SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND INSTRUCTION MANUAL

WARNING

IMPROPER OR UNSAFE use of this power tool can result in death or serious bodily injury! This manual contains important information about product safety. Please read and understand this manual BEFORE operating the power tool. Please keep this manual available for other users and owners before they use the power tool.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Read and understand all of the safety precautions, warnings and operating instructions in the Instruction Manual before operating or maintaining this power tool.
Most accidents that result from power tool operation and maintenance are caused by the failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing a potentially hazardous situation before it occurs, and by observing appropriate safety procedures.

Basic safety precautions are outlined in the “SAFETY” section of this Instruction Manual and in the sections which contain the operation and maintenance instructions.
Hazards that must be avoided to prevent bodily injury or machine damage are identified by WARNINGS on the power tool and in this Instruction Manual.
NEVER use this power tool in a manner that has not been specifically recommended by metabo HPT.

SAFETY

GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS

WARNING
Read all safety warnings and all instructions.
Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fi re and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1. Work area safety
   a) Keep work area clean and well lit.
   Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
   b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust.
   Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
   c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.
   Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2. Electrical safety
   a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way.
   Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools.
   Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
   b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators.
   There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
   c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
   Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
   d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool.
   Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.
   Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
   e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
   f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply.
   Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3. Personal safety
   a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the infl uence of drugs, alcohol or medication.
   A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
   b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection.
   Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
   c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off -position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.
   Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
   d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on.
   A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
   e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
   This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
   f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts.
   Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
   g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used.
   Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

4. Power tool use and care
   a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application.
   The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
   b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off .
   Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
   c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
   Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
   d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool.
   Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
   e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may aff ect the power tool’s operation.
   If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use.
   Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
   f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
   g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.
   Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5. Service
   a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts.
   This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

SPECIAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

General safety instructions for grinding:

Use

• a) This power tool is designed for surface grinding. Refer to all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifi cations provided with this power tool.
  Failure to follow all the instructions may result in electric shock, fi re and/or serious injury.

• b) This power tool is not suitable for routing, polishing, sanding, working with roughing discs, wire brushes, parting grinder discs or fl ap discs. Using the power tool for tasks for which it was not designed may create a hazard and cause personal injury.

• c) Do not use accessories that are not specifi cally designed and recommended by the tool manufacturer.
  Just because an accessory can be attached to your power tool does not mean safe operation is guaranteed.

• d) The rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the power tool.
  Accessories running faster than their rated speed can break and fl y apart.

• e) The outside diameter and the thickness of your accessory must be within the capacity rating of your power tool.
  Incorrectly sized accessories cannot be adequately protected or controlled.

• f) Threaded mounting of accessories must match the grinder spindle thread. For accessories mounted by fl anges, the arbour hole of the accessory must fi t the locating diameter of the fl ange.
  Accessories that do not match the mounting hardware of the power tool will run out of balance, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control.

• g) Do not use a damaged accessory. Before use, always check accessories for splinters or cracks and check grinding wheels for cracks or signs of severe wear and tear. If a power tool or accessory is dropped, inspect for damage or install an undamaged accessory. After inspecting and installing an accessory, position yourself and bystanders away from the plane of the rotating accessory and run the power tool at maximum no-load speed for one minute.
  Damaged accessories will normally break apart during this test time.

• h) Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on the application, use a face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. As appropriate, wear a dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments.
  The eye protection must be capable of stopping fl ying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of fi ltering particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.

• i) Keep bystanders a safe distance away from your work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of a workpiece or broken accessory may fl y into the air and cause injury beyond the immediate area of operation.

• j) Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.
  A cutting accessory that comes in contact with a “live” wire may render exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and give the operator an electric shock.

• k) Position the cord clear of the spinning accessory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled into the spinning accessory.

• I) Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop.
  The spinning accessory may catch the surface and pull the power tool out of your control.

• m) Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side.
  Accidental contact with the spinning accessory could snag your clothing, pulling the accessory into your body.

• n) Regularly clean the power tool’s air vents.
  The motor’s fan draws dust into the housing.

• o) Do not operate the power tool near flammable materials.
  Sparks could ignite these materials.

• p) Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants.
  Using water or other liquid coolants may result in electrocution or shock.

KICKBACK AND RELATED WARNINGS

Kickback is the sudden response to an accessory pinching or jamming while rotating. Pinching or jamming causes the rotating accessory to stop abruptly, which in turn forces the uncontrolled power tool in the direction against the accessory’s rotation at the point of jamming.
Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions. It can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below.

• a) Maintain a fi rm grip on the power tool and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use the auxiliary handle for maximum control over kickback or torque reaction during start-up.
  The operator can control torque reactions or kickback forces, if proper precautions are taken.

