A Little Bit of History
The EMD F3 is a 1,500-horsepower (1,100 kW) B-B freight- and passenger-hauling
carbody diesel locomotive produced between July 1945 and February 1949 by
General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division. The final assembly was at GM-EMD’s La
Grange, Illinois plant. A total of 1,111 cab-equipped lead A units and 696
cabless booster B units were built.
The F3 was the third model in GM-EMD’s highly successful F-unit series of cab
unit diesel locomotives, and it was the second most-produced of the series.
The F3 essentially differed from the EMD F2 in that it used the “new” D12
generator to produce more power and from the later EMD F7 in electrical
equipment. Some late-model F3s had the same D27 traction motors, along with
the heavier-duty electrical cables, used in the F7, and were referred to as
model F5 by EMD’s Engineering Department.
See Wikipedia, EMD F3, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_F3 (describing the
history of the EMD F3) (as of Jan. 26, 2022, 18:52 GMT).

How to Drive
The EMD F3 is easy to drive. Once in-game, the engine is ON by default. To start moving it do the following steps:
- Set the Reverser forwards or backward.
- Release both, the Loco brake and Train brake.
- Move up the Throttle. Depending on the consist it might need more power to move the train.
- Use brake levers to stop the train. Loco brake if you are operating a light engine. Train brake or Dynamic brake if you are operating a consist.
To operate the train with simple controls is even easier. You only have to worry about two controls. Reverser button and Throttle/brake lever. Reverser is usually set to forwards and can be changed with a single click on it. To move the train just move up the Throttle/Brake lever from the brake area, the bottom half, to the power area, the top half. Move it down to the brake area to stop the train.
Included Career Scenarios
All included scenarios are for Wahsatch Grade Route
01 – Tanker Train to Ogden
Your job today is to take this empty tanker train from Morgan to Ogden. The
weather couldn’t be better and the traffic is normal. No problems expected.
Grab your mug of coffee and enjoy the landscape. Just pay attention to the
junction at Ogden. Have a nice trip!
02 – Eastbound Boxcars
Southern Pacific wants you to take this train of 30 boxcars eastbound from
Ogden to Devils Slide. The EMD F3 have more than enough power to climb the
grades and do the job as needed. There is not much traffic ahead and the
weather is nice. As always keep an eye on the speedometer and the other on the
track. Good luck!
03 – First Train of the Year
Sorry, you have to work tonight but trains never sleep. You have to take this
train from Devils Slide to Evanston. It is snowing but it is not that bad. Be
careful with the grades and keep an eye on the junctions at Evanston. You
might need extra coffee for this trip.
04 – Goodies to the West
Your task this evening is to take this manifest train from Evanston to Echo.
The rain doesn’t help to get down the gradients, so you will have to make good
use of the brakes to keep the train below the speed limits. Good luck and have
a safe trip.
