LED Light Box Instructions/Information Sheet

Using the LED Light Box

A variety of kits of materials have been developed for use with the LED Light Box. Overlays and other materials to use with LED Light Box are available on aph.org. Each level is accompanied by a guidebook of activities grouped by skill. These kits feature a wide range of materials designed and tested to stimulate and train the remaining vision function of students from birth to six years of age.

  1. intensity control knob
  2. adjustable stand

These materials and some of their use cases include:

  • Multi-colored transparent acrylic shapes, pegs and cubes may be used for: creating visual displays, eye-hand coordination, matching, identification, instruction in spatial relationships, sequencing, and part-whole relationships.
  • Colored transparent pictures may be matched, named, and sequenced.
  • Puzzles provide additional practice in shape and part-whole discrimination.

Smaller kits are also available for some application specific training.

The LED Light Box and Materials were not designed to provide a comprehensive program of vision training activities. Light Box Materials can play a useful role in vision training, but they should be used in conjunction with other materials. The high contrast background provided by the LED Light Box’s illuminated surface makes a variety of visual tasks easier to perform. In addition, the brightly colored items used on the LED Light Box are attractive, and the novelty of the materials motivates students to utilize their vision. Teachers are encouraged to continue to use the ideas and concepts from these kits to create their own curriculum. Please share your success stories, especially for custom made materials! Safety
  1. No child should use the LED Light Box except when directly supervised by a teacher or other adult familiar with these safety instructions.
  2. Check the LED Light Box before each use for any damage to the unit, such as exposed electrical components, frayed cord, or any other potential hazard.
  3. Operate only using an AC adapter from APH (part number 45-052-053).
  4. Do not operate without an LED tube in the sockets.
  5. Check to see that the translucent work surface is securely in place whenever the LED Light Box is in use. Do not remove the work surface unless the unit is disconnected.
  6. Do not allow children to play with the electrical cord, the AC adapter or it’s plug, or the adjustable stand.
  7. Do not permit children to drop, hit, stand, or sit on the LED Light Box or engage in any other activity which might damage the unit or expose electrical components.
  8. Keep the LED Light Box away from liquid or moisture. When using acetate sheets and marking pens, move the sheet away from the LED Light Box to clean it.
  9. If it is necessary to clean the LED Light Box, disconnect it and wipe with a damp, not wet, cloth.
  10. Due to the intensity of the light, the LED Light Box may become moderately warm during normal operation. However, if it becomes hot to the touch, turn off the LED Light Box and contact APH Customer Service at [email protected] or 800-223-1839 for further instructions.
Care

When not in use, the LED Light Box and AC adapter should be unplugged and stored safely out of the reach of children. This also prevents the unit from becoming damaged.

When it becomes necessary to clean the LED Light Box, unplug the LED Light Box adapter, then use a soft cloth dampened (not wet) with a gentle cleaner. Be careful not to allow any cleaner to get around the translucent worksurface and into the interior of the LED Light Box.

Maintenance

The LED Light Box uses a U-shaped LED tube to provide the light. This light tube may burn out, and is user replaceable. Replacement tubes can be purchased from various sources such as electrical supply companies or home improvement companies. The light tube must be a T8 LED tube that uses 13 Watts. Tubes that are rated for a different wattage will not work! Light tubes are designed for different light temperatures. The light temperature does not indicate how hot the tube will get, but rather the color and softness of the light. APH Recommends a light temperature of 4100K, but lights with temperature of 3500K – 4200K will also work well.

To replace the bulb, unplug the LED Light Box before removing the translucent work surface. Remove the work surface by pushing your finger or a flat screwdriver under the surface at the small, molded depression on the left edge of the Box. Slide it off the Box. Cut the four plastic ties that hold the bulb in place. Pull up on the bulb; the pins connecting the tube to the sockets should release easily. Remove the old bulb and position the new bulb with the pins over the two slots in the sockets. Press the pins down into the slots as the rest of the bulb is lowered in place. It is important to secure the new bulb with four new plastic ties, usually available wherever you purchase the new tube. After the new light tube has been installed, replace the work surface by sliding it back into place.

  1. remove work surface using a flat screwdriver
  2. plastic ties
