SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS

WARNING: When using electrical appliances, especially when children are present, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and/or injury, including the following:

  1.  Read all instructions.
  2.  Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
  3.  To protect against electrical shock, do not immerse cord or plugs into water or other liquid.
  4.  Close supervision is necessary when this toaster is used by or near children.
  5.  Unplug from the outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts.
  6.  Do not operate the Digital Toaster with a damaged cord or plug, or after it malfunctions or has been damaged in any manner. Should this occur, contact Chefman® Customer Support.
  7.  The use of accessory attachments not recommended by Chefman® may cause injuries.
  8.  Do not let the cord hang over the edge of a table or counter or touch hot surfaces.
  9.  Do not place on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven.
  10.  To disconnect, turn any control to “off,” then remove the plug from the wall outlet.
  11.  Do not use the Digital Toaster for other than intended use.
  12.  Oversize foods, metal foil packages, or utensils must not be inserted in the toaster as they may involve a risk of fire or electrical shock.
  13.  A fire may occur if the toaster is covered or touching flammable material, including curtains, draperies, walls, and the like, when in operation.
  14.  Do not attempt to dislodge food when the toaster is plugged in.

WARNING: This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way or force it into the outlet. This could result in injury or electrical shock.

SHORT-CORD INSTRUCTIONS
A short power-supply cord is provided to reduce the hazards of entanglement or tripping over a longer cord. Longer detachable power-supply cords or extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use. If a longer detachable power-supply extension cord is used:

  1.  The marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance.
  2.  The cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over unintentionally.

POWER-CORD SAFETY TIPS

  1.  Never pull or yank on the cord or the appliance.
  2.  To insert the plug, grasp it firmly and guide it into the outlet.
  3.  To disconnect the appliance, grasp the plug and remove it from the outlet.
  4.  Before each use, inspect the power cord for cuts and/or abrasion marks. If any are found, contact Chefman® Customer Support for assistance.
  5.  Never wrap the cord tightly around the appliance, as this could place undue stress on the cord where it enters the appliance and cause it to fray and break.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

BEFORE FIRST USE

  1.  Remove all packing materials and stickers from the inside and outside of the toaster.
  2.  Gently wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth or paper towel. WARNING: Never immerse the toaster or its plug-in water or any other liquid. It is NOT dishwasher-safe.
  3.  Read all instructions and follow them carefully.

HOW TO USE
With your Digital Toaster, you can select the toasting mode and shade setting just the way you like it, then watch as the timer counts down to your perfect piece of toast.

  1.  Ensure the crumb tray is pushed all the way in (see Cleaning and Maintenance, p. 11). Plugin the Digital Toaster to put it in standby mode.
  2.  Turn the shade-setting knob to the desired setting (see chart, p. 8). The selected setting will appear on the LED display. The higher the number, the darker and crispier the results.
  3.  Put your desired food into the toasting slots. NOTE: Use only bread products and products designed for toasters, such as toaster pastries.
  4.  For simple toasting, press the lever all the way down to start. The timer will appear on the display and begin counting down.
  5.  If using the REHEAT, DEFROST, or BAGEL settings (see p. 8 and 9 for more information on those functions), push the lever all the way down, and then press one of those buttons. NOTE: Each button will illuminate when pressed.
  6.  When toasting is done, the Digital Toaster will automatically pop the food up for retrieval and return to standby mode. If the REHEAT, DEFROST, or BAGEL button was selected, the food will also pop up, and the unit will return to standby mode. CAUTION: Beware of hot surfaces when removing food from the toaster.
  7.  Lift the lever up above the ready position to raise the food higher for easier retrieval. WARNING: Never use metal utensils to remove food from the toaster.
  8.  To stop or check on your food at any time, press the CANCEL button. You can also simply push the lever up to cancel the toast cycle.
  9.  After 20 minutes of inactivity in standby mode, the unit will enter sleep mode, where the LED display and all function buttons are off. Pressing any button or adjusting the dial will return it to standby mode.
  10.  If the lever is pushed down while the unit is in sleep mode, the unit will begin toasting using the previously set shade.