• b) Never place your hand near the rotating accessory.
  The accessory may kickback over your hand.

• c) Do not allow your body to enter the area where the power tool would move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the power tool in the opposite direction of the accessory’s movement at the point of jamming.

• d) Use special care when working around corners, sharp edges etc. You must prevent accessories from bouncing off the power tool and becoming jammed.
  A rotating accessory tends to jam around corners and sharp edges and also if bouncing occurs, thus causing loss of control or kickback.

• e) Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade or toothed saw blade.
  Such blades create frequent kickback and loss of control.

SAFETY WARNINGS SPECIFIC FOR GRINDING WITH DIAMOND CUP WHEELS

• a) Use only wheel types that are recommended for your power tool and the specifi c guard designed for the selected wheel.
  Wheels for which the power tool was not designed cannot be adequately guarded and are unsafe.

• b) The safety guard must be securely attached to the power tool. Always direct the power tool so that the wheel is not openly exposed to the operator.
  The guard helps to protect the operator from broken fragments, accidental contact with the wheel and sparks that could ignite clothing.

• c) Wheels must be used only for recommended applications.

• d) Always use undamaged wheel flanges that are the correct size and shape for your selected accessories.
  Th ceorrec fltanges support the accessories.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

• WARNING – Always wear protective goggles.
• Wear a suitable dust protection mask.
• Always operate with two hands.

Observe the specifications of the accessory manufacturer! Protect the accessories from grease and physical impact.
Accessories must be stored and handled with care in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
The workpiece must be seated firmly and be secured against slipping, e.g. using clamps. Large workpieces must be supported adequately.

If accessories with threaded inserts are used, the end of the spindle may not touch the base of the hole on the grinding tool. Make sure that the thread in the accessory is long enough to accommodate the full length of the spindle. The thread in the accessory must match the thread on the spindle. See page 7 SPECIFICATIONS for more information on the spindle length and thread.
Impurities that manage to enter the machine may block the switching mechanism. This is why, when the machine is running, it is necessary to blow compressed air through the rear ventilation slots of the machine regularly, frequently and thoroughly. The machine must be held fi rmly in this case.

Additional Warnings:
Observe the relevant guidelines for your material, staff , application and place of application (e.g. occupational health and safety regulations, disposal).
Collect the generated particles at the source, avoid deposits in the surrounding area.
Use suitable accessories for special work (See page 11 ACCESSORIES), thus less particles enter the environment in an uncontrolled manner.
Use a suitable extraction unit.
Reduce dust exposure with the following measures:

• For efficient dust collection, use a suitable metabo HPT (L-class and over) vacuum cleaner together with this power tool.
• Do not direct the escaping particles and the exhaust air stream at yourself or nearby persons or on dust deposits
• Use an extraction unit and/or air purifiers
• Maintain good ventilation of the workplace and keep clean using a vacuum cleaner Sweeping or blowing will stir up dust
• Vacuum or wash your protective clothing Do not blow, beat or brush.

DOUBLE INSULATION FOR SAFER OPERATION

To ensure safer operation of this power tool, metabo HPT has adopted a double insulation design. “Double insulation” means that two physically separated insulation systems have been used to insulate the electrically conductive materials connected to the power supply from the outer frame handled by the operator. Therefore, either the symbol “ ” or the words “Double insulation” appear on the power tool or on the nameplate.
Although this system has no external grounding, you must still follow the normal electrical safety precautions given in this Instruction Manual, including not using the power tool in wet environments.
To keep the double insulation system effective, follow these precautions:

• Only metabo HPT AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER should disassemble or assemble this power tool, and only genuine metabo HPT replacement parts should be installed.
• Clean the exterior of the power tool only with a soft cloth moistened with soapy water, and dry thoroughly. Never use solvents, gasoline or thinners on plastic components; otherwise the plastic may dissolve.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

NOTE

The information contained in this Instruction Manual is designed to assist you in the safe operation and maintenance
of the power tool.
NEVER operate, or attempt any maintenance on the tool unless you have fi rst read and understood all safety instructions contained in this manual.
Some illustrations in this Instruction Manual may show details or attachments that diff er from those on your own power tool.

ASSEMBLY AND OPERATION

SPECIFIED USE

When fi tted with original metabo HPT accessories, the machine is suitable for grinding and removing concrete, screed and coatings with diamond cup wheels.
Do not use for abrasive cutting-off operations, roughing work, sanding, polishing or flap disc work.
The machine must not be used with water.
NOTE The ring brush may stick when thermoelastic materials are processed.

The machine is suitable for commercial use in trade and industry.
Always use a suitable dust extraction system: Connect a vacuum cleaner (L-class and over) to the extractor connection piece.
The user bears sole responsibility for any damage caused by improper use.
Generally accepted accident prevention regulations and the enclosed safety information must be observed.

