Intended Use

Your BLACK+DECKER BHSM15FX08, BHSM15FX10 steam cleaning system has been designed for sanitizing and cleaning sealed hardwood, sealed laminate, linoleum,  inyl, ceramic tile, stone, marble floors and countertops. This appliance is intended for indoor household use only.
NOTE: Each hand held steam unit is 100% tested in the factory to  nsure product performance and safety. When assembling your new hand held steam unit for the first time you may notice water residue inside of the unit.

This instruction manual uses the following safety alert symbols and words to alert you to hazardous situations and your risk of personal injury or property damage.
DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: When using your appliance, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:

  1. Read all instructions.
  2. To reduce the risk of contact with hot water emitting from steam vents, check appliance before each use by holding it away from body and operating steam button.
  3. Use appliance only for its intended use.
  4. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not immerse the appliance in water or other liquids.
  5. Never yank cord to disconnect from outlet; instead, grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
  6. Do not allow cord to touch hot surfaces. Let appliance cool completely before putting away. Loop cord loosely around appliance when storing.
  7. Always disconnect appliance from electrical outlet when filling with water or emptying, and when not in use.
  8. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before servicing.
  9. Do not operate appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or if the appliance has been dropped or damaged. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble or  ttempt to repair the appliance, take it to a qualified service person for examination and repair. Incorrect reassembly or repair could cause a risk of fire, electric shock, or  njury to persons when the appliance is used.
  10. Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave appliance unattended while connected.
  11. Burns could occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use care when you turn a steam appliance upside down – there may be hot water in
    the reservoir.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

  1. To reduce the likelihood of circuit overload, do not operate another high wattage appliance on the same circuit.
  2. If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, use one with a higher ampere rating than the appliance. The appliance ampere rating is calculated by dividing the rated  attage (W) by the rated voltage (V) appearing on the nameplate. Cords rated for less amperage may overheat. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that the cord  annot be pulled or tripped over.

USING YOUR APPLIANCE

  • Do not direct steam at people, animals, electrical appliances or electrical outlets.
  • Do not expose to rain.
  • Do not immerse the appliance in water.
  • Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children.
  • Do not leave the appliance connected to an electrical outlet when not in use.
  • Never pull the power cord to disconnect the appliance from the socket. Keep the appliance cord away from heat, oil and sharp edges.
  • Do not handle steam cleaner with wet hands.
  • Use only as described in the manual. Use only manufacturer’s recommended attachments.
  • Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
  • Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as a handle, close door on cord, pull cord around sharp corners or expose cord to heated surfaces.
  • Do not use appliance in an enclosed space filled with vapor given off by oil-based paint thinner, some moth-proofing substances, flammable dust, or other explosive or toxic vapors.
  • Do not use on leather, wax polished furniture or floors, synthetic fabrics, velvet or other delicate, steamsensitive materials.
  • Do not use on any unsealed hard surfaces or painted surfaces. Additionally, on surfaces that have been treated with wax or some no-wax floors, the sheen may be removed by the heat and steam action. It is always recommended to test an isolated area of the surface to be cleaned before proceeding. We also recommend that you check the use  nd care instructions from the floor or surface manufacturer.
  • Never put de-scaling, aromatic, alcoholic or detergent products into the steam cleaner, as this may damage it or make it unsafe for use.
  • If the circuit breaker activates while using the steam function, discontinue product use immediately and contact the customer support center. (Beware of the risk of electrical shock.)
  • The appliance emits very hot steam to sanitize the area of use. This means that the steam floor head and cleaning pads get very hot during use.
  • Always wear suitable shoes when using your steam cleaner and when changing the accessories on your steam cleaner. Do not wear slippers or open-toed footwear.
  • Steam may escape from the appliance during use.
  • Care should be taken when using this appliance. DO NOT touch any parts which may become hot during use.

AFTER USE

  • Unplug the appliance and allow to cool.
  • When not in use, the appliance should be stored in a dry place.
  • Children should not have access to stored appliances.

INSPECTION AND REPAIRS

  • Unplug the appliance and allow to cool down before performing any maintenance or repairs.
  • Before use, check the appliance for damaged or defective parts. Check for breakage of parts, damage to switches and any other conditions that may affect its operation.
  • Regularly check the power cord for damage.
  • Do not use the appliance if any part is damaged or defective.
  • Have any damaged or defective parts repaired or replaced by an authorized repair agent.
  • Never attempt to remove or replace any parts other than those specified in this manual.

