Troy Lee Designs A3 MIPS Helmet
INSTRUCTION
THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING THE TROY LEE DESIGNS “TLD” A3 HELMET: ONE OF THE MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED, LIGHTWEIGHT TRAIL HELMETS ON THE PLANET.
ADVANCING HELMET SAFETY HAS ALWAYS BEEN AND CONTINUES TO BE A TOP PRIORITY AT
TROY LEE DESIGNS. THE A3 HELMET IS NO EXCEPTION. THE A3 HELMET HAS A STATE-OF-
THE-ART CO-MOLDED EPS AND EPP PATENT PENDING IMPACT LINER. COMBINING EPS WITH
EPP IN THE LINER AND PAIRING IT WITH MIPS (MULTI-DIRECTIONAL IMPACT PROTECTION
SYSTEM) TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES BETTER ENERGY MANAGEMENT DURING LOW, MID AND HIGH-
SPEED IMPACTS; AND MAY REDUCE ROTATIONAL FORCES TRANSFERRED TO A RIDER’S BRAIN
DURING CERTAIN IMPACTS. BOTTOM LINE, TROY LEE DESIGNS AND THE A3 HELMET HAVE
RAISED THE BAR EVEN HIGHER WHEN IT COMES TO RIDER SAFETY.
YOU CAN RIDE WITH CONFIDENCE KNOWING THE A3 HAS BEEN VALIDATED BY WEEKEND
WARRIORS, TOP PROFESSIONALS AND ALL RIDERS IN BETWEEN AS ONE OF THE SAFEST,
MOST TECHNICALLY ADVANCED AND FUNCTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL, LIGHTWEIGHT TRAIL
HELMETS. THANKS AGAIN FOR CHOOSING THE A3. PEACE AND WHEELIES!
TO ENSURE YOU GET THE MOST FROM YOUR INVESTMENT, AND TO GUARANTEE YEARS OF USE FROM THIS QUALITY TROY LEE DESIGNS PRODUCT, PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MANUAL CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THIS BICYCLE HELMET. IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT WARNINGS, SAFETY INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING SAFE AND PROPER USE OF THE HELMET. DO NOT DISCARD THIS MANUAL. THIS MANUAL SHOULD ALWAYS ACCOMPANY THIS HELMET. YOU SHOULD NOT USE YOUR TLD A3 HELMET UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND FULLY UNDERSTAND THE CONTENTS OF THIS MANUAL.
THIS HELMET IS DESIGNED TO PROTECT AGAINST IMPACT CAUSED BY COLLISION OF THE
HEAD WITH AN OBSTACLE WHILE CYCLING, IT HAS PASSED EN1078:2012+A1:2012 TO SHOW
CONFORMITY TO THE EHSR OF REGULATION (EU) 2016/425. ALSO COMPLIES WITH THE
SAFETY STANDARDS FOR BICYCLE HELMETS FOR CPSC 16 CFR 1203.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS CONCERNING THE A3, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR
NEAREST TROY LEE DESIGNS DEALER, CALL TLD CUSTOMER SERVICE AT
951-371-5219 OR VISIT
WWW.TROYLEEDESIGNS.COM/COMPANY/CONTACT-US. PLEASE NOTE, THAT THESE
SPECIFICATIONS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE AS WE ARE CONTINUALLY
IMPROVING OUR HELMETS.
TO DETERMINE THE BEST SIZE
THE HELMET CAN ONLY PROTECT IF IT FITS WELL SO THE USER SHOULD TRY DIFFERENT SIZES AND CHOOSE THE SIZE WHICH FEELS THE MOST SECURE AND COMFORTABLE ON THE HEAD. MEASURE YOUR HEAD SIZE. WRAP A TAPE MEASURE HORIZONTALLY AROUND YOUR HEAD AT A HEIGHT OF ABOUT 1 INCH (2.54 CM) ABOVE YOUR EYEBROWS AND EVEN WITH THE TOPS OF YOUR EARS TO OBTAIN THE LARGEST HEAD MEASUREMENT.
-
ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET ABOUT 1 INCH (2.54 CM) ABOVE YOUR BROW TO PROTECT YOUR FOREHEAD; HELMET SHOULD BE IN A LEVEL POSITION ACROSS YOUR FOREHEAD AND EARS, LEFT TO RIGHT AND FRONT TO BACK.
-
HELMET SHOULD NOT BE WORN TILTED BACK EXPOSING YOUR FOREHEAD. STRAP SHOULD NOT BE LOOSE AND OUT FROM UNDER YOUR CHIN.
