JEFFERSONIAN KINETIC WIND VANE
#WV1LFB

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

To fully enjoy this beautifully crafted Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind Vane, please read the following information.
The Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind Vane was inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s affinity for invention and based on the design of a 19th-century centrifugal regulator. The beautiful aluminum cups will gently sweep around the main shaft and as the wind increases, the hinged joints will allow the aluminum arms to rise and indicate the relative wind speed depicted in timeless illustrations on the solid brass arrow below. Additionally, the brass arrow will gently turn to face the direction of the wind.
The instrument is made of solid brass and aluminum construction with glass accents. Within a few month’s exposure to the elements, the brass finish will begin to age gracefully and develop a mellow patina. This aging process is what we call “Living  Finish Brass.”
Ideal Instrument Placemen t : For best indications of wind speed and direction, place your Kinetic Wind Vane in an open area that is unobstructed by buildings and trees.

For Ground Mounting:

  1. Clear a smooth, flat surface on the ground.  Then place the base on the ground with the Conant logo facing up. conant Jeffersonian Kinetic base
  2. Insert the foundation rod into the hole at the top of the base. Then screw the level into the top of the rod to verify that it is plumb. Shift the rod’s tilt until the bubble is in the center of the level’s ring. When you are done, unscrew and remove the level while keeping one hand on the foundation rod to keep it level. conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind Vanefoundation
  3. Screw the hexagonal nut into the top of the foundation rod (#3a) while being careful to maintain the same angle of tilt.  Using a rubber mallet, drive the foundation rod into the ground until the top of the rod is about 1/8” from the top of the base (#3b). conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind VaneScrew the hexagona
  4. Tighten the two set screws on the base using the Allen wrench. Then unscrew and remove the hexagonal nut from the top of the foundation rod.conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind VaneTighten the two*Note: Images are not to scale or actual size.

  7. Screw the telescoped poles onto the foundation rod, keeping the outer pole at the bottom. Tighten by sliding the Allen wrench through the hole at the top of the inner pole and twisting until the poles are secure.conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind Screw the telescoped
  8. Screw the directional arrow set onto the telescoping poles. To tighten, slide one of the Allen wrenches through the hole on the inner telescoping pole and the other Allen wrench through the hole on the shaft of the directional arrow. Then twist until both sets are secure. conant Jeffersonian Kinetic directional

For Deck Mounting:

  • FOR BEST RESULTS: Choose a spot on your deck that is as far from the house as possible.

    1. Place the base on the deck where it is to be installed and use a pencil to mark the location of the three mounting holes on the deck. Then use a drill with a 1/8” (4mm) drill bit to drill three pilot holes into the mounting surface according to the following dimensions. conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Wind For Deck
    2. Place the base on the deck and align the three base holes with the three newly drilled holes. Use a Phillips screwdriver to screw each of the three screws into the deck. Be careful not to tighten the screws completely.conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Place the base 1
    3. Insert the foundation rod into the top of the base. Then screw the level onto the top of the rod to verify that it is plumb. If the unit is not level, use flat pieces of wood (shims) to slide under the base. When you are done, unscrew and remove the level.conant Jeffersonian Kinetic Allen 3. Insert the foundation 3
    4. Use the Allen wrench to tighten the two set screws on the base. Then finish tightening the wood screws so they are completely secure in the mounting surface.
    5.  Follow steps six through nine for Ground Mounting to finish assembling the Kinetic Wind Vane.
*NOTE: Plastic expansion plugs have been included if you wish to mount the Kinetic Wind Vane to a concrete surface.