SAFETY OF OTHERS

  • This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they  ave been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
  • Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

Residual risks

Additional residual risks may arise when using the tool which may not be included in the enclosed safety warnings. These risks can arise from misuse, prolonged use, etc. Even  ith the application of the relevant safety regulations and the implementation of safety devices, certain residual risks can not be avoided. These include:

  • Injuries caused by touching any moving parts.
  • Injuries caused by touching any hot parts.
  • Injuries caused when changing any parts or accessories.
  • Injuries caused by prolonged use of the appliance. When using any appliance for prolonged periods ensure you take regular breaks.

SAFETY WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS: POLARIZED PLUGS
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this equipment has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This equipment must be used with a suitable polarized 2 wire or 3 wire extension cord. Polarized connections will fit together only one way. Make sure that the receptacle end of the extension cord has large and small blade slot widths. If the  lug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, obtain a suitable extension cord. If the extension cord does not fit fully into the outlet,  Contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the tool plug or extension cord in any way.

WARNING: Never modify the product or any part of i Damage or personal injury could result.

  • An extension cord must have adequate wire size (AWG or American Wire Gauge) for safety. The smaller the gauge number of the wire, the greater the capacity of the cable,  hat is, 16 gauge has more capacity than 18 gauge. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. When using more than one  xtension to make up the total length, be sure each individual extension contains at least the minimum wire size. The following table shows the correct size to use depending on  ord length and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The lower the gauge number, the heavier the cord.

WARNING: Before attempting any of the following operations, make sure that the appliance is switched off and unplugged and that the appliance is cold and contains minimal or no water.

ASSEMBLY AND ADJUSTMENTS

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn unit off and disconnect it from power source before making any adjustments or removing/installing attachments  r accessories.
An accidental start-up can cause injury.
Attaching the Floor Extension to the Floor Cleaning Head (Fig. B)

  1. Push the floor extension 7 into the floor cleaning head 8 making sure it clicks securely into place, as shown in Fig. B.
    NOTE: The cross section of the floor extension is more rounded on one side and will only insert in one orientation into the floor cleaning head. Ensure that both spring
    loaded pins on the floor extension are fully engaged in the holes on the floor cleaning head.

Attaching and Removing the Hand Held Steam Unit to and from the Floor Extension (Fig. C)
WARNING: Inspect the seal between the connection point on the hand held steam unit 3 and the floor extrension 7 before each use. If the seal malfunctions or is damaged,  lease contact your nearest authorized repair agent. Do not use the appliance.

  1. To attach, push the hand held steam unit 3 firmly onto the floor extension 7 making sure it sits  orrectly over the interface and clicks securely into place.
    NOTE: Floor extension is keyed and will only insert into hand held steam unit in one orientation.

  2. To remove, push  he floor extension release button 6 onthe floor extension 7 and lift the hand held steam unit 3 off the interface.

Attaching a Cleaning Pad (Fig. D)
Replacement cleaning pads are available from your local BLACK+DECKER dealer :- (cat no. SMP20).

CAUTION: Never leave the floor cleaning head in one spot on any surface for any period of time. Always place the hand held steam unit with attached floor extension and  loor cleaning head supported in the upright position when stationary and make sure the hand held steam unit is turned off when not in use.

  1. Place a cleaning pad 24 on the floor with the loop side facing up.
  2. Lightly press the floor cleaning head down onto the cleaning pad.

Removing a Cleaning Pad (Fig. D)
CAUTION:
Always wear suitable shoes when changing the cleaning pad on your floor cleaning head.
CAUTION: Never leave the floor cleaning head in one spot on any surface for any period of time.

  1. Do not wear slippers or open toed footwear.
  2. Return the hand held steam unit with attached floor extension and floor cleaning head to the upright position and turn the hand held steam unit OFF.
  3. Wait until the hand held steam unit cools down for approximately five minutes.
  4. Lift the floor cleaning head away from the cleaning pad 24 freeing it from the hook and loop fastening by putting weight on the cleaning pad removal tab 25 with your  hoe.
  5. Always place the hand held steam unit with attached floor extension and floor cleaning head supported in the upright position when stationary and make sure the hand held  team unit is turned off when not in use.

Filling the Water Tank (Fig. E)
WARNING:
When filling, maintain the water tank 5 in a vertical position with the cap at the top.
WARNING: Your water tank has a 17 fl oz (0.5 liter) capacity. Do not over fill the tank.
NOTE: Do not use chemical cleaners with your hand held steam unit water tank.
NOTE: Fill the water tank with clean tap water.
NOTE: In areas of hard water, the use of distilled water is recommended.
NOTE: Ensure the filler cap is firmly secured.
NOTE: Always empty the water tank after use.
1. Open the filler cap 4 by flipping it up.
2. Fill the water tank 5 with water. Do not use any additives or chemicals.
3. Close the filler cap 4 securely.

