Explanation of symbols

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! RETAIN FOR FUTURE USE!
Read the instruction manual carefully before using this device, especially the safety instructions, and keep the instruction manual for future use. Should you give this device to another person, it is vital that you also pass on these instructions for use.

Intended use
The device is intended for relieving itching and swelling caused by insect bites or stings by applying heat (local hyperthermia).

Contraindications – Do not use the device:

  • if you suffer from diabetes. Sensitivity to pain could, in certain circumstances, be reduced and diabetics may burn themselves.
  • on people with disabilities, children under 3 years old or people with reduced sensitivity to heat. This includes people with skin alterations due to illness or scarred tissue in the application area, after taking pain relief medication, drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
  • on acutely or chronically diseased (injured or irritated) skin (e.g. inflamed skin, whether painful or not, reddened skin, rashes, (e.g. allergies), burns, frostbite, bruises, swellings (without signs of an insect bite/sting), both open and healing wounds, and surgical scars where the healing process could be affected).
  • if you are suffering from a fever.
  • on sensitive areas of skin.
  • if you have any sensory impairment that reduces the feeling of pain (e.g. metabolic disorders).
  • if you are using lotions, creams and gels locally at the same time.
  • if you suffer from persistently irritated skin due to long-term heat application on the same area of skin.

General warnings

  • Any person using it on themselves must be over 12 years old. The product should only be used on children under 12 years old if supervised or assisted by an adult.
  • Before using the device, consult your doctor if you have any skin conditions, serious illness (in particular if you have a propensity to thromboembolic conditions or recurrent malignant growths) or unexplained chronic pain in any part of the body.
  • Seek medical advice immediately if the symptoms persist or worsen whilst or after using the insect bite relief and stop using it.
  • Seek medical advice immediately if it is a tick bite. The bite may result in transmission of pathogens such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) or borreliosis.
  • Seek medical advice immediately if the first signs of increased itching, skin redness, swelling, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, formation of wheals or a drop or increase in blood pressure occur.
  • Do not use near to the eyes, on the eyelids, mouth or on mucous membranes.
  • Store the device out of the reach of children and pets. Do not allow children to play with the device.
  • Keep packaging material away from children (risk of suffocation).
  • Please note the general hygiene measures when using the insect bite relief.
  • The device is not a substitute for medical consultation and treatment. Always consult your doctor if you are experiencing any pain or are suffering from an illness.
  • If the device does not work properly, or if you feel unwell or experience pain, stop using it immediately.

General precautions

  •  Do not touch the device with wet hands. Do not allow water to spray onto the device. Only operate the device if it is completely dry.
  • Do not use any detergents or solvents to clean and maintain the device. If liquid penetrates the device this could cause damage to the electronics or other device parts and lead to a malfunction.
  • The device should only be used by one person; use by multiple people is not recommended.
  • Protect the device against direct sunlight and store in a dry place.
  • Protect the device from impacts, moisture, dust, chemicals, marked temperature fluctuations and nearby sources of heat (ovens, heaters).
  • Ensure that no water enters the device. If this should happen, remove the batteries and only use the device again when it is completely dry.
  • If you store the device, no heavy objects should be placed on top of it.
  • Before use, ensure that there is no visible damage to the device and accessories. In case of any doubt, do not use the device, and contact your retailer or the customer service,
  • Store the device in a location protected against climatic influences. The device must be stored in the environmental conditions specified.
  • When ambient temperature is less than -10°C or higher than +50°C, the time from minimum storage temperature to use is at least 4 hours; the time from maximum storage temperature is at least 4 hours.

Battery safety instruction

  • If your skin or eyes come into contact with the battery fluid, rinse the affected areas with water and seek medical attention.
  • Choking hazard! Children can swallow batteries and choke on them. Therefore, keep batteries out of the reach of children.
  • Explosion hazard! Do not throw batteries into a fire.
  • If a battery has leaked, put on protective gloves and clean the battery compartment with a dry cloth.
  • Do not disassemble, open or crush batteries.
  • Pay attention to the plus (+) and minus (-) polarity – insert batteries correctly.
  • Protect batteries from excessive heat.
  • Do not charge or short-circuit the batteries.
  • If the instrument is not used for a long time, remove the batteries from the battery compartment.
  • Only use identical or equivalent battery types and always replace all batteries at the same time.
  • Do not use rechargeable batteries!

Note on electromagnetic compatibility

  • The device is suitable for use in all environments listed in these instructions for use, including domestic environments. It complies with the requirements of standard 60601-1-2 for electromagnetic compatibility (see EMC supplement).
  • Use of the device may be restricted in the presence of electromagnetic interference. This could lead to problems such as error messages or failure of the device.
  • Avoid using this device directly next to other devices or stacking it on top of other devices, as this may result in incorrect operation. If it is still necessary to use the unit in the above manner, both this unit and the other units must be monitored to ensure that they are operating properly. Failure to do so may affect the performance of the unit.

