COMMON OPERATION
OPTIONAL ADD-ON PRODUCTS
The BA31 has 2 optional, add-on products that can be used in conjunction with
BA31 to further enhance the CM5908 radio.
- Display+: An enhanced LCD display that enables a more intuitive and extensible interface
- Amp+: An enhanced amplifier module that brings powerful Class-D amplification, subwoofer and line outputs, audio DSP, and more to the CM5908.
The BA31 can be used alone, with Display+, with Amp+, or with both Display+
and Amp+. Differences in behavior will be called out where applicable.
SOURCE SELECTION
With the kit installed, your radio now has 3 possible audio sources: tuner
(AM, FM, WB), Bluetooth, and a 3.5mm auxiliary input. To cycle through the
sources, press and release the volume knob.
CONNECTING BLUETOOTH
Factory+ kits don’t require any special “pairing” mode to enter before
connecting a mobile device. Instead, the kit is always ready to connect
whenever a device is not already connected. To do so, open your device’s
Bluetooth settings and connect to “Cantaloupe Radio BA31”.
DISCONNECT & RECONNECT
In Bluetooth mode, a long press (>1sec) on the volume knob triggers one of two
actions: if a device is connected, it will be disconnected; if no device is
connected, the radio will attempt to reconnect a previously-connected device.
Note this happens automatically when the radio is powered on.
PLAYBACK CONTROLS
In Bluetooth mode, playback can be controlled from the radio using the 4-way
directional button and the 2/PROG button:
- Play/Pause – 2/PROG
- Next Track – UP
- Previous Track – DOWN
- Rewind – LEFT
- Fast-Forward – RIGHT
Note that depending on the currently-playing application on the mobile device, Rewind/Fast-Forward may behave differently (continuous scrub vs. skip ahead/back) or not be supported.
COMMON OPERATION AND OEM DISPLAY
VOICE ASSISTANT Your mobile device’s voice assistant can be invoked directly
from the radio by pressing the 1/EJ button in Bluetooth mode. After a short
delay, your assistant’s chime will play to indicate it is now listening for
your command. Say your command and the assistant will respond. To dismiss the
assistant at any time, press the 1/EJ button again.
CALL HANDLING
When an incoming phone call is ringing, you can answer the call by press- ing
the 2/PROG button. To reject an incoming call, press the 1/EJ button. During a
call, it can be ended by pressing the 2/PROG button again. AUTOMATIC SOURCE
SWITCH FOR CALLS
To ensure an incoming call is not missed, the radio will automatically switch
to Bluetooth if a call comes in while another source is selected. When the
call is ended, rejected, or missed, the radio will return to the previously
selected source.
OEM DISPLAY
When using the BA31 with the original radio LCD display, a limited amount of
feedback is shown on screen and described below:
TUNER
Tuner operation and display works identically to original.
BLUETOOTH
In Bluetooth mode, the MTL indicator in the display shows the Bluetooth
connection state:
Blinking: Disconnected
On: Connected
The display will show either a “1” or “2” depending on the playback state:
- Playing
- Paused
AUX
In aux mode, the MTL indicator will be off and a “1” will always be shown.
DOLBY ® NOISE REDUCTION
When using the OEM display, It is still possible to engage Dolby Noise
Reduction in Bluetooth and aux mode. However, this should NOT be enabled as it
causes decreased audio clarity.
It is disabled by default, but if a icon is shown on the display, press the 3
button to disable it.
DISPLAY+ OPERATION & SETTINGS
The next sections describe functionality with the Display+ module installed in
place of the OEM display.
TUNER
When the tuner source is selected, the radio operates identically to original
with a slightly reorganized display.
DISPLAY MODES
There are 3 display modes to choose from to suit your visual appetite. This
selection affects the display appearance during Bluetooth and aux use.
To cycle through display modes, press the 5 button while in Bluetooth or aux
mode.
In Rich mode, the track title & artist will scroll once when changed and can
be scrolled at any time by pressing the 6 button. The playback status is shown
in the lower left corner.
In Minimal mode, only the playback status is shown in the center, with
connection status shown in the lower left.
In Spectrum mode, a 14-band real-time audio spectrum view is shown in the main
area with playback status in the lower left.
SETTINGS
While in Bluetooth or aux mode, press the BAND button to bring up the settings
menu. Use the 4-way direction button to navigate the menu. UP & DOWN move
through possible categories, settings, and values, while LEFT & RIGHT drill
into or out of a category or setting. Settings navigation and descriptions are
given below.
DISABLE HANDS-FREE CALLING
BAND > Setting > General > Disable Hands-Free Calling For a completely factory
look, you may prefer to not install the clip-on microphone in the vehicle. If
so, disable this setting so the radio does not interfere with phone calls or
voice assistant on the mobile device. A power cycle of the radio is required
for this to take effect.
DISPLAY+ ABOUT & UTILITIES

The About section provides pieces of static info about the product such as
model, serial number, and firmware version.
UTILITIES
A few miscellaneous system utility functions are also available under the
“Utility” menu of settings.
FACTORY RESET
BAND > Utility > Factory Reset
Executing a factory reset causes the device to return to its factory shipping
state.