OPERATION

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn unit off and disconnect it from power source before making any adjustments or removing/installing  ttachments  r accessories.
An accidental start-up can cause injury.
CAUTION: Never use the floor cleaning head without first attaching a cleaning pad.
IMPORTANT: This unit will kill 99.9% of germs when used in accordance with the instructions in this manual and with the micro-fiber pad fitted and a continuous run time of 90 seconds.
CAUTION: Never leave the floor cleaning head in one spot on any surface for any period of time.
CAUTION: Do not store with a wet pad as this can damage your floor.
CAUTION: Always place the hand held steam unit with attached floor extension  7  and floor cleaning head  8  supported in the upright position when stationary and make  ure the hand held steam unit is turned OFF and unplugged when not in use.
CAUTION: Always empty the water tank after use.
NOTICE: Do not use on any unsealed hard floor surfaces. Additionally, on surfaces that have been treated with wax or some no wax floors, the sheen may be removed by the  eat and steam action. It is always recommended to test an isolated area of the surface to be cleaned before proceeding. We also recommend that you check the use and care  nstructions from the floor manufacturer.

Switching On/Off (Fig. F)
NOTE: When first filled or after running dry, it can take up to 45 seconds for steam to be produced.

  1. To switch the appliance on, press the ON/Off switch 1 so that the “i” is in the down position. It takes approximately thirty seconds for the boiler to heat up to operating temperature..

  2. Once the boiler is at operating temperature, press one of the steam flow buttons 28 or 29 to produce steam.  To switch the appliance off, press the ON/Off switch 1 so
    that the “ O ” is in the down position.

  3. Always place the hand held steam unit with attached floor extension and floor cleaning head supported in the upright position when stationary and make sure the hand held steam unit IS turned off when not in use.

Steam User Interface (Fig. K)
This hand held steam unit is fitted with a steam user interface 2 which shows two steam settings. They are used to select the correct operating mode for your particular cleaning  operation.

  1. Turn Unit on with On/Off switch.
    – The boiler LED 27 starts flashing green as the boiler heats up.
    – The LED stays solid green once the boiler is up to operating temperature.

  2. User must press either the low steam flow 28 or high steam flow 29 button to create steam.
    – The steam flow LED 35 will illuminate white to show which steam setting is being used.
    – Press the steam flow button 28 or 29 again to pause the steam flow and white steam flow LED 35 will turn off.
    NOTE: Always check you are using the correct setting before using your hand held steam unit.

  3. To switch the appliance off, press the ON/Off switch 1 so  that the “O” is in the down position.
    NOTE: See the chart below for more details on the steam user interace.

Attaching and Removing Small Countertop Mop Head (Fig. G)

  1. Push the small countertop mop head 10 into the hand held steam unit 3 making sure it clicks securely into place, as shown in Fig. G.
    NOTE: Small countertop mop head is keyed and will only insert into hand held steam unit in one orientation.

  2. To remove, push the small countertop mop head release button 11 on the small countertop mop head 10 and remove from the hand held steam unit.

Attaching a Cleaning Pad to the Small Countertop Mop Head (Fig. H)
CAUTION: Never leave the small countertop mop head in one spot on any surface for any period of time. Always place the small countertop mop head supported in the  pright position when stationary and make sure the hand held steam unit is turned off when not in use.
Replacement cleaning pads are available from your BLACK+DECKER dealer :- (cat no. SMP60).

  1. Place a small countertop cleaning pad 26 on the countertop with the loop side facing up.
  2. Lightly press the small countertop mop head 10 down onto the cleaning pad.

Attaching the Adaptor and Accessories to the Hand Held Steam Unit
WARNING: Inspect the seal between the connection point where the accessory attaches to the adaptor 9 before each use. If the seal malfunctions or is damaged, please contact your nearest authorized repair agent. Do not use the appliance.
Attaching the Adaptor (Fig. I)
WARNING:
The unit should be switched OFF before the adaptor is fitted.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the adaptor 9 is securely connected to the hand held steam unit. If steam escapes from the joint, the adaptor is incorrectly fitted. Switch OFF, and  llow the unit to cool down for approximately five minutes, then remove and refit.

  1. Press the adaptor release button 30 on the adaptor 9 .
  2. Connect the adaptor 9 to the hand held steam unit 3 and release the adaptor release button ensuring it clicks into place.
    NOTE: The adapter is keyed and will only insert into hand held steam unit in one orientation..

Attaching Accessories 12 –15 (Fig. I)
IMPORTANT:
All accessories must be attached to the adaptor 9 for use.