INITIAL OPERATION

WARNING
Before plugging in the machine, check that the rated mains voltage and mains frequency, as specifi ed on the rating label, match your power supply.

Fitting of bar auxiliary handle

WARNING
Always work with the bar auxiliary handle attached! Fit the bar auxiliary handle as shown (Fig. 2).

•  Fit locking discs to the left and right of the gear housing.
• Fit the bar auxiliary handle at the gear housing.
•  Insert the thumb screws left and right into the bar auxiliary handle and turn gently.
• Adjust the bar auxiliary handle to the required angle.
• Firmly tighten the thumb screws to the left and right manually.

  Dust extraction

WARNING
Always use a suitable dust extraction system: Connect an L-class and over vacuum cleaner to the extractor connection piece.

For optimal dust extraction, use the connecting sleeve.

ATTACHING THE ACCESSORY

WARNING
Disconnect the mains plug before changing any accessories. The machine must be switched off and the spindle must be at a standstill.

Locking the spindle (Fig. 3)

WARNING
Press in the spindle locking knob only when the spindle is stationary!

– Press in the spindle locking button and turn the spindle by hand until you feel the spindle locking button engage.

Fitting/removing the diamond cup wheel (Fig. 3) To fit:

• Fit the support fl ange on the spindle. The flange should not turn on the spindle when properly attached.
•  Lay the diamond cup wheel on the support fl ange so that it lies fl at along the support fl ange.
•  The two sides of the clamping nut are different. Screw the clamping nut onto the spindle so that the band of the clamping nut is facing upward.
•  Lock the spindle (see chapter 1). Turn the clamping nut clockwise using the 2-hole spanner to secure.

To remove:

•  Lock the spindle (see chapter 1). Turn the clamping nut anticlockwise using the 2-hole spanner to unscrew.

USE

Working close to walls (Fig. 4)

WARNING
To open and close the segment: switch off the machine and pull the mains plug. The accessory must be stationary.

WARNING
Only raise the segment when working close to walls. Otherwise, the segment must be lowered. The open area of the safety guard must face the direction of the wall.

Setting the speed (Fig. 4)
Set the optimum speed on the setting wheel, depending on the application.
A wheel setting of between 4 and 6 is suitable for most applications.

Switching On and Off

WARNING
Always guide the machine with both hands.

WARNING
Switch on fi rst, then guide the accessory towards the workpiece.

WARNING
The machine must not be allowed to draw in additional dust and shavings. When switching the machine on and off , keep it away from dust deposits. After switching off the machine, only set it down when the motor has come to a standstill.

WARNING
Avoid inadvertent starts: always switch the tool off when the plug is removed from the mains socket or if there has been a power cut.

WARNING
In continuous operation, the machine continues running if it is forced out of your hands. Therefore, always hold the machine with both hands using the handles provided, stand in a safe position and concentrate on the work.

Torque activation

Switching on: Slide the trigger switch forwards and then  push the trigger switch upwards.

Switching off : Release the trigger switch.

Continuous operation Switching on: Switch the machine on as described above. Now slide the trigger switch forwards again and release in the front position to lock the trigger switch (continuous operation).
Switching off : Push the trigger switch upwards and release.

CLEANING, MAINTENANCE

• Motor cleaning: The machine must be vacuumed regularly, frequently and thoroughly through the ventilation slots using a suitable vacuum cleaner.
  The machine must be held fi rmly in this case.

• Replacing the spring-mounted ring brush:

• Replace worn brushes for optimal dust extraction. Replacement brush set: Order No. 377100

TROUBLESHOOTING

Machines with VTC and TC electronics: (Fig.4)

The electronic signal display lights up and the load speed decreases. There is too much load on the machine! Run the machine in idling until the electronics signal indicator switches off .

The machine does not start. The electronic signal display fl ashes. The restart protection is active. If the mains plug is inserted with the machine switched on, or if the power supply is restored following an interruption, the machine does not start up. Switch the machine off and on again.

REPAIRS

WARNING
Repairs to electrical tools must be carried out by qualifi ed electricians ONLY!

A defective mains cable must only be replaced with a special, original mains cable from metabo HPT, which is available only from the metabo HPT service.
If you have metabo HPT electrical tools that require repairs, please contact your metabo HPT service centre.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The sanding dust generated may contain hazardous materials: do not dispose of this dust with household waste, but at a special collection point for hazardous waste.
Observe national regulations on environmentally compatible disposal and on the recycling of disused machines, packaging and accessories.

Never use any accessories other than those mentioned below.
The use of any accessories other than those mentioned below or attachments not intended for use
such as cup wheel, cut-off wheel or saw blade is dangerous and may cause personal injury or property damage.