-
ADJUSTABLE SIDE STRAP ALLOWS SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT TO REMOVE SLACK IN THE FRONT OR BACK STRAP LENGTHS. DEPENDING WHERE THE SLACK IS THIS MIGHT EFFECT WHERE THE CHINSTRAP LANDS UNDER YOUR CHIN AND LOCATION OF THE STRAP ACROSS THE SIDE OF YOUR FACE. A WELL-ADJUSTED STRAP SHOULD BE TAUGHT ON FRONT AND BACK AND LAND IN A CENTERED AND COMFORTABLE LOCATION UNDERNEATH YOUR CHIN.
-
TO LOOSEN/ADD LENGTH TO FRONT STRAP AND REMOVE EXTRA STRAP SLACK AT THE REAR, FEED REAR STRAP THROUGH SIDE STRAP DIVIDER HOLE AND PULL THROUGH BACK SIDE FEEDING STRAP UP AND INTO THE FRONT STRAP HOLE, INCREASING THE FRONT STRAP LENGTH. TO LENGTHEN REAR STRAP OR REMOVE SLACK IN THE FRONT, REVERSE STRAP FEED PROCESS.
-
FIDLOCK HELMET BUCKLE
- REMOVAL: SLIDE FORWARD TO UNCLASP THE MAGNETIC FIDLOCK BUCKLE (FIG.A)
- LOCKING: SLIDE BACKWARD INTO THE GROOVE (FIG.B) OR PLACE THE UPPER AND LOWER BUCKLES ABOVE EACH OTHER (FIG.C). FIDLOCK IS MAGNETIC AND WILL AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGE. YOU WILL HEAR A CLICK NOISE WHEN BUCKLE IS SECURE.
-
ADJUST CHIN STRAP TIGHTNESS BY FEEDING STRAP THROUGH PULLING AT OPPOSITE END. WRAP EXCESS STRAP UNDER RUBBER GROMMET. NOT SECURING THE LOOSE ENDS WITH THE RUBBER GROMMET CAN RESULT IN THE HELMET COMING OFF ACCIDENTALLY.
-
TWIST STABILIZER WHEEL (AT REAR OF HELMET) CLOCKWISE TO TIGHTEN AGAINST THE BACK OF THE HEAD. TIGHTEN UNTIL HELMET FITS SNUG AND SECURELY. TWIST STABILIZER WHEEL COUNTER-CLOCKWISE TO LOOSEN TENSION AGAINST BACK OF HEAD TO REMOVE HELMET.
-
ADJUST STABILIZERS REACH ON BACK OF HEAD BY GENTLY PULLING OUT END OF ARM PROTRUDING INTO HELMET SHELL. LOCATE THE END OF THE STABILIZER BALL MOUNT IN ONE OF THE THREE HOLES FOR DESIRED FIT. PUSH TO CLICK FOR SECURE MOUNTING.
-
INSTALL LINER USING SPECIFICALLY LOCATED VELCRO MOUNTING POINTS. LINER WILL STICK TO VELCRO AND HOLD LINER INTO POSITION. INSERT LINER INTO SHELL BY STARTING AT THE FRONT OF THE FOREHEAD, SECURING THE LINER TO VELCRO MOUNTS AS YOU WORK TO THE BACK OF THE HELMET.
-
REMOVE BOTH PLASTIC BOLTS AS SHOWN IN FIG.10 TO REMOVE VISOR.
-
3 POSITION VISOR ADJUSTMENT: WITH BOTH SIDE BOLTS AND WASHERS INSTALLED, ADJUST VISOR HEIGHT BY LIGHTLY PUSHING UP OR DOWN UNTIL THE VISOR CLICKS INTO ON OF THE THREE (3) POSITIONS AS SHOWN IN FIG.11.
-
OPTIONAL GOGGLE STOWAGE POSITION: LIGHTLY PUSH THE VISOR UP PAST THE LAST DETENT TO ALLOW ROOM FOR STOWAGE.
