SAFETY

DANGER

Incorrect handling, installation, maintenance or servicing can lead to accidents causing severe injuries or death!

  •  Compliance with the following provisions is a prerequisite for accident-free use and faultless performance.
  •  Assembly and maintenance of the wheels requires a basic knowledge of handling bicycle components. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.
  •  The wheels should be used only in accordance with their intended use. Otherwise the user shall assume responsibility.
  •  The maximum system weight of the wheels must not be exceeded.
  •  The maximum tire pressure of the wheel and of the tire used must not be exceeded.
  •  The wheels must be compatible with all parts of the bicycle.
  •  Only use original DT Swiss spare parts.
  •  The wheels must not be changed or modified.
  •  Check that the wheel is attached correctly before each ride.
  •  Regularly check the spoke tension, dish and wear of the wheel.
  •  Check the wheel for damage before and after each ride.
  •  The wheels must not be used if they are damaged or there are any signs of damage. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.

DANGER

Risk of accident due to worn Tubeless Ready Tape!

If the Tubeless Ready Tape is worn, there is a risk of sudden tire pressure loss which can lead to accidents with serious injuries or even death.

  • Check Tubeless Ready Tape every three months for signs of wear (see also “5. Service and care” on page 19).
  • The wheels must not be used if they are damaged or there are any signs of damage. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.

DANGER

Death can result from a reduction in performance or failure of rim brake wheels!

Worn brake surfaces can lead to sudden failure of the rim.

  •  Wheels with worn brake surfaces must not be used.
  •  When carbon rims are used, only “SwissStop Black Prince” brake pads may be used.
  • When OXIC wheels are used, only “SwissStop BXP Blue” brake pads may be used.
  • Otherwise the user shall assume full responsibility.
  •  If brake pads have previously been used with aluminium rims, these must not be used with carbon rims.
  • Brake using both brakes!
  •  When riding downhill brake only briefly, with pauses in between.
  • Avoid dragging or holding the brakes. The wheel will overheat, thus causing the failure of the rim, tire or inner tube.
  •  The braking power of carbon rims is generally lower than that of aluminium rims.
  •  If using new wheels or brake pads, the braking power is also reduced in wet conditions. Adjust the manner of cycling accordingly.

CAUTION

Risk of damaging the wheel by selecting incorrect components or tools!

  • Do not use metal tire levers. These can damage the surface of the rim, tire, or inner tube.
  • Use only valves with a suitable diameter and of an adequate length. The valve hole must not be modified.
  • Use only rim tape, inner tubes and tires which fit the dimensions of the rim.
  •  Rim brake carbon rims must not be used with latex tubes.

INTENDED USE
The range of use of DT Swiss wheels is divided into five categories – from rides on paved roads to use in the downhill or freeride sector (for details, see attached classification or www.dtswiss.com).
The wheels should be used only in accordance with their intended use. Otherwise the user shall assume responsibility.

ASSEMBLY

FITTING THE TIRES WITHOUT A TUBE
DT Swiss offers no functional guarantee for the tubeless system since we are unable to exert any influence on the tires and sealant used.

NOTE

Potential damage to the rim from unsuitable sealant fluid!

  •  DT Swiss recommends sealant fluid not containing materials which increase corrosion.
If in doubt, you must contact the manufacturer.

  •  The rim base must be inspected regularly for corrosion damage.
If there is visible corrosion, the rim must not be used further.

  •  In the case of corrosion clearly caused by the use of unsuitable sealant fluid, DT Swiss declines any liability and warranty whatsoever.

  1. Make sure that DT Swiss Tubeless Ready Tape and a DT Swiss Tubeless valve are mounted.

  2. Put sealant fluid into the tires. Comply with the instructions of the sealant manufacturer.

  3. Assemble the wheels according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
→ We recommend using soapy water or installation fluid.

  4. Pump the tires up to their maximum approved pressure.
→ The lower of the pressures specified for the rim (see table at start of this user manual) or tire applies.

  5. Check the tire seat.
→ The tire must contact the rim evenly around its entire circumference.
→ Have the tire seat checked by a professional if in any doubt.

  6. If necessary, reduce the tire pressure to the desired operating pressure.

FITTING TIRES WITH A TUBE

  1. Attach the rim tape.
→ DT Swiss Tubeless Ready Tape can be used as rim tape.

  2. Assemble the inner tube and tire according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

MOUNTING THE WHEEL WITH THE SUPPLIED QUICK RELEASE (RWS ECO)
If your wheel is mounted with another quick-release or a thru axle, the mounting must be carried out according to the model and manufacturer-specific instructions.
MOUNTING THE RWS ECO

  1. Unscrew the nut and remove one of the two springs.
  2. Push the axle of the RWS through the wheel axle.
  3. Place the spring with the small diameter first on the axle of the RWS and screw on the nut.
  4. Mount the wheel in the dropout of the fork or frame.

  CLOSING THE RWS ECO

  1. Hold the nut in place, turn the lever in a clockwise direction and secure as tightly as possible by hand (min. 15 Nm).
  2. Lift the RWS lever (A), turn it to the required position (B) and let go (C).
  3. Check to ensure the wheel is secured correctly in the frame or fork.

OPENING THE RWS ECO
Hold the nut in place, turn the lever of the RWS in an anti-clockwise direction.

CHECKS BEFORE EVERY RIDE
Before every ride, ensure that the wheel is securely mounted in the frame or fork. Ensure that the RWS lever is tightened to at least 15 Nm.
Quick test: Lift the bicycle so that the front or rear wheel is in the air. Now hit the wheel hard from above several times. The wheel must not come loose or fall out. This test does not guarantee that the RWS is preloaded with a minimum force of 15 Nm. If you are unsure whether your RWS is installed correctly, contact your dealer.

HANDLING

BRAKING CORRECTLY (ROAD CARBON)
Correct braking significantly affects the working life of wheels which have carbon brake surfaces. The following points should be noted:

  •  Carbon wheels have a different braking behaviour than aluminium wheels. Especially when it is wet, a lower braking effect must be expected.
  •  First cycle on roads with little traffic in order to familiarise yourself with the changed braking performance.
  •  Never let the brakes rub. Brake only for a short time, but hard. The longer the pauses between spells of braking, the better.
  •  If overheating occurs, the carbon lamination becomes loose , and the wheel distorts irreparably. This entails a significant risk of failure.
  •  New brake pads develop their full braking performance only after a few spells of braking. With new brake pads, expect reduced braking performance at first.

TRANSPORT
Correct transport avoids damage to the wheels. The following points should be noted:

  • Do not put carbon wheels under pressure.
  •  Do not place objects on the wheels.
  • Transport only individually in DT Swiss wheel bags.

TRANSPORT ON A VEHICLE

NOTE

Danger of damage to the wheel when transported on rear-mounted bicycle carriers from high exhaust gas temperatures!
When transporting at the rear of the vehicle, care must be taken to ensure sufficient distance between the exhaust and the wheel. For certain car models, an exhaust extension or shielding is necessary. Please note that the exhaust gas temperature and range may vary depending on the driving situation.

TRANSPORT IN A VEHICLE

  • When transporting in a vehicle, cover the wheels in order to shield from direct sunlight.
  • If carbon wheels are transported at a high temperature in the vehicle, reduce the tyre pressure.

STORAGE ( > 1 MONTH)
Careful storage prolongs the life of the wheels. Note the following points:

  •  Do not hang carbon wheels from hooks.
  • Release pressure from the tyres
  • Clean the wheels. In particular, completely remove salt residue.
  • Remove sealant fluid. The corrosion-accelerating properties of some sealant fluids can damage aluminium rims.
