SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Even though all the safety instructions in this Owner’s Guide are important and should be read and understood before using this appliance, these are some of the more important user instructions. Failure to comply could result in a fire, property damage, or personal injury.

This appliance is for outdoor use only and should never be left unattended. Constant supervision is necessary.
Never operate this appliance within 10 feet (3m) of any structure, extended awnings, combustible material, or other LP cylinder. Never operate this appliance within 25 feet (7.5m) of any flammable liquid.
Read all the operating instructions before lighting the burner. If ignition does not occur in 5 seconds, turn the burner control OFF, wait 5 minutes, and repeat the lighting procedure.
Do not fill a cooking pot beyond its maximum capacity.
Never allow oil or grease to smoke or get hotter than 400° F (200° C). If this happens, immediately turn the burner and gas supply OFF.
Hot cooking liquids remain at dangerous temperature levels long after the burner is OFF. Never touch the appliance until liquids have cooled to 115° F (45° C) or less. Do not move or put the appliance into storage until it is cool to the touch.
If a fire should occur, immediately move away from the appliance and call your local fire department. Do not attempt to extinguish an oil or grease fire with water.
Disconnect the LP cylinder whenever this appliance is not in use.

The appliance is intended to be used with a pressure regulator and hose assembly designed for an LP cylinder Type 1 connection. Do not use any other type of gas regulator or LP cylinder. The appliance does not include an LP cylinder.

Propane Gas Hazard

DANGER

If you smell gas:

Shut off gas to the appliance.

Carefully open the cooker lid.

Carbon Monoxide Hazard

Combustion of propane gas produces poisonous carbon monoxide gas that can build up to dangerous levels in enclosed areas. Breathing carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness, brain damage, and death. Never use the appliance in an enclosed or partially enclosed area.

Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, which makes it difficult to detect. Most cases of carbon monoxide poisoning are due to inadequate ventilation or poor maintenance of the appliance.

Early symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can mimic many common ailments and may easily be confused with food poisoning, viral infections, flu, or simple tiredness. Symptoms to watch for include:

headaches or dizziness
breathlessness
nausea
loss of consciousness
tiredness
pains in the chest or stomach
erratic behavior
visual problems

General Operating Safety

Failure to comply with the following safety instructions could result in serious injury and possibly even death.

Outdoor Use Only

Do NOT use this appliance indoors. This appliance shall be used only outdoors, and shall not be used in a building, garage, or any other enclosed area. A fryer or boiler shall not be used on or under any apartment or condominium balcony or deck.

Not a Source of Heat

NEVER use this appliance as a heat source. It is not intended as a source of heat, nor should it be used as a heater.

No Unattended Use

Never leave the appliance unattended. Even with low flame, heat will build up quickly and may ignite foods or other combustible material.

No Unauthorized Modifications

No Unauthorized Modifications Do not modify the appliance or any of its safety devices. Do not weld on the appliance or burner. Unauthorized modifications may impair its function and safety. Personal injury or death can result from unauthorized modifications.

Location Safety

WARNING

Failure to comply with the following safety instructions could result in serious injury and possibly even death. Use Only on Noncombustible Surfaces Always place the appliance on a level, stable, noncombustible surface such as brick, concrete, or dirt.

Do not use on surfaces made of wood (such as a deck or table), asphalt (such as a driveway), plastic, or painted metal which may burn, blister, or melt.
Do not use this appliance under over head combustion surface. The appliance shall not be located or used under overhead unprotected combustible construction.
Do not use on a combustible surface, such as a wooden picnic table, plastic folding table, or other similar combustible surfaces.
Do not use on the surface of a passenger vehicle, such as the tailgate of a pickup truck.

Minimum Safe Clearance

Keep combustible material at least 10 ft. (3 m) from the appliance. For a fryer or boiler, the minimum clearance shall be at least 10 ft (3 m) from any structure or combustible material. Minimum clearance from side and back of unit to combustible construction: 24” (60.96mm) from sides and 24” (60.96mm) from back.

Personal Protection Equipment

Always wear safety glasses or goggles, slip-resistant, closed toe shoes, gloves or mitts. Wear long sleeves when using the appliance with cooking oil.

Burn Protection

Use well-insulated, properly fitting pot holders or oven mitts for protection from hot surfaces or splatter from cooking liquids.

Eye Protection

Safety goggles are recommended for eye protection whenever using hot cooking liquids.

Stay Clear

Clear the area of people, especially small children and pets, before using the appliance. Under no circumstances should children, pets, or unauthorized persons be allowed near the appliance.

