ULTRAVOICE UV1 Controls

Step 2: Controls

behringer ULTRAVOICE UV1 Audiophile Mic Preamplifier User Guide -
Controls

  1. INPUT – Connect a microphone or other line level source via balanced XLR or ¼” cable.
  2. GAIN – Adjust the input gain so that the adjacent level meter occasionally lights yellow.
  3. LEVEL METER – Displays the signal level of the main input.
  4. 48 V – Engage 48 V phantom power for use with condenser microphones.
  5. LOW CUT – Removes low frequencies below 80 Hz.
  6. PROCESS BYPASS – Allows the signal to bypass the compressor, dresser, enhancer, expander/gate, and output gain sections. Use this feature to audition the result of the effects against the raw signal.
  7. COMPRESSOR DRIVE – Adjusts the overall amount of gain reduction by controlling the signal level entering the compressor. When used with weak input levels, the Drive control can add considerable gain, while gain addition to hotter signals will be less noticeable.
  8. GAIN REDUCTION – Displays the amount of attenuation from the compressor.
  9. COMPRESSOR DENSITY – Adjusts the release time of the compressor. Lower settings yield slower, smoother results ideal for vocals. Higher settings have a fast, tight release that works well for percussive sources.
  10. DE-ESSER FREQUENCY – Sets the operation frequency of the variable filter, usually between 4-8 kHz for vocal applications.
  11. DE-ESSER THRESHOLD – Adjusts the sensitivity of the de-esker effect relative to the input level.
  12. DE-ESSER LEDs – Displays the amount of sibilance reduction. Green indicates 1 dB and red indicates 6 dB of reduction.
  13. ENHANCER LF DETAIL – Simultaneously boosts frequencies at 80 Hz and cuts frequencies at 250 Hz.
  14. ENHANCER HF DETAIL – Determines how much dynamic high frequency enhancement is applied to the signal, which responds to the input signal in real time and adapts the EQ response accordingly.
  15. EXP/GATE THRESHOLD – Adjusts the level at which the gate opens and allows the signal to pass through to the output.
  16. EXP/GATE LEDs– The red LED lights when the signal is below the threshold and the green LED lights when the signal is above the threshold.
  17. EXP/GATE RATIO – Sets the amount of attenuation applied to the signal once it falls below the threshold setting. A lower ratio setting usually allows a higher threshold setting without causing unwanted pumping effects.
  18. OUTPUT GAIN – Adjusts the output level. If the associated clip LED lights, turn the knob down to avoid distortion.
  19. MONITOR MIX – Adjust the blend of direct sound and playback from the USB connection. Fully counter clockwise selects only the direct signal, and fully clockwise selects USB playback.
  20. MONITOR LEVEL – Adjusts the headphone volume.
  21. HEADPHONES OUT – Connect a pair of stereo headphones.
  22. USB LED – Lights to indicate successful USB connection.
  23. POWER ON/OFF – Turns the unit on and off.
  24. AC INPUT – Connect the included power cable.
  25. USB IN/OUT – Connect a computer via USB cable to send stereo signals to and from the unit. The USB driver for Windows is available on Behringer.com. For Mac OS there is no driver required.
  26. LINE IN – Connect a line-level source via ¼” TS cable. This signal will be transmitted to the USB interface but is not affected by any of the front panel processing.
  27. INSERT SEND/RETURN – Allows an external processor to be routed into the signal path after the mic preamp but before the processing section.
  28. LINE OUT – Send the output signal to an amp or mixer via XLR or ¼” cable.

UV1 Getting started

Step 3: Getting started

BASIC OPERATION

  1. Make all necessary audio and power connections as shown in the Hook-up chapter.
  2. Turn the MONITOR LEVEL and OUTPUT GAIN knobs all the way down.
  3. If a condenser microphone is connected, engage the 48 V phantom power button.
  4. Engage the PROCESS BYPASS button to listen to the pure microphone signal first.
  5. Put on a pair of headphones to monitor the vocal signal.
  6. While singing into the connected microphone at realistic levels, turn the GAIN knob in the preamp section up while observing the LEVEL METER. Set the knob so that the loudest peaks in your singing cause the +12 dB LED to light briefly.
  7. Turn all of the knobs in the COMPRESSOR, DE-ESSER, ENHANCER and EXPANDER/GATE sections fully counter clockwise.
  8. Turn the OUTPUT GAIN knob up to the 0 dB setting.
  9. Turn the MIX knob fully counter clockwise.
  10. Sing into the microphone while adjusting the MONITOR LEVEL knob to a comfortable listening volume.
  11. Disengage the PROCESS BYPASS button to enable the following sound-shaping sections.
  12. Adjust the amount of desired compression by turning up the COMPRESSOR DRIVE knob. Note that this will increase the overall volume level, so adjust the OUTPUT GAIN to compensate. Observe the GAIN REDUCTION meter to determine the amount of compression being applied to the signal. Most vocal applications will benefit from around 6 to 9 dB of reduction.
  13. Set the compressor release time with the COMPRESSOR DENSITY knob, which should be set low for use with vocals.
  14. If audible sibilance is a problem, set the DE-ESSER FREQUENCY between 4-8 kHz and turn the DE-ESSER THRESHOLD up until the harsh “S” sounds are tamed.
  15. Use the HF DETAIL to add high frequency energy to the signal, or LF DETAIL to add punch and definition in the lows.
  16. To mute unwanted background noise, set the EXP/GATE RATIO knob to the center 2:1 position, then turn the EXP/GATE THRESHOLD knob up until whispering causes the associated red LED to turn off and green LED to turn on.

USB/RECORDING SETUP

  1. If a Windows PC will be used for recording, download and install the USB driver from the product page on Behringer.com. Mac computers do not need any additional drivers.
  2. Connect a USB cable from a computer to the USB port on the rear panel.
  3. Open your DAW/recording software and ensure that the UV2860 is selected as the input/output device.
  4. While recording, the channel being recorded to should be muted so the signal does not appear in the playback signal.
  5. Adjust the MIX knob to achieve a suitable balance between your direct vocal sound and the audio playback from your software.
  6. To record the pure mic preamp signal, press the PROCESS BYPASS button. This is preferable for editing the vocal recording with DAW effect plug-ins.
  7. 2-channel recordings are possible by using the rear panel LINE IN jack in conjunction with the front input. Note that this input has no level control, so the level should be adjusted on the connected device to ensure sufficient signal and avoid clipping.