This includes the following changes:
- Reset of all device settings to default values
- Deletion of all Bluetooth device pairings
- Deletion of any diagnostics logs stored on device
After selecting this utility, you must confirm intent to factory reset the
device by following on-screen instructions, then power cycle the radio to
reconnect.
DISPLAY TEST
BAND > Utility > Display Test
This allows you to test your Display+ unit. Upon entering this utility, all
LCD dots are turned on. Exit the utility by pressing LEFT.
LED TEST
BAND > Utility > LED Test
This utility turns on all LEDs on the front face of the radio to test hardware
functionality.
This includes a green LED behind number buttons1-6 as well as the LED bar
above the IR slider.
In this bar, there should be 8 amber dots lit on each side of the green center
dot.
Note this utility is only available with Amp+ installed.
AMP+
The remaining sections of the manual cover additional functionality and features enabled with the Cantaloupe Radio CM5908 Amp+ kit installed in the radio.
INSTALLATION
Amp+ installation takes place in 2 parts: radio-installation and vehicle-
installation.
Radio-installation consists of replacing the OEM amplifier assembly inside the
radio with our Amp+ assembly.
This portion of the install is a radio-send-in service we perform at our
facility.
The second part is the vehicle installation, where the end user or shop
reinstalls the modified radio in the vehicle. This part we’ll cover next.
Before continuing with this portion on the install, ALWAYS disconnect the
vehicle battery.
PACKAGE CONTENTS
When your modified radio is returned, you’ll receive the following in your
package related to Amp+:
- Your CM5908 radio with Amp+ installed
- Amp+ wiring harness
- BMW “Premium Sound” adapter harness (if ordered)
The diagram on the following page shows the new connection points on the rear of the radio with Amp+ installed.
PREMIUM SOUND ADAPTER
If your E30 was equipped with the “Premium Sound” option that included the trunk-mounted booster amp, the trunk amp MUST be bypassed to function properly and avoid damaging Amp+. Additionally, premium sound cars were wired in such a way that there was only 1 wire per speaker connected to the back of the radio with a shared ground between all speakers (as opposed to a more conventional +/- pair per speaker). This also MUST be converted to a standard 2-wire-per- speaker setup for Amp+ operation. The optional Premium Sound Amp+ adapter harness we offer takes care of both of these. Follow the instructions included with the adapter harness to perform this step BEFORE proceeding.
HARNESS INSTALL
The Amp+ harness is designed to be as plug-n-play as possible when installing
in an E30. The diagram on page 11 shows the various connections to be made
between the Amp+ harness and the vehicle chassis harness:
- 2-pin 12V IGN / GND plug
- 2-pin ILLUMINATION / MEMORY plug (note the MEMORY wire is in- tentionally absent from this plug in the Amp+ harness)
- 1-pin POWER ANTENNA plug
- (4) 2-pin speaker plugs
Additionally, the 4 main speaker line level RCA outputs and a 3.5mm stereo line-level aux input jack are in the harness for appropriate audio con- nections. See page 12 for 12V CONSTANT power wire installation.
AMP+ REAR PANEL
- Main Harness Connector: The main Amp+ harness carries all power wires, speaker outputs, main speaker RCA line outputs, aux input, and remote amp turn-on wire.
- Subwoofer RCA Line Output: A dedicated, mono subwoofer output on the rear allows connection to an external subwoofer amp.
- 3.5mm Microphone Input: Attachment for included microphone used during hands-free calling and voice assistance
- CD Changer DIN Connector: The factory DIN connector for the op- tional CD changer remains available on the rear panel and fully func- tional.
- Antenna Connector: The connection point for the vehicle antenna remains unchanged from factory.
- Factory Calibration Port: From the factory, a small RF connector extended through this hole in the heat sink to allow for factory tuner calibration. The connector has no use to the end-user and must be removed during Amp+ radio installation. The hole will now be empty.
AMP+ HARNESS CONNECTIONS
AMP+ INSTALLATION
CHASSIS HARNESS DIFFERENCES
The diagram at left shows the wire functions and connections to be made
between the Amp+ harness and the chassis harness. With the E30’s long
production run and various sound options, this is not a one-size fits all
diagram. Shown here is an example late-model chassis harness without the
premium sound option. Please consult BMW wiring diagrams to match up
functionality to your specific car’s wiring, or contact Cantaloupe Radio if
you are unsure.
As mentioned, you MUST use an Amp+ Premium Sound adapter harness if any of
your chassis speaker plugs have only 1-wire connected and/or yourcar has a
factory trunk-mounted amp.
12V CONSTANT WIRE
The high power of Amp+ requires additional current beyond what the factory
radio power wiring can supply. Additional power is sourced by teeing into the
cigarette lighter circuit. The Amp+ harness makes this plug-nplay for E30s.
Follow the steps below:
- Remove the cigarette lighter trim assembly from the lower dash to gain access to the rear of the cigarette lighter.
- Run the long yellow wire of the Amp+ harness down the left side of the center control stack to the cigarette lighter. You’ll likely need to loosen the lower dash trim in this area to snake the wire down.
