OVERVIEW
WET FILM COMBS
Elcometer 112, 3236 & 112AL
| Precision formed long-lasting and reusable hexagonal stainless steel wet film combs. Available in a range of thicknesses measuring up to 3000μm (120mils) with 24 or 36 measurement steps depending on the comb.
An aluminium version of the Elcometer 112 is also available, the Elcometer 112ALa. Supplied in packs of 10, each aluminium comb has Metric (25 – 3000μm) on one side and Imperial (1 – 118mils) on the other.
Elcometer 154
| Made from ABS plastic designed to be used once and kept as a record of wet film thickness measurement for quality assurance or customer requirements. Supplied in packs of 500, each comb has Metric (50 – 800μm) on one side and Imperial (7 – 32mils) on the other.
Elcometer 115
| Precision formed long-lasting and reusable stainless steel wet film combs. Four separate wet film thickness ranges are available up to a maximum of 1250µm (50mils) and each comb has 10 measurement steps (teeth).
Elcometer 3238
| Similar to the Elcometer 115, the Elcometer 3238 provides the user with more measurement steps (teeth) – 24 per comb. Three separate wet film thickness ranges are available up to a maximum of 1200µm (48mils).
WET FILM WHEELS
Elcometer 3230
| The Elcometer 3230 wet film wheel consists of a central eccentric wheel and two outer concentric wheels. The diameter of the outer wheels is greater than that of the central wheel. By rolling the gauge through a wet coating, the centre wheel eventually touches the film. This point on the scale indicates the thickness. Various wet film thickness ranges are available up to a maximum of 1000µm (40mils).
Elcometer 3230
(Coil Coating)
| Similar to the Elcometer 3230 but the outer wheels are knurled to allow measurements to be taken on slippery coatings or on fast-moving substrates. Two separate wet film thickness ranges are available; 0 – 50μm (0 – 2mils) and 0 – 100μm (0 – 4mils).
a The Elcometer 112AL can be customised with your logo. Please contact Elcometer or your local Elcometer supplier for further information.

TEST PROCEDURE
Before you start, ensure the wet film comb or wheel is clean, see Section 3.3 ‘Cleaning After Test’ on page en-4, and undamaged as damage to the wet film teeth or wheel circumference will affect the readings.
USING A WET FILM COMB
- Hold the comb perpendicular to the wet film and press the edge of the comb into the film until it is stable on the substrate.
- Remove the comb from the wet film.
- Examine the teeth of the comb and locate the last tooth which is wetted.
Read the thickness value of this tooth. The wet film thickness is between this value and the thickness value of the next dry tooth.
In the example shown, the wet film thickness lies between 2400μm and 2600μm.To use the comb on pipes, ensure it is placed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe.
On rough surfaces, measurements will be made from the surface peaks and therefore will represent the minimum wet film thickness.
b A storage wallet/case is not supplied with the Elcometer 112AL and Elcometer
154.
c Calibration certificates are not available for the Elcometer 112AL,
Elcometer 154 and Elcometer 3230 Coil Coating Wet Film Wheels.
USING A WET FILM WHEEL
The procedure outlined below is for guidance only. Consult the relevant Standard for full details of the applicable test procedure.
- Using a finger and thumb, hold the wheel by its central spindle with the maximum reading on the scale nearest to the paint film.
- Place the wheel into the wet film ensuring that the wheel is perpendicular to the film.
- Roll the wheel across the film through 360°/180° (depending upon standard) and then remove it from the surface.
- Locate the first point on the central wheel where the paint has adhered. Read the wet film thickness from the scale on the side of the wheel at this point.
Repeat the procedure at least twice in different places to obtain
representative results.
To use the wheel on pipes, roll the wheel at right angles to the longitudinal
axis of the pipe.
On rough surfaces, measurements will be made from the surface peaks and
therefore will represent the minimum wet film thickness.
CLEANING AFTER TEST
Clean the wet film comb or wheel after each test using a suitable solvent. After cleaning, ensure that all materials are removed and that the gauge is dry.
DO NOT use very aggressive solvents or wire brushes, metal scrapers, metal files, or other metallic tools for cleaning.
Store the wet film comb or wheel in the wallet/case provided when not in use.
b A storage wallet/case is not supplied with the Elcometer 112AL and Elcometer
154.
d Does not apply to the Elcometer 154 which are designed to be used once and
kept as a record of wet film thickness measurement for quality assurance or
customer requirements.
