The manufacturer of your MINI is the Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft, BMW AG. This Supplementary Owner’s Handbook describes all series-specific equipment, countryspecific equipment, and optional equipment that is offered for this model. For this reason, this Supplementary Owner’s Handbook also describes and illustrates some equipment that may not be available in your vehicle, for example due to the special options or national- market version selected. This also applies to safety related functions and systems.
If equipment and models are not described in this Supplementary Owner’s Handbook, please consult the accompanying Owner’s Manual.

Status of this Owner’s Manual at time of printing

The high level of safety and quality of the MINI vehicles is ensured through continuous development. In rare cases, therefore, the features described in this Supplementary Owner’s Manual may differ from those in your vehicle.

Notes

The MINI John Cooper Works GP is a two-seat compact vehicle. It combines lightweight construction, e.g. chassis/suspension components made of aluminum, with driving dynamics. The development of the vehicle was focused on agile driving characteristics and high driving stability.

The add-on parts significantly limit ground clearance. When driving, make sure that there is sufficient ground clearance, such as when entering underground parking garages, driving over curbs or when driving in winter; otherwise damage to the add-on parts may result.

Sitting safely

Contrary to the description in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI, your MINI John Cooper Works GP has two seats.

Safety belts

Your MINI John Cooper Works GP is equipped with safety belts for the driver and passenger. Also follow the instructions for using safety belts in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI.

Transporting children safely

Since there is no rear seat, please note the following specifics about transporting children safely.

Also follow the general instructions for transporting children safely in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI.

The right place for children

Note

Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle; otherwise, they could endanger themselves and/or other persons by opening the doors, for example.

Children in the front passenger seat

Should it be necessary to use a child restraint system on the front passenger seat, make sure that the front and side airbags for the front passenger side are deactivated. For more information on automatic deactivation of the front passenger airbags, refer to the Owner’s Manual for the MINI/MINI Clubman. If a child restraint system is used on the front passenger seat, the front passenger airbags must be deactivated; otherwise, a child traveling in that seat faces an increased risk of injury if the airbags are triggered, even with a child restraint system.

Children 13 years of age or older must be buckled in with a safety belt as soon as there no longer is any child restraint system that is appropriate for their age, size and weight.

Child seat security

Child seat security

The safety belt for the passenger can be prevented from being pulled out in order to secure child restraint systems.

Child restraint system with tether strap

Child restraint systems with upper retaining strap are attached to the anchor.

Placement of the tether strap

Placement of the tether strap

Make sure the upper retaining strap does not run over sharp edges and is not twisted as it passes to the top anchor. Otherwise, the strap will not properly secure the child restraint system in the event of an accident.

  1. Guide the tether strap through the holder on the head restraint.
  2. Attach the tether strap to the anchor using the hook.
  3. Pull the tether strap tight.
For further information about installing child restraint systems and deactivation of the front passenger airbags, refer to the Owner’s Manual for the MINI.

Technology for driving comfort and safety

GP Mode

GP Mode

GP Mode is a race track-optimized mode of the Dynamic Stability Control DSC that permits greater longitudinal and lateral acceleration when driving on dry road surfaces, but with reduced driving stability. Only in the absolute limit range does the system take stabilizing action with brake interventions in the wheels. It is activated and deactivated in analogous fashion to the Dynamic Traction Control DTC, refer to the Owner’s Manual for the vehicle.

Coil-over suspension

Your MINI John Cooper Works GP has a coil-over suspension with a range of adjustment for vehicle height.

The racing-oriented suspension design results in reduced suitability for everyday use such as sensitivity to lane grooves and increased acceleration inputs.

Street use setting

Do not change the coil position set for your MINI by the manufacturer; otherwise, the vehicle height is not suitable for operation on public roads.< The coil-over suspension has been optimally set for your MINI by the manufacturer. This setting corresponds to the approval requirements of your country. Always use these settings for operation on public roads, refer to illustration.

  1. Front spring strut
  2. Rear spring strut
  3. Setting gauge

Race track setting

Have suspension adjustments performed by your MINI dealer or by appropriately trained personnel.

After changing the suspension settings, a wheel alignment is recommended. Use the provided tool, refer to page 10, for adjustment procedures.

