7. Adding Water
- Fill the fish tank with water to within two inches from the top of the tank. Treat tap water with a water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramines that can be harmful to your fish. Allow water temperature in fish tank to reach room temperature before adding fish.
8. Introducing Fish
- Float the bag with your fish on the surface of the aquarium for 15 minutes.
- Open the bag containing your new fish, taking care that the bag does not collapse, and add a little aquarium water every two minutes directly to bag.
- Continue this process for 10 minutes, allowing the bag to fill with water.
- Take bag with fish to sink and gently scoop fish out with a net or pour bag of water into net. Gently place fish into aquarium. Do not add water from fish bag to aquarium in order to prevent introduction of possible disease or parasites from store water.
9. Cleaning Fish Tank
- Fill a clean container (one that has never been used with soaps or detergents) with water from the tap. Allow this container to sit overnight to enable it to reach room temperature. Add a water conditioner product that instantly makes tap water safe, removing chemicals that can be harmful to your fish.
- Before cleaning the fish bowl, you will need to temporarily move your fish to another container. Fill this container with existing water taken from the fish bowl, using this water will minimize shock to the fish.
- Remove all the decorations and place them on paper towels to catch dripping water. Place a colander or strainer in the sink and pour the water and gravel into it, rinsing gravel with lukewarm water.
10. Reassembling Fish Tank
- Place the fish tank under running warm water, use your hand or clean micro-fiber cloth to gently wipe the inside surfaces of the tank Do not use soap or other detergents. Do not place tank in dishwasher or hot water since damage to the tank can occur. Rinse the bowl thoroughly and proceed to cleaning the ornaments and decorations in the same manner.
- Once everything is clean, reassemble your fish tank, adding back gravel and decorations. Refill fish bowl with the water that has acclimated to room temperature, using a tap water conditioner.
- Float your fish in a bag as you initially did when adding him, floating for 15 minutes. Place your fish back into the clean fish tank.
