Installation and Maintenance
The filter must be installed in the suction line between the storage tank and burner. It may be installed either at the tank or at the burner where it will protect the fuel pump and burner nozzle from impurities in the fuel oil. On underground storage tanks, the filter may be installed in the suction line where it enters the building.
On two-pipe systems (suction and return), the oil flow through the filter is full pump capacity. On the one pipe system, the oil flow is equal to the nozzle capacity. It may be necessary to replace the spin-on filter more often in a two pipe system because of the higher flow rate.
Installation
- Turn off electricity to burner and close shut-off valve in fuel line.
- Install filter between shut-off valve and burner with spin-on filter down. Oil flow through filter should be as indicated by words “IN” and “OUT” on filter head.
- Install 3/8″ steel pipe (not included) or brass fittings (not included) as required to make transition to fuel line. Use an oil resistant pipe joint compound on all pipe threads. Tighten all fittings using two wrenches.
- Open fuel shut-off valve. Place a container under filter and remove vent screw until oil shows at the vent port. Replace vent screw and check all connections for leaks.
- Prime fuel pump, if necessary, and run burner for approximately 10 minutes. Re-check all connections for leakage.
Changing Spin-On Filter
The spin-on filter should be replaced at the beginning of each heating season.
- Turn off the electricity to burner and close shut-off valve in fuel line.
- Place a container under filter, loosen spin-on filter by turning counterclockwise and remove.
- Check old filter to see that gasket was removed with filter and not adhered to the head casting.
- Spin on new filter by turning clockwise, tighten 3/4 turn after gasket contact.
- Open fuel shut-off valve and remove vent screw until oil shows at the vent port. Replace vent screw and check all connections for leaks.
- Run burner and check filter for leakage.
