INTRODUCTION

HVAC40… series transmitters and hygrostats measure temperature, relative humidity and dew point using an interchangeable relative humidity and temperature digital sensor.
A stainless steel 10 µm filter protects the sensor against dust and particles (other filters are available for different applications).
The probe is available in three different versions:

  • fixed vertical probe for wall mounting (HVAC40…TV);
  • fixed probe with 2 m cable (HVAC40…TC.2);
  • fixed duct horizontal probe (HVAC40…TO).

Available outputs, depending on the model:

  • RS485 ModbusRTU digital output (HVAC40S17…);
  • 0…10 V voltage analog output (HVAC40V17…);
  • 0…20 mA / 4…20 mA active current analog output (HVAC4017…);
  • 2-wire (current loop) 4…20 mA analog output (HVAC40A17…);
  • ON/OFF relay switch (HVAC40R17…).

Versions with a 4-digit LCD display (option L) are available, which allow the measured parameters to be displayed.
In the versions with LCD, two LED indicators indicate the presence of the power supply and of an eventual alarm condition: exceeding of the set measurements thresholds, in the versions with relay switch output; measurement detected outside the measuring range, in the versions with analog or digital output.
The instruments are factory calibrated and ready for use.
The configuration can be made by connecting the serial port of the instrument to the PC or by means of the quick configuration dip switches on the circuit board. The versions with relay switch output are equipped with two internal buttons for the configuration via the display.

INSTALLATION

By opening the lid, 3 mm diameter holes are available so to allow securing the base of the instrument directly to a panel or to the wall.

The models with duct horizontal probe can be fixed by using the HD9008.31 flange, a PG16 metal cable gland ( 10…14 mm) or a 3/8″ universal biconical connection.

Internally there are :

  • the terminal header for connecting the power supply and the output;
  • the RS232 serial connector (COM AUX, except HVAC40S17…);
  • the dip switches for quick configuration.
  • the buttons for the configuration via display (only HVAC40R17…).

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

Models with digital RS485 output (HVAC40S17…)
In the RS485 connection, the instruments are connected in a sequence through a shielded cable with twisted pair for signals and a third wire for the common. Line termination must be set at the two network ends.
The maximum number of devices that can be connected to the RS485 line (Bus) depends on the load characteristics of the devices to be connected. The RS485 standard requires that the total load does not exceed 32 unit loads. A load of an HVAC40S17T… transmitter is equal to ¼ of the unit load. If the total load is greater than 32 unit loads, divide the network into segments and add a signal repeater between a segment and the successive one. Line termination should be applied at both ends of each segment.
The instrument has a built-in line termination that can be connected or removed through a short jumper placed at the bottom of the electronic board. If the instrument is the last or the first device of a networking group, connect the termination by placing the short jumper on the “RT ON” side. If the instrument is not at the end of a networking group, disconnect the termination by placing the short jumper on the side opposite “RT ON”.
The cable shield must be connected to both lines’ ends. The cable should have the following features:

  • Characteristic impedance: 120 ohm
  • Capacity: less than 50pF/m
  • Resistance: less than 100 ohm/km
  • Gauge: 0,22 mm2 (AWG24) at least

The cable maximum length depends on the baud rate and cable characteristics. Typically, the maximum length is 1200 m. The data line must be kept separated from any power lines in order to prevent interferences with the transmitted signal.
3.2 CONFIGURATION DIP SWITCHES IN THE MODELS WITH ANALOG OUTPUT
HVAC4017T…, HVAC40A17T…, and HVAC40V17T… transmitters have 4 pre-configured temperature ranges for the analog output. In order to use a preconfigured temperature range, set the dip switch 1 to ON and set the temperature range with the dip switches 2 and 3, according to the following table:

Dip switch number

| Temperature

range

---|---
1| 2| 3
ON| OFF| ON| 0…+50 °C
ON| ON| OFF| -20…+50 °C
ON| OFF| OFF| -20…+80 °C
ON| ON| ON| 0…+80 °C
OFF| N.U| N.U| Set via serial

In the HVAC4017T… and HVAC40V17T… models, with active analog output, a dip switch is OFF when placed down; instead, it is ON if placed up. The dip switch 1 is on the left.
In the HVAC40A17T… models, with 2-wire current output, a dip switch is OFF when placed on the right; instead, it is ON if placed on the left. The dip switch 1 is at the bottom.
If a temperature range other than the preconfigured ones is desired, it is necessary to set the dip switch 1 to OFF and set the temperature range via COM AUX serial port.
Note: the 4 preconfigured temperature ranges can also be set via COM AUX serial port with the commands K0…K3.
The dip switch 4 is used to select the relative humidity (R.H.) or the dew point (D.P.) measurement.

Dip switch number
| Measurement
---|---
4
OFF| R.H.
ON| D.P.

3.3 CONFIGURATION DIP SWITCHES IN THE MODELS WITH RS485 DIGITAL OUTPUT
In the HVAC40S17… models, the transmitter Modbus address is equal to the sum of the value set with the dip switches (value settable from 0 to 15) and the value set with the serial command MA (value settable from 1 to 216, default = 1). By setting a dip switch to ON (upwards), the following values are added to the address:

| Dip switch number
---|---
1| 2| 3| 4
ON| 8| 4| 2| 1
OFF| 0| 0| 0| 0

For example: if the dip switches 1 and 3 are set to ON and the dip switches 2 and 4 are set to OFF, the value set with the dip switches is 8+2=10. If the value set with the serial command MA is 1 (default value), the transmitter Modbus address is 10+1=11.
The dip switches can be set even if the transmitter is powered, and the change is effective immediately.
Note: in the models with RS485 digital output, the selection of the relative humidity or dew point measurement does not take place via a dip switch but via P0/P1 serial commands.
3.4 CONFIGURATION DIP SWITCHES IN THE MODELS WITH RELAY OUTPUT
In the HVAC40S17… models, the dip switch 2 is used to select the relative humidity (R.H.) or the dew point (D.P.) measurement.

OFF| R.H.
ON| D.P.

3.5 CONFIGURATION VIA THE SERIAL PORT

  1. HVAC4017T…, HVAC40A17T…, HVAC40V17T… and HVAC40R17T… models Connect the COM AUX serial port of the instrument to the RS232 (via the RS27 cable) or USB (via the cable CP27) port of the PC. If the CP27 cable is used, install the USB drivers on your PC.
    HVAC40S17T… models Connect the RS485 output of the instrument to the RS232 (via a RS485/RS232 converter) or USB (via a RS485/USB converter, for example the RS48 cable) port of the PC. If an RS485/USB converter is used, install the USB drivers on your PC.

  2. On the PC, launch a standard serial communication software and set the baud rate to 115200, the communication parameters to 8N2 and the COM port number to which the instrument is connected.

  3. Only for HVAC40S17T… models, power cycle the instrument and send the command @ within 10 seconds from the instrument power on.

  4. If necessary, send the CAL START command. The CAL START command enables the use of some commands, specified in the tables below. The command CAL START is automatically disabled after 5 minutes of inactivity or if the CAL END command or an incorrect command is sent.

  5. Send the setting or reading commands given below.

  6. Only for HVAC40S17T… models, power cycle the instrument to restore the MODBUS-RTU protocol.

European users can hand them over to the dealer or to the manufacturer when purchasing new electrical and electronic equipment, or to a WEEE collection point designated by local authorities. Illegal disposal is punished by law.
Disposing of electrical and electronic equipment separately from normal waste helps to preserve natural resources and allows materials to be recycled in an environmentally friendly way without risks to human health.