  1. Align the lugs 31 on the adaptor 9 with the recesses 32 on the accessory.
  2. Press the accessory onto the steam nozzle 33 and twist counterclockwise as viewed from the hand held steam unit until the accessory clicks securely into place.

Removing an Accessory (Fig. I)
WARNING: Allow the unit and all accessories to cool for approximately five minutes before attempting to remove.

  1. Twist the accessory clockwise as viewed from the hand held steam unit then pull away from the adaptor 9 .

Removing the Adaptor (Fig. I)
WARNING: Allow the unit and all accessories to cool for approximately five minutes before attempting to remove.

  1. Press the adaptor release button 30 on the  daptor 9 and pull away from the hand held steam unit 3 .

Steam Cleaning with the Small Countertop Mop Head (Fig. H)

  1. Fit the small countertop mop head 10 to the hand held steam cleaner 3 .

  2. Place cleaning pad 26 onto the countertop with loop side facing up.

  3. Lightly press the counter top floorhead onto the cleaning pad 26 .

  4. Connect hand held steam unit to an outlet.

  5. Press the On/Off button 1 so that the “i” is in the down position.
    NOTE: It takes approximately thirty seconds for the boiler to heat up to operating temperature.

  6. Once boiler is at operating temperature, press the required steam setting button 28 or 29 to start the steam flow.

  7. It takes a few seconds for steam to enter the cleaning pad. The cleaning pad will now glide easily over the surface to be cleaned.

  8. When you have finished using the hand held steam unit, press the steam flow button 28 or 29 to stop steam flow, and press the ON/Off switch 1 so that the “O” is in the down position.

  9. Wait until the hand held steam unit cools down for approximately five minutes.

Steam Cleaning with the Floor Cleaning Head
CAUTION: It is important to monitor the water level inthe water tank. To refill the water tank and continue tosanitize/clean, turn the hand held steam unit OFF and
allow to cool before filling with water.
CAUTION: Never leave the floor cleaning head or smallcountertop mop head in one spot on any surface for any period of time. Make sure the hand held steam unitis turned off when not in use.
NOTE: When first filled or after running dry, it can take up to 45 seconds for steam to be produced.

  1. Fit hand held steam unit 3 to the floor extension 7 and floor cleaning head 8 to the floor extension 7 .

  2. Place a cleaning pad 24 on the floor with the loop side facing up.

  3. Lightly press the floor cleaning head 8 down onto the cleaning pad 24 .

  4. Connect the hand held steam unit to an outlet.

  5.  Press the On/Off button 1 so that the “i” is in the down position.
    NOTE: It takes approximately thirty seconds for the boiler to heat up to operating temperature.

  6. Once boiler is at operating temperature, press the requiredsteam flow button 28 or 29 to start the steam flow.

  7. It takes a few seconds for steam to enter the cleaning pad. The cleaning pad will now glide easily over the surface to be cleaned.

  8. Push and pull the mop head slowly across the surface to thoroughly steam clean each section.

  9. If water tank 5 requires filling, press the steam flow button 28 or 29 to pause steam flow, return to an upright position, making sure that the steam cleaning system is  upported and turn OFF.

  10. Wait until the hand held steam unit cools down for approximately five minutes.

  11. Unplug the unit from the electrical wall outlet, and refill the water tank 5 .

After use

  1. Wait until the hand held steam unit cools down for approximately five minutes
  2. Unplug the hand held steam unit from the electrical wall outlet.
  3. Empty the water tank 5.
  4. Remove the cleaning pad 24 and wash it so that it is ready for next use.
    NOTE: Follow the wash care instructions printed on the cleaning pad.

Hints for Optimum Use General

CAUTION: Never use the floor cleaning head or the small countertop mop head without first attaching a cleaning pad.

  1. Always vacuum or sweep the floor or countertop before using the hand held steam unit.
  2. The easiest way to use the appliance is to tilt the unit to a 45º angle and clean slowly, covering a small area at a time.
  3. Do not use chemical cleaners with your steam cleaning system. To remove stubborn stains from vinyl or linoleum floors and countertops, you can pre-treat them with a  Mild  detergent and some water before using the steam mop.

MAINTENANCE

Your BLACK+DECKER appliance has been designed to operate over a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation depends upon proper care and regular cleaning.
WARNING: Before performing any maintenance or cleaning on corded appliances switch off and unplug the appliance.

  • Clean your appliance using a soft cloth dampened with water. Never let any liquid get inside the appliance; never immerse any part of the appliance into a liquid.
    IMPORTANT: To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, maintenance and adjustment should be performed by authorized service centers or other qualified service organizations, always using identical replacement parts.

