Aeotec Smart Switch Gen5 or Switch Gen5.

Aeotec Smart Switch Gen5 has been crafted to power connected lighting using Z-Wave Plus. It is powered by Aeotec’s Gen5 technology.

To see whether Smart Switch Gen5 is known to be compatible with your Z-Wave system or not, please reference our Z-Wave gateway comparison listing. The technical specifications of Smart Switch Gen5 can be viewed at that link.

Familiarize yourself with your Smart Switch Gen5.

There are 2 plug-in switches that this guide helps you with: Switch and Smart Switch. On the outside, they both look the same – and you can distinguish which yours is via the packaging or the label on the back of your switch. While external differences are minor, inside the technologies we’ve used have one crucial difference: Smart Switch will report the amount of electricity the devices plugged in to it are using, while Switch will not.

Quick start.

Getting your Smart Switch or Switch up and running is as simple as plugging it into a wall outlet and linking it to your existing Z-Wave network. The following instructions tell you how to link your switch to your Z-Wave network using Aeotec Z-Stick or Minimote controllers. If you are using other products as your main Z-Wave controller, please refer to the part of their respective manuals that tell you how to add new devices into your network, and then reference the button press required to pair the Smart Switch Gen5.

Pairing your Smart Switch Gen5 into your existing Z-Wave network.

1. Place your gateway or controller into Z-Wave pair or inclusion mode. (Please refer to your controller/gateway manual on how to do this)

2. Press the Action Button on your Switch.

3. If your switch has been successfully linked to your network, its LED will no longer blink. If linking was unsuccessful, the LED will continue to blink.

Advanced functions.

Unpairing your Smart Switch Gen5 from your existing Z-Wave network

Your Smart Switch can be removed from your Z-Wave network at any time. It is always advised that you use your gateway to perform an unpair in order to avoid leaving phantom / failed nodes that become difficult to remove. To do so, follow the steps below:

1. Place your gateway or controller into Z-Wave unpair or exclusion mode. (Please refer to your controller/gateway manual on how to do this)

2. Press the Action Button on your Switch.

3. If your switch has been successfully unlinked to your network, its LED will begin to blink. If linking was unsuccessful, the LED will return to its last LED state.

Monitoring your energy usage:

If your switch is a Smart Switch, it’ll report the energy used of whatever is plugged into it back to a compatible Z-Wave gateway or controller that allows for voltage (V), current (A), watt (W), or kilowatt-hour (kWh) readings.

If your main controller supports it, the energy consumption will be displayed within its corresponding interface. Please refer to the manual of your main controller for specific information and instructions on monitoring, accessing and interpreting the data collected by your Smart Switch Gen5.

Reset your Smart Switch.

If at some stage, your primary controller is missing  or inoperable, you may wish to reset all of your Smart Switch Gen5’s settings to their factory defaults.  To do this:

  • Press and hold the Action Button for 20 seconds
  • The LED on the Smart Switch Gen5 will blink faster and faster
  • When 20 seconds elapses, the LED will become solid for 2 seconds. You may let go of the Smart Switch Gen5 button.
  • The LED will continue to blink slowly to indicate that it is ready to pair to a new network.

More Advanced Configurations

The Smart Switch Gen5 has a longer list of device configurations that you can do with Smart Switch Gen5. These are not exposed well in most gateways, but at the least you can manually set configurations through most Z-Wave gateways available. These configuration options may not be available in a few gateways.

You can find the configuration sheet here: ES – Smart Switch Gen5 [PDF]

If you have any questions on how to set these, please contact support and let them know what gateway you are using.
