Measure the front door top to bottom and record. Divide the height of your front door by 1/3 to 1/4. Look for a light fixture that measures that range in height. This will give you the appropriate sizing so your fixture is not too large or small for this placement.

Example:

• Door measures 80″ tall
• 1/3 equation: 80/3=26″
• 1/4 equation: 80/4=20″
• Desired fixture would be between 20-26″ tall

Do it yourself:

Over dining table

Allow for 28″-32″ of space between the table surface and the bottom of the lighting fixture. Also allowing for 12″ of space from the edge to avoid bumping fixture when sitting or getting up.

Over table

The diameter of the fixture should be 12″ less than the width of the table to avoid bumping.

Center of room

Measure the length (A) and Width (B) of the room and add numbers together. To achieve a balanced look, the diameter of the fixture should be no larger than 1/12 of that number.

Example:

Measurement Length (A): 144″ Measurement Width (B): 244″
A+B=C (388)
1/12 equation: 388/12=32″ diameter

Hallway

The keeping the line of sight in one line is key. Hallways with a higher ceiling should utilize a lower hanging light fixture. There should be at least 7′ of clearance between the floor and the bottom of the fixture.

Foyer

A foyer hanging fixture should be a minimum of 80″-84″ from floor to bottom of fixture. if the foyer is two stories high, the fixture should hang no lower than the second floor. If there is a window above the two story foyer, the fixture should be centered in the window if visible from outside if possible.

Kitchen Island

Fixtures should be placed 72″ above the floor or 28″-34″ above the countertop. Note. fixtures should be high enough to not shine light directly into occupants eyes.