  • For stubborn marks you can use a mild solution of soap and water to dampen your cloth. Never use any other cleansers or any solvents.

Care of the Cleaning Pads
CAUTION: Follow the cleaning instructions printed on the label of your cleaning pad.
Wash care instructions
Machine wash warm 140 °F (60 °C) – No bleach – No fabric softener – Air dry only – Allow to dry fully before re-use.

Cleaning

WARNING: Never use solvents or other harsh chemicals for cleaning the non-metallic parts of the appliance. These chemicals may weaken the plastic materials used in these parts. Use a cloth dampened only with water and mild soap. Never let any liquid get inside the appliance; never immerse any part of the appliance into a liquid.

Accessories

WARNING: Since accessories, other than those offered by BLACK+DECKER, have not been tested with this appliance, use of such accessories with this appliance could be hazardous. To reduce the risk of injury, only BLACK+DECKER recommended accessories should be used with this appliance.

Steam cleaning accessories

Garment steam cleaning (Fig. J)
(Available with BhsM15FX10)
NOTE: When first filled or after running dry, it can take up to 45 seconds for steam to be produced.

  1. Fit the garment steamer sock 18 to the garment steamer attachment 17 .

  2. Align the lugs 31 on the adaptor 9 with the recesses 32 on the garment steamer attachment 17 .

  3. Press the garment steamer attachment 17 onto the steam nozzle 33 and twist counterclockwise as viewed from the hand held steam unit until the accessory clicks securely  into place.

  4. Connect the hand held steam unit to an outlet.

  5. Press the On/Off button 1 so that the “i” is in the down position.
    NOTE: It takes approximately thirty seconds for the boiler to heat up to operating temperature.

  6. Once boiler is at operating temperature, press the required steam flow button 28 or 29 to start the steam flow.

  7. When you have finished using the hand held steam unit, press the steam flow button 28 or 29 to pause steam flow, and turn OFF.

  8. Wait until the hand held steam unit cools down for approximately five minutes.

On pole storage (Fig. L)
(Available with BhsM15FX10)

  1. Clamp the on pole storage unit 23 onto the floor extension pole 7 .
  2. The adaptor 9 can be stored in the opening in the top of the on pole storage unit, as shown in Fig. L.
  3. The bottom protrusion 34 of the on pole storage unit 23 can be used to store individual
    attachments  12 ,  13 ,  14 ,  15 or 17 .

Wall storage (Fig. M)
(Available with BhsM15FX10)

The wall storage unit 19 comes in three pieces:

  1. Wall bracket 20 which is screwed into the wall.
  2. Storage hook 21 which is clipped onto the wall bracket and allows you to hang the cable tidily.
  3. Storage box with lid 22 . This slides into place on the wall bracket via the rail system provided. Any accessories not being stored on the pole storage unit can be stored in here.

WARNING: To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, maintenance and adjustment (including power cord repairs, and brush inspection and replacement, when applicable) should be performed by a BLACK+DECKER factory service center or a BLACK+DECKER authorized service center. Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. warranties this product to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of two (2) years following the date of purchase, provided that the product is used in a home environment. This limited warranty does not cover failures due to abuse, accidental damage or when repairs have been made or attempted by  nyone other than BLACK+DECKER and its Authorized Service Centers. A defective product meeting the warranty conditions set forth herein will be replaced or repaired at  o charge in either of two ways:
The first, which will result in exchanges only, is to return the product to the retailer from whom it was purchased (provided that the store is a participating retailer). Returns should be made within the time period of the retailer’s policy for exchanges. Proof of purchase may be required. Please check with the retailer for its specific return policy  egarding time limits for returns or exchanges. The second option is to take or send the product (prepaid) to a BLACK+DECKER owned or authorized Service Center for  epair  r replacement at BLACK+DECKER’s option. Proof of purchase may be wned and authorized service centers are listed online at  w.blackanddecker.com. This warranty does not apply to accessories. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights which vary from state to state or rovince to province. The unit is not turning ON. 1. Check the unit is plugged in at the wall

socket.
The unit is not turning ON.| 2.| Check the unit is switched ON using the ON/OFF switch.
The unit is not producing steam.| 1.| Check the water tank is full .
NOTE: When first filled or after running dry it can take up to burly five seconds for steam to be produced.
2.| Check the steam operate button is in the ON position.
3.| The unit is equipped with a thermostat and a thermal cut-out. If for any reason the unit overheats it will
switch off. If this happens turn off and unplug the unit, allow to cool for 2 to 4 hours and re-try.
| 4.| Check the steam flow button has been pressed and the white LED is illumintated.
