How to prepare your Mac for Apple Trade In

If you opted to trade in your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air when you purchased a new Apple product, you’ll get a trade-in kit in the mail with everything you need to ship your MacBook to Apple.  Here’s everything you need to know about preparing and packing your MacBook to trade it in.

Before you ship your Mac

  1. Back up your data. If you need help transferring data, schedule an appointment at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Store at getsupport.apple.com. It is your sole responsibility to back up all existing data, software, and/or programs from your product. Apple is not responsible for loss, recovery, or compromise of data, software, or programs on your trade-in product.
  2. Sign out of iCloud.
  3. Turn off your firmware password.
  4. Deauthorize your computer for content purchases.
  5. If you’re concerned about the security of your data, erase your hard disk before sending in your Mac.

Pack your product using the included packaging materials

  1. Remove the insert from the box.

  2. Fold the side flaps of the insert up to loosen the plastic sleeve.

  3. Slide your device under the plastic sleeve.

  4. Fold down the side flaps of the insert.

  5. Push in the top and bottom flaps of the insert to re-fold them.

  6. Place the insert into the box.

  7. Close the box.

  8. Seal the box with the tape provided.*

Ship your product to Apple

  1. Find the name of the courier on the return shipping label.

  2. Visit the courier’s website to find a drop-off location.

  3. Get a receipt from the courier.

  4. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in.