CAUTION

Impaired User Hazard

Tripping Hazard

Tripping over the gas supply hose can cause spillage of hot oil, resulting in serious burns. Position the hose to prevent human or animal entanglement.

Slipping Hazard

Keep the floor clean and dry. Immediately clean up spilled oil. An oily or wet floor can cause slips and falls.

First Aid

Have a first aid kit available for use should the need arise and know how to use it.

Protection Against Fire

WARNING

Failure to comply with the following safety instructions could result in serious injury and possibly even death. The vast majority of fires are the result of leaving cooking oil unattended.

911 Call 911

In the event of a fire immediately call the Fire Department (911).

Fire Hazard – No Smoking

Propane gas is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and EXPLOSIVE, which could result in burns or serious injuries. Do not smoke while using the appliance.

Fire Hazard – Proper Extinguisher

Have a Type BC or ABC fire extinguisher available for use, if needed, and know how to use it. The proper type of fire extinguisher may, but not necessarily always, contain a cooking fire.

VFire Hazard – DO NOT USE WATER

In the event of an oil/grease fire, do not attempt to extinguish with water. If a fire extinguisher is not available, use dirt, sand, or baking soda.

Do not use the appliance if it is damaged in any way. If in doubt, do not use the appliance.

WARNING

Use Carolina Cooker® products (appliances) only in accordance with Federal, state, and local laws and/or ordinances. Whenever connecting, using, storing, or transporting an LP cylinder, the tank and its connections must be in compliance with the following:

LP Cylinder Specifications

When purchasing or exchanging an LP cylinder for this appliance, it must be constructed and marked in accordance with the applicable standards of the US and/or Canadian governing agencies. The cylinder must also be equipped with:

A shut-off valve terminating in a Type 1 LP cylinder valve outlet.
A Type 1 valve that prevents gas flow until a positive seal is obtained.
A collar to protect the cylinder shut-off valve.
An overfilling prevention device (OPD).
The cylinder supply system must be arranged for vapor withdrawal.

Note: For use with 20, 30, 40 lb. cylinders of LP gas only.

Transporting and Refilling an LP Cylinder

Never transport an LP cylinder inside a car or in the trunk of a car. Use an open vehicle, such as a pickup truck.
Allow only qualified LP gas dealers to properly fill or repair the LP cylinder. DO NOT OVER FILL.
Check the dates on the cylinder collar, and if the cylinder is past its re-qualification date, return it for a new LP cylinder. Do not refill an out-of-date LP cylinder.

Using an LP Cylinder

Never use the LP cylinder in a position other than upright. Do not lay an LP cylinder on its side during use.
Propane gas is heavier than air and will collect in low areas. Proper ventilation is extremely important.
When the appliance is not in use, the gas must be turned OFF by closing the LP cylinder valve and the gas pressure shutoff valve.
Before storing the appliance after use, always disconnect the LP cylinder.
Never use an LP cylinder if it shows signs of dents, gouges, bulges, fire damage, corrosion, leakage, excessive rust, or other forms of visual external damage. The cylinder may be hazardous and should be checked by a qualified LP supplier.

Storing an LP Cylinder

LP cylinders must be stored outdoors, out of reach of children, and must not be stored in a human dwelling place, garage, or any other enclosed area.
Never place a connected LP cylinder under the appliance.
Do not store an LP cylinder within 10 feet (3m) of any cooking appliance.

LP Cylinder Requirements

This appliance is specifically designed to be used with a LP cylinder with a Type 1 cylinder valve and an overfilling protection device (OPD).

A Type 1 valve can be identified by its large external threads. Do not connect to a cylinder that uses any other type of valve connection device

Note: Do Not use any other type of LP cylinder or valve with this appliance.

Assembly Instructions

Attach and tighten four legs using a fiat head screw, washer, lockwasher, and nut.
Check to make sure all gas ports in both burner heads are clear. Remove any obstructions that are present.
Install air flow control bolt and spring in each burner.
Install burner assemblies with two fiat head screws, washers, lock washers, and nuts.
Install gas valve manifold to the burners using four flat head screws.
Attach a hose assembly (customer supplied).

NOTICE
To Prevent damage to the shut-off valve when tightening the connection, hold brass hex nut with one wrench while tightening regulator hose assembly fitting with the other wrench. Do not tighten the connection using a single wrench.
WARNING
This appliance was not designed for, and should not be connected to, a natural gas supply line.

Make sure both shut-off valves are closed and connect an LP cylinder, as described in section “5.2 Connecting the LP Cylinder” on page 10.
Perform the Soapy Water Test, as described in section “5.3 Soapy Water Test” on page 11.