Items supplied and packaging

Please check first of all that the device is complete and is not damaged in any way. If in doubt, do not use it and contact the service Centre. The following parts are included:

  • 1 medisana Insect Bite Healer IB 100
  • 1 Lanyard
  • 2 batteries (type AAA / LR03) 1.5V
  • 1 Instructions for use & EMC supplement

Packaging is reusable or can be returned to the raw material cycle. Please dispose of any packaging material that is no longer required properly. If you notice any transport damage when unpacking, please contact your dealer immediately.

Insert / Remove batteries
Insertion: Before you can use your device, you must insert the enclosed batteries. To do this, open the battery compartment lid 5 and insert the two 1.5V, AAA batteries. Pay attention to the polarity (as marked in the battery compartment). Close the battery compartment again

Removal : Replace the batteries when the device status LED 1 flashes 3x and an acoustic signal sounds 3x.

Usage

The best results are obtained if you apply the product immediately after the insect sting or bite. If you wait too long to apply to the stung or bitten area and the itching and swelling have already started, the application may have limited effect. Before application, make sure that no insect stinger has remained at the sting site. If necessary, carefully remove the sting before application.

  1. Slide the ON/OFF switch 3 towards the symbol “I” for ON. The device status LED 1 lights up green and indicates to you that the device is ready to use.

  2. For a 3-second application, place the heating plate 4 of the device on the area that has been stung or bitten. Press the activation button 2 once. The device status LED 1 lights up blue and indicates, that the application is starting. This short application time is recommended for first use or use on sensitive skin. For a 6-second application, place the heating plate 4 of the device on the area that has been stung or bitten and press the activation button 2 twice in quick succession. The device status LED lights up yellow and indicates, that the application is starting. This application time is recommended for regular use on normal skin.

  3. After the end of the application, an buzzer sounds, heating of the heating plate 4 stops automatically and the device status LED 1 lights up green again. Remove the heating plate 4 from the area of skin once the signal sounds.
    Attention! Depending on the sensitivity of the person applying the heat and the skin area, the temperature may be perceived as unpleasant and cause slight reddening of the skin, in rare cases also skin irritation. If the heat feels too hot, stop the application immediately!

  4. If required, you can use the heat function of the insect bite relief on the sting/bite again after a break of 2 minutes or also use it immediately on another sting/bite in a different area. The maximum number of 5 applications per hour on the same treatment area must not be exceeded.

  5. If the device is no longer required, set it to “OFF” again using the ON/OFF Switch 3. The green device status LED 1 turns off.

  6. Before storing, make sure that the device is switched off and the heating plate 4 has cooled down.

Cleaning and care

  • The device is intended for multiple use.
  • It is recommended to clean the device before the first and each subsequent use.
  • Before each cleaning, the device must be switched off, cooled down and the batteries removed.
  • Use only soft, dry cloths for cleaning.
  • Never use substances for cleaning that could come into contact with the skin or mucous membranes, be swallowed, inhaled or potentially toxic. Do not use harsh cleaning agents and never hold the device under water. Do not clean the device mechanically (e.g. with brushes or similar), as this may cause irreparable damage.
  • Do not clean the unit and accessories in the dishwasher!
  • When using the unit on several puncture or bite sites, it is recommended to clean the heating plate 4 each time. This reduces the possibility of germs and bacteria being transferred from one skin site to the next. Use a commercially available alcohol-based disinfectant wipe to disinfect the heating plate 4.

What if there are problems?

If the problem cannot be solved or if other errors (not mentioned here) occur, please contact customer service.

Disposal

This product must not be disposed of together with domestic waste. All users are obliged to hand in all electrical or electronic devices, regardless of whether or not they contain toxic substances, at a municipal or commercial collection point so that they can be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner. Please remove the batteries before disposing of the device. Do not dispose of old batteries with your household waste, but at a battery collection station at a recycling site or in a shop. Consult your municipal authority or your dealer for information about disposal.

Warranty and repair terms
Your statutory warranty rights are not limited by our warranty set out below. Please contact your dealer or the service centre in case of a claim under the warranty. If you have to return the unit, please enclose a copy of your receipt and state what the defect is.

The following warranty terms apply:

  1. The warranty period for medisana products is three years from date of purchase. In case of a warranty claim, the date of purchase has to be proven by means of the sales receipt or invoice.

  2. Defects in material or workmanship will be removed free of charge within the warranty period.

  3. Repairs under warranty do not extend the warranty period either for the unit or for the replacement parts.

  4. The following is excluded under the warranty:
    a. All damage which has arisen due to improper treatment, e.g. non-observance of the user instructions.
    b. All damage which is due to repairs or tampering by the customer or unauthorized third parties.
    c. Damage which has arisen during transport from the manufacturer to the consumer or during transport to the service centre.
    d. Accessories which are subject to normal wear and tear.

  5. Liability for direct or indirect consequential losses caused by the unit are excluded even if the damage to the unit is accepted as a warranty claim.