CHECK THE FIT: BEFORE USING THE HELMET, MAKE SURE THAT IT FITS CORRECTLY, IT IS POSITIONED TO COVER YOUR ENTIRE FOREHEAD, THE STRAPS ARE CORRECTLY ADJUSTED, AND THE CHIN STRAP IS TIGHT. GRAB THE HELMET WITH BOTH HANDS AND TWIST IT TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. IF THE HELMET FITS CORRECTLY, THE SKIN ON YOUR FOREHEAD WILL MOVE AS THE HELMET MOVES. IF THE SKIN ON YOUR FOREHEAD DOES NOT MOVE, THE HELMET IS TOO LOOSE.- CHECK THE STRAPS: WITH THE HELMET ON AND THE CHIN STRAP BUCKLED, GRAB THE HELMET WITH BOTH HANDS AND TRY TO REMOVE IT BY ROLLING THE HELMET FORWARD AND BACKWARD AS FAR AS YOU CAN. MAKE A SERIOUS EFFORT. IF YOU CAN ROLL/PUSH THE HELMET OFF THE HEAD COMPLETELY IN EITHER DIRECTION OR ROLL IT FORWARD SO FAR THAT IT BLOCKS VISION OR BACKWARDS SO FAR THAT IT EXPOSES THE FOREHEAD, YOUR HELMET DOES NOT FIT CORRECTLY. REPEAT STEPS ABOVE UNTIL HELMET MOVEMENT IS MINIMAL.
- TEST RIDE: ONCE YOU ARE SATISFIED THAT THE HELMET FITS CORRECTLY AND THAT ALL STRAPS ARE PROPERLY ADJUSTED, TIGHTENED, AND SECURED, TAKE A SHORT BICYCLE RIDE IN A AREA FREE FROM TRAFFIC AND OTHER HAZARDS. PAY ATTENTION TO OVERALL COMFORT AND STABILITY WHILE RIDING. MAKE MINOR ADJUSTMENTS TO THE FIT PADS AND STRAPS TO IMPROVE COMFORT AND STABILITY. DO NOT MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS TO THE HELMET WHILE RIDING AS THIS COULD CAUSE YOU TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE BIKE OR CAUSE THE HELMET TO FALL OFF AND BECOME DAMAGED OR ENTANGLED IN YOUR WHEELS CAUSING A CRASH.
WARNING
BICYCLE HELMET—NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN MOTOR SPORTS OR BY MOTORCYCLISTS.
NO HELMET CAN PROTECT AGAINST ALL POSSIBLE IMPACTS AND SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH
COULD OCCUR. SOME HEAD INJURIES CANNOT BE PREVENTED BY THIS HELMET AND THIS
HELMET CAN ONLY ATTEMPT TO PROTECT AREAS IT COVERS SO FACIAL AND NECK INJURIES
CANNOT BE PREVENTED WITH THIS HELMET. DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF IMPACT EVEN A
VERY LOW SPEED ACCIDENT CAN RESULT IN A SERIOUS HEAD INJURY OR FATALITY.
WARNING! THIS HELMET SHOULD NOT BE USED BY CHILDREN WHILE CLIMBING OR DOING
OTHER ACTIVITIES WHEN THERE IS A RISK OF STRANGULATION/HANGING IF THE CHILD
GETS TRAPPED WITH THE HELMET. A HELMET IS NOT A TOY. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR SMALL
CHILDREN TO PLAY WITH YOUR HELMET. THEY CAN ACCIDENTALLY DAMAGE IT OR HURT
THEMSELVES. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT THEY COULD CHOKE ON THE BUCKLES ON THE
STRAPS.
THE HELMET MAY BE DAMAGED AND RENDERED INEFFECTIVE BY SUBSTANCES SUCH AS
PETROL [GASOLINE], SOLVENTS, HYDROCARBONS, TRANSFERS OR OTHER EXTRANEOUS
ADDITIONS, PAINT, ADHESIVES, CLEANING AGENTS AS WELL AS PROLONGED SUNLIGHT OR
EXCESSIVE HEAT. THIS DAMAGE MAY NOT BE VISIBLE TO THE USER. STORE YOUR HELMET
IN A COOL, DRY PLACE. DO NOT ALLOW ANY HEAT SOURCE TO COME NEAR YOUR HELMET AT
ANY TIME. NO ATTACHMENTS OR MODIFICATION SHOULD BE MADE TO THE HELMET EXCEPT
THOSE RECOMMENDED BY TROY LEE DESIGNS. ONLY USE REPLACEMENT PARTS FROM TROY
LEE DESIGNS. MODIFYING OR REMOVING ANY OF THE ORIGINAL COMPONENT PARTS OF THE
HELMET OTHER THAN AS RECOMMENDED BY TROY LEE DESIGNS CAN CAUSE THE HELMET TO
LOOSE ITS PROTECTIVE EFFECTIVENESS. THIS HELMET SHOULD NOT BE ADAPTED FOR THE
PURPOSE OF FITTING ACCESSORIES IN A WAY NOT RECOMMENDED BY TROY LEE DESIGNS.