Operation

General Safety

Failure to follow these safety instructions and warnings could result in a fire or an explosion, which could cause property damage, personal injury, or death.

WARNING

Read and follow all instructions and warnings in this Owner’s Guide, on the cylinder, and on the supply hose safety tags before connecting the cylinder to the appliance.

Do not allow anyone to conduct activities around this appliance during or following its use until the appliance and the cooking liquid has cooled. The appliance is hot during operation and remains hot for a long period of time following its use.

Prior to Cooking

Do NOT leave the appliance unattended while the burner is lit or while heating oil, grease, water, or when cooking food.

Icon Carefully monitor the appliance, especially when the cooking oil, grease, or water is above 100° F (38° C).

This appliance gets dangerously hot while in use. Use well-insulated pot holders or oven mitts for protection from hot surfaces or splatter from cooking liquids. Safety glasses or goggles are also recommended to protect from oil splatter.

While Cooking

Never leave hot cooking liquids unattended. Carefully remove food from the appliance to prevent burns from hot cooking liquids.

Do not place an empty cooking container on a lit burner. Empty aluminum cooking containers will melt if placed over lit burner.

Do NOT move the appliance when in use.

Avoid bumping of or impact with the appliance to prevent contact with hot surfaces, spillage or splashing of hot cooking liquids.

After Cooking

Icon Heated cooking liquids and equipment will remain at temperatures capable of causing severe burns and injuries long after cooking has ended.

Do not leave the appliance unattended until the oil, grease, or water temperature falls below 100° F (38° C).

The valve on the LP cylinder must be closed when not in use.

Connecting the LP Cylinder

Safety Instructions

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Do not connect this appliance to any other fuel supply source, such as natural gas.
If the regulator is not working correctly, do not attempt to adjust or repair it.
Never use an LP cylinder if it shows signs of dents, gouges, bulges, fire damage, corrosion, leakage, excessive rust, or other forms of visual external dam age. This type of damage may be hazardous and should be checked by an LP service technician.
Route the gas supply hose away from any hot surface on the appliance stand.

Connecting Instructions

Make sure both shutoff valves are CLOSED prior to connecting the regulator and hose assembly.
Make sure the LP cylinder is upright and the valve is closed by turning the knob clockwise.
Remove the protective cap from the LP cylinder valve, if installed, and connect the hose and gas regulator assembly to the LP cylinder.

NOTICE
Be careful not to cross thread the connector onto the valve. Hand tighten only. Do not use tools to tighten this connection.

Make sure the hose is not kinked and is routed away from any sharp edges or hot surface. The LP cylinder should be placed at least 24 inches away from the appliance.
WARNING
The supply hose can be a trip hazard. Tripping over the gas supply hose can cause spillage of hot oil or food, resulting in serious burns. Place the LP cylinder away from human or pet traffic. Do not walk between the appliance and the LP cylinder.
Perform the Soapy Water Test described in the following section to check for leaks.

Soapy Water Test

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

The soapy water test must be performed outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
Do not perform the test around open flames, sparks, lit matches, lighters, or cigarettes.
Never use an open flame to test for gas leaks.

The “soapy water test” must be performed each time:

the LP cylinder is reconnected, or
any time the appliance has been moved, or
at least once per year and/or the appliance has not been used for more than 60 days.

Remove any cookware or oil vats from the appliance.
The shut-off valves and the LP cylinder valve should be in the OFF or closed position.
Prepare a soapy water solution by combining one part dish washing liquid with three parts water.
Open the LP cylinder valve.
(with the shut-off valves in the closed position).
Apply the soapy water solution to ALL connections between the LP cylinder and the hut off valves on the manifold assembly.
WARNING
Close the LP cylinder valve immediately if bubbles appear. Re-tighten the loose connection and repeat the test.
6. If leaks are identified between the LP cylinder and the unit’s shutoff valves, immediately turn OFF the LP cylinder valve.
If connections are leak-free, continue to Step 10.
All connections with evidence of leaking should be tightened, then repeat Steps 4 and 5.
If after tightening any loose connections bubbles continue to appear, close the LP cylinder valve, disconnect the LP cylinder, and do not use the appliance. Contact the local retailer where the appliance was purchased.
Continue with the Lighting Instructions or if the appliance will not be used immediately, close all gas valves and disconnect the LP cylinder.

Lighting Instructions

Note: To prevent leaving the appliance unattended, have the food prepared, safely stored, and outdoors before lighting the appliance.

