Supporting your child for their online coding session
Here are our top five tips for ensuring that your child is ready to attend an
online coding club session.
Prepare your child’s device ahead of time
In advance of the online session, check that the video conferencing tool for attending the session works on the device your child will use. If required, install or make an account for the tool. Contact your club organiser if you have any questions about this.
Have open conversations about online safety
It’s important that you have regular conversations with your child about
online safety. Check the NSPCC online safety web page to find a wealth of
information to help you with this.
Remind your child that when online:
- They should never share ANY personal information (such as their address, phone number, or the name of their school).
- If they feel uncomfortable about anything that has happened online, they must speak to you or a trusted adult about it immediately.
Share our code of behaviour with your child
Spend some time looking at our online code of behaviour with your child. Talk to your child about the code of behaviour to make sure they understand why following it will help them get the most out of the online session.
Choose a good place to learn
Decide where your child will be while they attend the online session. Preferably this should be in an open and safe environment where you can see and hear what they are doing. For example, a living room area is better than their bedroom.
Help your child manage their own learning
Help your child join the session, but let them be in the driving seat. You may be able to fix errors quicker than they can, but you should give them the opportunity to solve these problems themselves. This will help them build confidence, especially if they are new to coding. Attending an online coding club session should be fun, informal, and open for creativity. Be present and ask them questions about what they are creating — this will aid their learning experience and give them a real sense of ownership.
