Application
Brüel & Kjær Vibro vibration velocity sensors operate in accordance with
the electrodynamic principle and are used for measuring the bearing absolute
vibration of machines.
Installation and Commissioning
Installation and commissioning primarily concern work on electrical equipment.
These works may be performed exclusively by electricians or workers instructed
and supervised by an electrician in accordance with electrotechnical
regulations/directives.
Change of System Specification
Any change of system specification has its effects on monitoring process with
stationary systems and on the measuring sequence with portable measuring
systems.
Exclusively use sensor as specified in data sheet. Any use other than
specified is considered inappropriate.
Mounted sensors must not be used as steps.
Sensors and the cables are used in a way not described in the relevant user
manuals, function and protection may be impaired and serious personal damage,
death or serious, irreversible injuries may result.
- Handle the systems with care in order to prevent damage to the systems or personal damage due to falling.
- Use system exclusively as originally intended. Any use other than originally intended is prohibited. Brüel & Kjær Vibro does not assume any liability for damages resulting from inappropriate use. The user is solely responsible. For originally intended use, see system documentation.
- Ensure that system is exposed only to admissible environmental influences specified in technical system data sheet.
- Maintain electrical equipment in regular intervals.Remedy defects, e.g. loose wires, defective connectors, immediately
- Check cable and connectors in regular intervals.
- Never use cable to pull plug out of socket.
Hot surfaces
In line with the user manuals, sensors and cables can be operated in extensive
ambient temperature ranges, whereby they can become hot through self-heating
on housing walls and can produce burning.
When mounted at external heat or cold sources (e.g. machine parts), systems,
sensors and cables can adopt dangerous temperatures, whereby burning, among
other things, can occur in the event of contact.
Recommendations to User
If the use of the system in conjunction with machines or plant sections can
produce risks outside of Brüel & KjærVibro’s responsibility, the user is
expected to prepare and distribute safety technical instructions or warnings
and to ensure that the personnel concerned has received and understood same.
Note
If system is integrated into a machine or designed to be assembled,
commissioning must not take place until the machine thesystem is to be
integrated in conforms to the EC directives.
Connection Diagram
With the illustrated direction of movement of the bearing shell, a positive polarity signal is produced at the white wire of the cable. 1)
- Exception for VS-079 for mobile applications (with connection cable 6-pole DIN/BNC). In this case a negative signal will be produced at the white wire of the cable.

Assembly
Fastening of sensor
The following applies on principle:
Note:
Observe the assembly drawing above during assembly. Choose a position on the
mounting surface directly at the bearing housing taking into account the
measuring direction of the sensor.
- The mounting surface has a minimum diameter of 35 mm and ismachined flat (surface roughness Ra 0.8 µm)
- The M10 threaded hole is 25 mm deep and is located in the centre and perpendicular to the mounting surface. It is bevelled and deburred.
- The mounting surface is clean and dust free.
-
Screw the threaded pin 15 mm deep into the mounting surface as pictured and secure it against loosening using a screw locking device (e.g. LOCTITE243 medium strength, LOCTITE 270 high strength).
-
Attach the sensor to the threaded pin taking into account the recommended tightening torque of 14 Nm (M10xM10) or 7.1 Nm (M10 x M8). Secure the sensor against loosening with a screw locking device (e.g. LOCTITE 243 medium strength).
-
The penetration depth of the sensor should be a maximumof 10 mm.
Connecting Cable
Note:
For protection against mechanical damage and for increasing the EMCsafety the extension cable must be laid in steel protective conduits or pipes (bending radius rmin = 60 mm). -
When installing the extension cable / protective conduit, make sure that they are laid in such a way that there is no tension in the sensor system during operation. This avoidscorrupting the measuring results.
Preparing the steel protective conduit
Adapt the steel protective conduit to the site conditions by taking the
following steps:
- If the protective conduit has a braided shield, to ensure a clean cut through the braided wrap a strip of metallised adhesive tape around the area where the cut is tobe made before starting the cut.
- Cut the protective conduit with a suitable cutting tool, e.g. metal saw, cutting disc.
- De-burr the cut end.
Mounting steel protective hose at VS-068/069/077
- To achleve the optimum shielding performance of AC-2201 the protective conduit with connector should be assembled as follows:
- Cut protective conduit to appropriate length.
- Disassemble connector and slide pressure screw (long version) overthe conduit.
- Slide sealing ring over the conduit with tapered edge facing the pressure screw.
- Uncover the outer jacket of the conduit with care leaving a section as long as 1.5 x the width of the brass-thrust collar.
- Cut copper shield with scissors flush with the conduit.
- Slide brass-thrust collar (with taper side as shown) over the conduit asillustrated above.
- Screw brass ferrule into the conduit until it stops.
- Assemble the rest of the individualcomponents and tighten so that theO-ring is not movable.
- For liquid-tight installations install the additional O-ring at the connector thread side.
Fixing steel protective conduit at VS-079
A Steel protective hose
B Sealing ring (brass)
C Connecting piece
D Union nut
E Inner bushing
- Cut protective conduit to appropriate length (see 3.2)
- Slide the union nut and sealing ring on steel protective hose behind the cutting point
- Screw the inner tube onto the steelprotective conduit
- Slide steel protective hose slide over sensor cable and fix protective hose joint to the sensor and the steel protective hose
- Adjust sensor cable length to suit and ansulate
- Solder screen onto sensor cable; protect soldering joint by means of shrink tubing and rubber bushing
- Fix end sleeves to cable ends
