residue is left on the surface of the boards, shower tray, or floor. Silicone can collect dirt and degrade the aesthetic of your wet room over time. Clean any residues with a suitable solvent that does not damage the surface.

PAINTED OR PLASTERED WALLS:

  • Must be completely dry.
  • Sand off any loose paint or imperfections.
  • Then just go straight on to plastered or painted walls with decco Primer.

CONCRETE AND SCREEDS:

  • Must be fully cured. Ensure that external areas are watertight and check the level of moisture. If the level of moisture is medium to high (25% to 100%) please apply decco Moisture Barrier.
  • Shot Blast to CSP 3 yields an aggressive surface for the epoxy to tenaciously bond to apply decco
  • Moisture Barrier. Let dry for 4-6 hours or until you can walk on the surface without leaving marks.
  • Apply a second coat of the decco Epoxy Moisture Barrier and broadcast 20 mesh sand into that coat to rejection. From there, clean up the excess sand and apply the micro cement.
  • Repair cracks before MicroCement installation.

HEATING FLOORS:

  • Ensure underfloor heating has been through a full cycle before installation. Turn off 48 hours before applying MicroCement. Leave it off until 48 hours after the installation.

FOLLOW MANUFACTURER INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

  • Do not skip any step of the MicroCement installation and do not mix products from different suppliers, as there is no warranty on how the products will react with each other MicroCement products are pre-dosed, and when used properly they guarantee high quality and durability.

LABOR FORCE

  • It is not recommended to install MicroCement on a wide area above 400-500 SF (40-50 SQM) on your own. Always consider at least a team of 3 installers for every 1,000 SF (100 SQM)
  • The most skilled people should be focused on the finishing coats. This is where you will choose how you want the result to look—smooth and even, rough and rustic, or somewhere in between.
  • Beginners can assist in the mixing process and/or installing the Basecoat
  • Being a seamless coating solution, it is always crucial to do every single coat in one shot. Avoid applying fresh material over dry, as that could create overlaps, exposing color variations

UNINTERRUPTED CURING PROCESS:

  • You might think that once you’ve applied the final coat of sealer, the process is done. But it is not, The most crucial step for a successful and long-lasting MicroCement floor is its uninterrupted curing process
  • If the topcoat and the micro cement don’t have enough time to bond and dry, your efforts could end up in a bin. This means you have to stay away from the area where you applied the MicroCement for a minimum of 1 day (low traffic) to 3 days (no high traffic or placing items on the fresh
  • MicroCement) to ensure the curing process runs its full course Curing period can vary considerably depending on room temperature, with top coats sealers and MicroCement full performance being achieved after 21 days.
  • And finally, make sure you use a breathable, impact-resistant floor cover to protect the floor from potential damages caused by any ongoing construction works.

Mixing Instructions & Application

  1. PRIME & WATERPROOF
    • Use a medium pile roller to apply an even coat of decco Primer to the surface.
    • Replace the decco Primer for the decco Flex Membrane when waterproofing and crack isolation are required.
    • It is recommended for use between bonded or un-bonded topping slabs where slab cracking and movement are a problem.
    • decco Flex Membrane must be used beneath ceramic tile, marble, quarry tile, below grade, between slab, and under composition floors and decks.
  2. BASECOAT
    • BaseCoat, available in a single component or Ready versions, is a Polymeric Cementitious System suitable for leveling irregular or damaged surfaces, covering tiles, and preparing the surface adding extra strength to MicroCement finishing coats.
    • It may also be used as a finished product thanks to its refined aesthetic textured design. It can be applied on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, accessories, interior or exterior, on both new substrates and over existing coatings such as tile.
    • The better you prepare the decco Basecoat, the easier it will be to achieve the desired MicroCement finish. Make sure that the Basecoat has fully covered the tiles and/or the fiberglass mesh in case of use.