Make sure the shut-off valve is in the closed position before lighting
WARNING
Do not place any part of the body above the appliance when lighting. Keep your hands, hair, and face away from the burner. Do not lean over the appliance when lighting the burner or cooking.
Open the LP cylinder valve.
Use a long match or spark igniter and slowly open the shut-off valve until the ON burner lights
Adjust the burner flame using the shut-off valve.
WARNING
If the burner does not light within five seconds, first close the shutoff valve and then close the LP cylinder valve OFF. Wait five minutes for fumes to diminish before relighting.
After the burner is lit, open the shut-off valve until the flame is at least 5 inches high.
Use the air flow control bolt on the burner to adjust the flame until it turns blue. Adjust the air flow bolt by hand to either increase or decrease the amount of airflow.
If the burner flame does not burn blue, check the burner venturi for obstructions. Dirt daubers, spiders, and other insects will build nests blocking air and gas flow.
After each use, close the shut-off valve first then close the LP cylinder valve. Always allow the appliance to cool completely before touching or moving it. Note: Due to the intense heat from the burner, it is normal for discoloration to occur on the appliance during the first few uses.
Disconnect the LP cylinder from the appliance when it is not in use.
The shut-off valves and the LP cylinder valve should both be in the OFF or closed position.
Close all gas valves and disconnect the LP cylinder.
Replace the protective LP cylinder cap when the tank is not connected.

Maintenance Guidelines

Regularly inspect the burner for cracks, abnormal holes, and other signs of significant corrosion or rust damage.
a. The burner is constructed of cast iron and steel and may rust as a result of the extreme heat and splatter from acidic foods.
b. Wire brush the outer surface of the burner to remove buildup of food particles, dirt, or other cooking residue.
c. Outward surface rust does not affect the use of the appliance.
d. Do not tamper with or attempt repairs on the burners. Replace damaged burners with new OEM parts.
e. Unauthorized modifications will void the warranty.
If the burner is hard to light or does not appear to be working correctly, check for an internal obstruction or replace the burner assembly.
WARNING
Obstruction of combustion and ventilation airflow can prevent proper gas mixture inside the burner, resulting in a burner tube fire.
. Inspect the inside of the burner tube for blockage caused by insects or other small animals and/or outdoor debris such as leaves, grass, etc. To remove any blockage:
a. Close the LP cylinder gas valve and shutoff valve.
b. Use a narrow bottle brush or a stiff wire to re move any blockage.
Check each flame port opening in the diffuser to make sure there is no blockage from food or other debris.

CAUTION
To prevent potential eye injury, wear safety glasses when cleaning the burner.

b. Replace damaged parts with new OEM parts.
c. Unauthorized modifications will void the warranty.
Regularly inspect the LP cylinder tank and valve assembly.
a. Do not tamper with or attempt repairs on the tank or valve assembly.
b. Replace or exchange damaged tanks.
c. Allow only qualified propane gas service technicians to make repairs.
The exterior of your appliance may be repainted using a high-temperature resistant paint. Perform all touch-up maintenance to a cool, drybase, at ambient weather temperature.ent weather temperature.
a. If any rusting occurs to the base or legs of the appliance, use steel wool to clean or buff the affected area.
b. Spray paint on the affected areas of the base after it has cooled.
c. Perform all touch-up maintenance to a cool, dry base, at ambient weather temperature.

WARNING

Do not use aerosol spray paint or other similar aerosols which contain flammable petroleum distillates under pressure around open flames. Flame from the burner or a hot surface could cause spray or the spray can to rupture violently, resulting in serious burns, bodily harm, or even death.

Storage

Store the appliance in a dry place.
Do not store the appliance outside where it would be exposed to the weather.
Indoor storage of the appliance is permissible only if the LP cylinder is disconnected and removed from this appliance. Refer to section “3.7 LP (Propane) Gas and LP Cylinder Safety” on page 7.
Store the appliance away from the reach of children. For long-term storage, cover the burners and close the air shutter to prevent potential blockage.
Check and tighten any loose hardware or connections at the beginning of each new season.
Keep the appliance area clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors and liquids.

Transporting

Transporting the appliance should be done in an open bed
truck or trailer.

Remove the LP cylinder from the appliance prior to transporting.
Make sure the appliance and any cooking liquid is cool to the touch before transporting.
Do not transport the LP cylinder inside a vehicle containing passengers unless it has a separate cargo space.
a.Make sure the tank is leak-free before placing inside a vehicle or trailer.
b. Transport the tank in an upright position, never on its side.
c. Place the tank on a flat surface.
d. Place the tank in a rack or restrain it from movement when transporting to prevent tipping or other damage.

Warranty

Carolina Cooker® warrants, to the original purchaser, the appliance to be free of defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year from date of purchase.

Note: Paint finish may burn off under normal use and, therefore, it carries no warranty