Lamps

Parking lamps

The MINI John Cooper Works GP does not have parking lamps in the front fog lamps. Instead, a substitute function is integrated into the turn signal lamps in the main headlamps. The vehicle cannot be illuminated on one side for parking.

Things to remember when driving

Brake system

Your MINI John Cooper Works GP has a brake system that has been adapted to the increased driving dynamics of the vehicle.

Because it is designed for high braking performance, stability, and controllability, the brake may generate noise during braking. However, this does not affect the brake’s performance, safe operation or stability under load.

Cargo loading

Also follow the instructions for loading in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI; otherwise, the operating safety of the vehicle is no longer assured and the vehicle will not be in compliance with the construction and use regulations.

Storage compartments

Two additional storage compartments are located under the front luggage area floor panel.

Releasing

Turn the knob in the horizontal position, refer to arrow.

Locking

Locking
Lift the luggage area floor panel, arrow 1, and slide it forward, arrow 2.
Turn the knob in the vertical position.
Folding up the luggage compartment floor

Stowing cargo

  • Position heavy cargo as low and as far forward as possible, ideally directly behind the cargo rod 1.
  • Do not stack higher than the cargo rod. Cover sharp edges and corners.

Securing cargo

  • Secure smaller and lighter items using retaining or draw straps.
  • Heavy-duty cargo straps for securing larger and heavier objects are available at your MINI dealer. Lashing eyes are provided for attaching the cargo straps. Comply with the information enclosed with the load-securing devices.

Wiper system

Window washer nozzles

Contrary to the description in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI, your MINI John Cooper Works GP does not have heated washer jets. Please note that the washer jets may ice up at very low temperatures.

Rear window wiper

Contrary to the description in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI, your MINI John Cooper Works GP does not have a rear wiper.

Entertainment

Setting tone controls

One feature that differs from the description in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI is that you have the following option for tone setting:

Fader: depending on your vehicle’s equipment, it is possible to adjust the volume distribution between the upper/lower speakers in the front doors.

Engine compartment

Strut brace

Only have the strut brace removed by your MINI dealer.

Power distribution box

Contrary to the description in the Owner’s Manual for the MINI, in your MINI John Cooper Works GP, the cover of the power distribution box cannot be removed without removing the strut brace. For this reason, have fuses replaced by your MINI dealer.

Fuel grade

Be sure to follow all instructions regarding fuel grade and refueling in the Owner’s Manual of the vehicle; failure to do so can result in permanent damage to the engine.

  • Super Premium Gasoline/AKI 91. This gasoline is highly recommended. However, you may also use gasoline with a lower AKI. The minimum AKI Rating is 89.

Vehicle care

Washing your vehicle

Do not wash the MINI John Cooper Works GP in automatic car washes with a conveyor; otherwise, you may damage the vehicle underbody.

Do not use steam jets or high-pressure washers in the region of the serial number on the roof and the rear spoiler connection to the rear window; otherwise, you may damage them.

Light alloy wheels

Your MINI John Cooper Works GP is equipped with reduced-weight light alloy wheels. Clean these using MINI rim cleaner gel. To completely remove brake dust, you can get a special cleaning brush with different attachments at your MINI dealer.

Toolkit

Toolkit

The tool for adjusting the coil-over suspension is stowed in the luggage compartment.

  1. Dual wrench
  2. Hook wrench
  3. Setting gauge

Wheels and tires

Sport tires

Your MINI John Cooper Works GP is equipped with sport tires. The dry grip has been increased significantly relative to conventional street tires. This results in the following limitations:

Depending on your driving style, higher tire wear will result in shorter mileages before the minimum tread depth is reached.

Set the inflation pressure according to the pressure indications on the door pillar of the driver’s door. If you fail to observe this precaution you may be driving on tires with incorrect tire pressures, a condition that can not only compromise your vehicle’s driving stability, but also lead to tire damage and the risk of an accident.

Because of the special tire tread, there is an increased risk of hydroplaning on wet roads. When driving on wet or slushy roads, reduce road speed. If you do not, a wedge of water can form between tires and road surface. This state is also known as hydroplaning and can result in a loss of control over the vehicle and a loss of braking power. The tire grip decreases significantly at low outside temperatures and tire operating temperatures, which my lead to loss of control of the vehicle. At outside temperatures of less than +457/+76, change to winter tires. Inform other people who use the vehicle in addition to you of these limitations