  4. PROTECTIVE TOPCOATS – decco Eco Seal & Ultra Seal
    • decco Eco Seal WB Acrylic Sealer – Application Process:
    1. decco Eco Seal as a Base Layer: Applying Eco Seal as the initial layer serves multiple purposes. As a one-component sealer, it is designed to penetrate the substrate, providing a strong bond and preparing the surface for further coating. Its formulation may also include properties that enhance the color of the underlying material or maintain its original hue, preventing discoloration that can sometimes occur with sealing products. The application of one coat of decco Eco Seal is recommended.
    2. Increased Open Time: The “open time” refers to the period during which the applied product remains workable before it begins to set or cure. Using decco Eco Seal can extend this open time for the subsequent application of decco Ultra Seal. This is particularly beneficial in ensuring a smooth, even application, allowing for adjustments or corrections before the sealer begins to harden.
    3. Uniform Color Maintenance: decco Eco Seal’s properties can help in preserving the natural or applied color of the surface before the application of additional coats. This is essential for aesthetic consistency, especially in visible areas where color changes could be undesirable. The sealer acts to lock in the color, ensuring that subsequent layers do not alter the appearance.
    • decco Ultra Seal WB Polyurethane Sealer:
    1. Following the base layer of decco Eco Seal, the application of two coats of Ultra Seal provides a robust protective barrier. Ultra Seal likely offers additional waterproofing, durability, and possibly enhanced resistance to wear and chemical exposure. The two coats ensure full coverage and optimum performance.
    • NOTE: It is recommended to apply a 3rd coat on Wet Rooms/Showers.
    1. Compatibility and Performance: The combined use of Eco Seal and Ultra Seal suggests that these products are formulated to be compatible with each other, enhancing their performance when used together. This compatibility is crucial for ensuring that the sealers adhere well to each other and the substrate, providing a continuous, impermeable layer.
    2. Consistency in Application: Using products from a similar product line or manufacturer designed to work together can often simplify the application process. It ensures that the products will not react negatively with each other and that the application instructions will be designed to complement each stage of the process. For best results, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for surface preparation, application, drying, and curing times. Proper preparation and application are key to achieving a durable, effective seal that will protect the surface and maintain its aesthetic appeal over time.
    • decco Ultra Seal Polyurethane Mixing Instructions and Application:
    • Step 1: Mix decco Ultra Seal WB Two-component Polyurethane Sealer @ 10:1 ratio.
    • Step 2: Roll the 1st coat of decco Ultra Seal WB Polyurethane and let it cure for about 6 hours.
    • Step 3: Roll 2nd coat of decco Ultra Seal WB Polyurethane and let cure for Light Traffic (6 hours) & High Traffic (24 hours).
    • NOTE : Ultra Seal WB Polyurethane Sealer is best applied with a high-quality, 1⁄4-inch short nap roller. Microfiber applicator pad, or T-bar applicator, followed by a spiked roller
    • COLORS & TEXTURES
    • MicroCement contains natural minerals therefore colors and textures may vary between batches and product lines.
    • Some advanced techniques (not covered here) are required to achieve some of the micro cement textures that you may have seen in our communications. Get in touch for more information or training.
    • CURING TIMES
    • All drying times mentioned in this booklet are for guidance only. Curing times may vary depending on temperature and humidity. Do not lay MicroCement in temperatures lower than 50°F (10°C) and higher than 95°F (35°C)
    • CARING FOR MICROCEMENT SURFACES
    • Dragging heavy objects over the surface, or dropping them onto the surface is not recommended, as damage could occur.
    • Lift furniture rather than dragging it, and use lids or felt pads to protect flooring from pressure points or abrasive surfaces.
    • For hard or sharp-tipped chairs, tables, benches, etc., please utilize felt or soft tip attachments to avoid scratching and premature wear of the top coat.
    • DO NOT USE Green, brown, or black floor pads, Nylon-Grit or Strata-Grit rotary brushes, high alkaline cleaners, degreasers, strippers, or high-pressure washer equipment.
    • Prolonged exposure to water: If water is trapped against the surface for a prolonged length of time it may stain and potentially cause the MicroCement to blister. It is not advisable to leave wet towels, plant pots, or wet shampoo bottles in direct, prolonged contact with the MicroCement
    • Acidic or alkaline products like vinegar, lemon juice, or bleach, leave slight marks on MicroCement if left on the surface for a prolonged time, if cleaning is done quickly, they won’t stain.
    • If water stains appear within the 1st 4 weeks of use, let the stain dry out & reseal immediately. Stains will become permanent if not treated quickly.
    • MicroCement surfaces can be cleaned with any pH-neutral cleaning products.
    • AFTERCARE: It is highly recommended to use the decco Wax Finish Floor for proper maintenance. It extends the durability of the pavement by creating extra overprotection to the polyurethane. The wax will renew the sealer, smooth its surface, and fill any cavities. You do not need to sand the surface and apply a new coat of sealer, regular waxing is usually enough.