SHADE SELECTOR TIMES

SPECIAL SETTINGS AND FEATURES
The Digital Toaster has 4 modes available at the push of a button as well as a special safety feature that automatically kicks in if food gets stuck in the toaster.

  • REHEAT: Use to warm toasted or cooled bread. May also be used to warm toaster pastries. This button, regardless of what shade setting is selected, will activate the Digital Toaster for 30 seconds.
  • DEFROST: Use for frozen foods like bread and waffles. This button defrosts and toasts simultaneously by increasing the toasting time by 10%.
  • BAGEL: Use for bagels or English muffins. For best results, insert cut bagels or English muffins into the toaster with the cut side facing out. This setting is designed to toast ONLY one side of the bread. In BAGEL mode, only the outward elements within the toasting slots heat up.
  • CANCEL: Use to stop toasting at any time. When the button is pressed, food will automatically pop up.
  • Anti-Jam Function: Your Digital Toaster is equipped with an anti-jam function. If food gets stuck in the Toaster, the unit will power off, the LED screen will display “Err,” and the CANCEL button will flash on and off. Once the food is removed, the unit will return to standby mode.

TOASTING TIPS

  • Do not put buttered bread or pastries with frostings into the toaster. This could create a fire hazard.
  • Never force food into the slots. Food should lower smoothly when the lever is pressed down, or it could get stuck.
  • Load bagels with cut sides facing out, since only the outward elements within the toasting slots heat up during BAGEL mode.
  • Lower your shade selection when toasting a single slice. The Digital Toaster is designed to heat the entire toasting chamber for two slices. When toasting a single slice, adjust the shade-setting knob lower than you usually would to avoid over-browning.
  • Adjust shade selection higher for fresh bread. Moisture in bread slows down toasting. For very fresh or moist bread, adjust the shade-setting knob higher than usual. For drier bread, adjust the knob downward.
  • Make quick and easy croutons. Toast your desired bread on a higher setting, then crumble over salad or soup.
  • Choose thicker slices of gluten-free bread to toast. Store-bought gluten-free bread tend to be thin and crumble easily, making it difficult to evenly toast and keep in one piece. When shopping for gluten-free bread to toast, choose thicker slices with sturdier crusts.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Your Digital Toaster requires very little maintenance, just the regular removal of crumbs.

  1.  Unplug the toaster and cool completely.
  2.  When the toaster is completely cool, wipe the exterior down with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any fingerprints or smudges.
  3.  Remove and clean the crumb tray periodically to avoid buildup:
    • Once the toaster is unplugged and fully cool, press the crumb tray at the bottom back of the toaster. It will then partially pop out so you can pull it out.
    • Use a sponge and warm, soapy water to wash. The crumb tray is NOT dishwasher-safe.
    • Dry the crumb tray completely.
Be sure to push the crumb tray all the way back inside the bottom of the toaster before the next use.

TROUBLESHOOTING FAQS

  • Why won’t the toaster turn on?
Check that the toaster is plugged in. If it is, make sure that the power cord is not visibly damaged in any way and that the power outlet being used is working. If the power cord is damaged in any way,
do not use the toaster. Contact Chefman® Customer Support for assistance.

  • My food is not burned, but a burning smell is coming from the toaster.
This can be caused by burning crumbs that have collected in the crumb tray. Let the toaster cool completely, then turn it upside down and gently shake over a trash bin to remove any excess crumbs. Follow the Cleaning and Maintenance instructions (see p. 11) on cleaning the crumb tray frequently to prevent a buildup of excess crumbs.

  • My bread has fallen apart and crumbled inside the toaster. How do I remove it?
Never insert metal utensils or forks into the toaster. Unplug the toaster and turn it upside down over the sink. If the entire piece does not come out, raise and lower the lever a few times.

  • My bread is stuck inside the toaster and lifting the lever does not raise it. How do I remove it?
Never insert metal utensils or forks into the toaster. Unplug the toaster and allow to cool, then gently use wooden or plastic tongs or chopsticks to help remove the stuck food. To prevent this problem, use thinner bread slices, and never force slices into the slots when items are too thick.