THE HELMET IS DESIGNED TO BE RETAINED BY A STRAP UNDER THE LOWER JAW. FOR
MAXIMUM PROTECTION THE HELMET MUST BE FITTED AND ATTACHED PROPERLY TO THE
WEARER’S HEAD IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE USERS MANUAL. THIS HELMET CAN ONLY
PROTECT IF IT FITS WELL. TRY DIFFERENT SIZES AND CHOOSE THE SIZE WHICH FEELS
MOST SECURE AND COMFORTABLE ON THE HEAD. SECURELY FASTEN RETENTION SYSTEM.
GRASP THE HELMET AND TRY TO ROTATE IT TO THE FRONT AND REAR. A CORRECTLY
FITTED HELMET SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE AND SHOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD TO OBSCURE
VISION OR REARWARD TO EXPOSE THE FOREHEAD. NEVER WEAR YOUR HELMET WITH THE
BUCKLE UNFASTENED.
HELMET ADJUSTMENT CAN CHANGE DURING RIDING OR STORAGE. CHECK THE HELMET FOR
PROPER ADJUSTMENT AND FIT PRIOR TO EACH AND EVERY BICYCLE RIDE.
DO NOT WEAR ANYTHING (SCARF, BANDANA, WINTER CAP, HAIR CLIP, ETC.) UNDER YOUR
HELMET AS ANYTHING UNDER THE HELMET, INCLUDING LONG HAIR WORN UP, MAY INCREASE
THE LIKELIHOOD OF YOUR HELMET COMING OFF DURING AN ACCIDENT OR MAY OTHERWISE
INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF BRAIN OR OTHER INJURY AND OR MAY OTHERWISE REDUCE
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE HELMET.
THE HELMET IS DESIGNED TO ABSORB SHOCK BY PARTIAL DESTRUCTION OF THE SHELL AND
LINER (SEE DIAGRAM ON PREVIOUS PAGE). THIS DAMAGE MAY NOT BE VISIBLE.
THEREFORE, IF SUBJECTED TO A SEVERE BLOW, THE HELMET SHOULD BE DESTROYED AND
REPLACED EVEN IF IT APPEARS UNDAMAGED, OR RETURN IT TO
WWW.TROYLEEDESIGNS.
COM. IF HELMET SHOWS SIGNS OF DAMAGE, DESTROY AND REPLACE IT. INSPECT YOUR
HELMET FOR WEAR OR DAMAGE (SUCH AS CRACKS IN THE EPS AS SEEN FROM INSIDE THE
HELMET OR DENTS ON THE SURFACE) PRIOR TO EVERY RIDE. NEVER USE A DAMAGED
HELMET.
A HELMET HAS A LIMITED LIFESPAN IN USE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED WHEN IT SHOWS
OBVIOUS SIGNS OF WEAR. BICYCLE HELMETS ARE CONSTRUCTED OF MATERIALS THAT
DETERIORATE WITH AGE SO THEIR PROTECTIVE CAPABILITIES MAY LESSEN OVER TIME.
THIS HELMET SHOULD BE REPLACED WITHIN 5 YEARS OF THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE
STAMPED IN THIS HELMET REGARDLESS OF USE OR CONDITION.
NEVER TAKE UNNECESSARY RISKS SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU ARE WEARING A HELMET OR FAIL
TO DO WHAT YOU CAN TO AVOID ACCIDENTS, SUCH AS FAILING TO KEEP YOUR BICYCLE IN
GOOD OPERATING CONDITION.
NEVER FAIL TO USE GOOD JUDGMENT WHILE RIDING OR FAIL TO FOLLOW ALL TRAFFIC
RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR ON ROAD RIDING AS WELL AS THE IMBA.COM “RULES OF THE
TRAIL” FOR OFF ROAD RIDING.
READ OWNERS MANUAL BEFORE USING THIS HELMET. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN OWNER’S

STORING YOUR HELMET
AFTER EACH USE, ALLOW THE HELMET TO AIR DRY AND THEN STORE IN A COOL, DRY
PLACE. IT IS BEST TO HANG IT FROM ITS STRAPS. DO NOT HANG IT ON YOUR BIKE OR
HANDLEBARS OR STORE IT ANYWHERE ELSE WHERE IT COULD BE BUMPED OR FALL ONTO A
HARD SURFACE AS THIS COULD CRACK IT OR OTHERWISE DAMAGE IT.
WARNING!
HEAT DAMAGE EXCESSIVE HEAT CAN PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE HELMET. DIRECT
SUNLIGHT, DARK GEAR BAGS, AND AUTOMOBILE TRUNKS CAN GET HOT ENOUGH TO CAUSE
HEAT DAMAGE.
