Class Description
If you want to learn the basics of sewing, the Learn to Sew Pillowcase class instructed by Mel Draper is perfect for you. This class aims to build confidence in sewing fundamentals and is designed for absolute beginners with no prior sewing experience required. Participants will learn to make a simple pillowcase and will cover techniques such as rotary cutting, long pinning, 1/4 inch seams, French seams, and backstitching.

Supplies
A copy of the free pattern will be provided to students during the class. Additionally, Cloth Carousel offers a 10% discount on supplies purchased for this class. It is recommended to have the book “Jump Into Sewing” as a reference for sewing in general and for practicing new sewing skills.

If you want to learn the basics of sewing, this is the class for you! Join Mel and learn to make this simple pillowcase. The goal of this class is to build your confidence in sewing fundamentals. This class is for absolute beginners, no sewing experience is necessary. The best part about making your own pillowcase is you get to choose the fabric. This is a great gift project as well! This class will cover more rotary cutting, long pinning, 1/4 inch seams, French seams and backstitching. A copy of the free pattern will be provided to students at class. This book is a fantastic reference for sewing in general and includes several cute projects for you to practice your new sewing skills!

Fabric/Notions for this project:

  • 3/4 yard main fabric
  • 1/8 yard accent fabric
  • 1/3 yard cuff fabric

The following supply list is going to give you a nice all-around sewing kit that will allow you to complete each project in the series as well as sew at home!

General Sewing Supply List:

  • Sewing Machine – always have your foot pedal, extra bobbins and sewing needles!
  • 18 x 24 self-healing cutting mat
  • 6×24 inch creative grids ruler
  • 45mm rotary cutter
  • Knife edge sewing shears 7-8 inches long (preferably Gingher or Mundial)

For at-home sewing, you will want to make sure you have an iron and ironing board. These are provided in class.
