The ideal network involves your Internet Service Provider (ISP) connecting onsite to a stand-alone modem that connects to a router, preferably a router recommended to you from Nextiva. If you have more devices on your network than ports on your router, you can connect a switch to your router to expand the number of ports.
There are three main areas that you should be concerned with regarding your Arris/Motorola Netopia 2000 Series. They are:
SIP ALG: Nextiva uses port 5062 to bypass SIP ALG, however, the Arris/Motorola Netopia 2000 Series allows SIP ALG to be disabled, which is always recommended.
DNS Server Configuration: If the DNS server being used is not up to date and consistent, devices can become deregistered. DNS Proxy is enabled by default causing intermittent deregistrations, particularly with Poly devices. Nextiva always recommends using the Google DNS servers of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Firewall Access Rules: The simplest way to ensure that traffic is not being blocked is to allow all traffic to and from 208.73.144.0/21 and 208.89.108.0/22. This range covers the IP addresses from 208.73.144.0 – 208.73.151.255, and 208.89.108.0 – 208.89.111.255. The Arris/Motorola Netopia 2000 Series’ default firewall setting is called ClearSailing, which will work with Nextiva’s system.
To Disable SIP ALG, Configure Firewall Rules, and set the DNS Server
Configuration:
- Telnet to the Arris/Motorola Netopia 2000 series from a computer that is behind the Netopia gateway using the Operating System’s native telnet client, or download and run the program PuTTY. The default IP is 192.168.1.254.
- The default username is admin and the Device Access Code printed on the Netopia will be used as the password.
- Enter the following commands, one at a time, and press the Enter key at the end of each line:
- config
- set ip sip-passthrough off
- set dns primary-address 8.8.8.8
- set dns secondary-address 8.8.4.4
- set dns proxy-enable off
- set security firewall option low
- set diffserv option on
- save
- exit
- exit
- Once complete, log into the router by typing in the IP of the router into the address bar of your web browser. The default IP is 192.168.1.254.
- Under the Speed section, the downstream and upstream will be displayed in kbps. This may help Nextiva assist with call quality issues, and is good information to have.
- After collecting the information, notify any affected parties that the router will need to be restarted and that the network will be down for a short period. Once confirmed, click Restart Router.