- Disconnect the positive terminal (yellow/red wire) from the back of the cigarette lighter.
- Connect the right-angle female spade terminal from the yellow wire of the Amp+ harness to the back of the cigarette lighter.
- Insert the male spade terminal from the yellow wire of the Amp+ harness into the positive terminal removed from the cigarette lighter in step3.
- Reinstall trim
AMP TURN-ON
The Amp+ harness features a remote amp turn-on wire. This wire should be
connected to the REMOTE input of any external amplifiers used. From the
factory, the Amp+ harness has a heat-shrink cap over this wire. If not using
an external amp, leave as-is, otherwise cut the capped end off to add your
connection of choice.
AMP+ SETTINGS
The remaining sections cover radio functionality with Amp+ installed.
SETTINGS
Several additional audio configuration & DSP settings become available with
Amp+ installed. As with other settings, adjustment of these settings can be
performed on-screen if Display+ is installed, or via the Dashboard app in
either case. These settings’ navigation and descriptions are covered next.
OUTPUT LOCATION
BAND > Setting > Audio > Output Location
This setting allows the user to chose where the 4 main speaker outputs are
sent. By default, this is set to Speaker. In this case, speaker-level outputs
are sent to the harness speaker wires. If you’ll be using Amp+ with an
external 4-channel amp for the main speakers, you’ll need to change this to
Line, which configures 4V RMS (max) signals to be sent out the front & rear
stereo RCA jacks in the harness. Note that a power cycle of the radio is
required after changing this setting to take effect.
Also note that the subwoofer RCA line out is always enabled regardless of this
setting.
FADER / BALANCE
BAND > Setting > Audio > Fader
BAND > Setting > Audio > Balance
Standard fader and balance controls can be edited in settings to position the
sound in the vehicle.
SUBWOOFER LEVEL BAND
Setting > Audio > Subwoofer > Level
The output strength of the subwoofer line out signal can be adjusted from -24 dB to 0 dB. 0 dB corresponds to a 4V RMS (max) output level. The setting defaults to -12 dB. We recommend adjusting the input gain on your subwoofer amp to your nominal desired volume with this default -12 dB output level to allow fine tuning the level from the radio menu as content or driving conditions change.
SUBWOOFER LEVEL BAND
> Setting > Audio > Subwoofer > Level
The output strength of the subwoofer line out signal can be adjusted from -24
dB to 0 dB. 0 dB corresponds to a 4V RMS (max) output level. The setting
defaults to -12 dB. We recommend adjusting the input gain on your subwoofer
amp to your nominal desired volume with this default -12 dB output level to
allow fine tuning the level from the radio menu as content or driving
conditions change.
CROSSOVER FREQUENCY
BAND > Setting > Audio > Subwoofer > Crossover Frequency
This sets the crossover frequency for the optional subwoofer low-pass filter
as well as the optional main-speaker high-pass filter. Crossovers are
implemented as 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters.
SUBWOOFER LOW-PASS ENABLE
BAND > Setting > Audio > Subwoofer > Sub Low-Pass Enable
Enabling this setting turns on the low-pass filter applied to the subwoofer
line out signal according to chosen crossover frequency above.
SPEAKER HIGH-PASS ENABLE
BAND > Setting > Audio > Subwoofer > Speaker High-Pass Enable
Enabling this setting turns on the high-pass filter applied to the 4 main
speaker output signals according to the chosen crossover frequency. In
practice, this should only be enabled when a subwoofer is installed.
5-BAND EQUALIZER
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ
A 5-band parametric equalizer is available to further tailor the sound to the
vehicle. EQ controls are described next.
BASS
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ > Bass > Gain
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ > Bass > Corner Frequency
This low-shelf filter can be used to boost or cut bass frequencies according
to the selected corner frequency and gain.
LOW-MID / MID / MID-HI
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ > [band] > Gain
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ > [band] > Center Frequency
These 3 middle filter bands allow you to boost or cut around a configurable
center frequency.
TREBLE
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ > High > Gain
BAND > Setting > Audio > EQ > High > Corner Frequency
This high-shelf filter can be used to boost or cut treble frequencies
according to the selected corner frequency and gain.
ANTENNA UP CONDITION
BAND > Setting > General > Antenna Up Condition
This setting allows you to control when the power antenna is raised. This
defaults to Powr On for factory-like behavior where the antenna is raised
whenever the radio is powered on. Change this to Tuner to only raise the
antenna when listening to the tuner specifically.
SLIDER AUDIO MENU
The radio’s IR slider can be used to adjust a common subset of previously
mentioned audio settings. Like the factory behavior, bring a finger to the IR
slider or press the MODE button to pull up this menu. Short press MODE to
cycle to the next setting, long-press MODE to reset all audio EQ controls to
default. Additional settings are available in this menu compared to factory.
Each setting’s on-screen text and its mapped setting are given below:
SUB LVL : | Subwoofer Level (-12dB = center) |
---|---|
BASS : | EQ Bass Gain |
MID : | EQ Mid Gain |
TREBLE : | EQ High Gain |
FADER : | Fader Setting |
