Grounding Instructions
This appliance must be grounded. If it should malfunction or breakdown,
grounding provides a path of least resistance for electrical current to reduce
the risk of electric shock. This appliance is equipped with a cord having an
equipment-grounding conductor (A) and grounding plug (B). The plug must be
plugged into an appropriate outlet (C) that is properly installed and grounded
in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
DANGER-
Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in the
risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or service person
if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. Do not
modify the plug provided with the appliance if it will not fit the outlet,
have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. This appliance is
for use on a nominal 120 volt circuit and has a grounding plug that looks like
the plug illustrated in Fig. 1.1.
A Temporary adapter (D) may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole
receptacle (E) if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The Temporary
adapter should be used only until a properly grounded outlet (C) can be
installed by a qualified electrician. The green colored rigid ear (F), lug, or
the like extending from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground
such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Whenever the adapter is used, it

INSTALLATION
Locationforpowercanister
The Utility Vac canister is to be mounted in the garage or other location not
exposed to weather or damp conditions. When choosing a location, consider both
the hose length and proximity to an electrical outlet. The unit requires
ventilation. DO NOT install in a heat producing or confined area such as an
attic, furnace room, etc. The top of the canister should be no less than 12″
(30.5 cm) from the ceiling and any corner wall to allow proper cooling of the
motor. For ease of removing the dust container, the bottom of the unit should
be at least 6″ (16 cm) above the floor.
DO NOT block the two small air inlet holes above the latch holder.
The top surface of the motor housing gets hot during operation, DO NOT place
or store any objects there.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD AN EXTENSION CORD BE USED WITH THIS
CANISTER.
Mountingthepower canister
-
Determine if the wall you will be mounting the canister to is block, concrete, or plaster/drywall.
-
Block or Concrete Wall You will need (2) 1-1/2″ (3.8 cm) x 1/4″ (.64 cm) lead plugs and (2) 1-1/2″ (3.8 cm) x 1/4″ (.64 cm) lag bolts. Drill a 1/2″ (1.3 cm) dia. x 1-3/4″ (4.4 cm) deep hole with a masonry drill bit. Insert a lead plug into the hole. Mount the bracket (Fig. 2-1) from a top hole with a lag bolt. Mark the other upper hole of the bracket. Make sure that the bracket is level. Slide the bracket away from the mark and drill a hole directly over the mark. Insert a lead plug into the hole. Align the bracket over the hole and tightly fasten with a lag bolt. Continue to step 4).
-
Drywall or Plaster Wall You will need(2) 1-1/2″ (3.8 cm) x 1/4″ (.64 cm) wood screws. Locate a stud and drill a 1/8″ (.32 cm) dia. x 1-3/4″ (4.4 cm) pilot hole. Mount the bracket from a top hole with a wood screw. Make sure that the bracket is level. Drill a second pilot hole using a lower hole on the bracket and fasten tightly with the other wood screw.
-
Mount the canister on the bracket making sure the bar on the back of the canister is settled to the bottom of the slots on the mounting bracket. The wall mounting bracket must fit between the two brackets on the back of the canister.
-
Hose rack (Drywall or plaster wall): Drill a 1/4″ (.64 cm) dia. x 1-1/4″ (3.18cm) pilot hole into a wall stud. Mount the hose rack using a screw through one eyelet. Make sure the rack is level. Drill a second pilot hole using the second eyelet on the rack. Insert the drywall anchor. Fasten with a screw.
Hose rack (block or concrete wall): Follow instructions in step 2) for fastening -
Plug the power cord in.
OPERATION
Lift the front valve cover and insert the hose into the valve as shown in Fig 3-1.
The Utility Vac is turned ON and OFF with the switch found on the upper left side of the motor module.
Selecting the proper tool
A. Dusting brush may be used for work benches, vehicle interiors, baseboards,
lighting fixtures, etc.
B. Furniture nozzle may be used for vehicle interiors, carpets, mattresses,
etc.
C. Crevice tools may be used in tight spaces, corners and along edges in such
places as vehicle interiors, drawers, upholstered furniture, etc.
D. Floor nozzle may be used to clean garage and basement floors and other-floor
surfaces. Use with wands.
E. Wands are used to give extra length to the hose. Use them with any of the
other tools.
Attaching wand and tools
Push a wand or tool firmly onto the end of the hose. Use the second wand to
extend the length if required and attach the appropriate tool. Twist tools and
wands slightly to loosen or tighten the connection.
Cleaning hose and tools
Wipe off dirt with a cloth dampened in mild detergent. Rinse with wet cloth
and allow to dry.
MAINTENANCE
Unplug the power cord from the outlet before removing the dirt container.
Under normal circumstances, the only maintenance your Utility Vac requires is
emptying the dirt container as required, and periodically cleaning the cloth
filter.
To empty the dirt container:
- Remove the container by lifting up on the latches on each side of the container and lifting them off the hooks. Do not let the bucket drop.
- Dump the contents into a trash can or garbage bag. Perform this step outdoors.
- Replace the dirt container, aligning the latches on the side hooks and lineup the container to the bottom seal. Secure the latches by pushing them downward.
To clean the filter:
-
Remove the container by lifting up on the latches on each side of the container and lifting them off the hooks.
Do not let the bucket drop. -
Place a plastic garbage bag over the main body below the filter and secure.
-
Using the plastic bag to keep your hand clean, shake the filter to cause dust particles to fall into the bag. (4-2) Discard the bag.
-
Replace the dirt container, aligning the latches on the side hooks and lineup the container to the bottom seal. Secure the latches by pushing them downward.
In severe conditions such as vacuuming drywall dust, etc., removing the filter and properly cleaning will ensure optimum performance of your Utility- Vac.
-
To remove the cloth filter, grasp the tab and pull towards the middle of the unit.
-
Take the filter to a trash bin and shake to remove dust particles. Perform this step outdoors.
-
To replace the cloth filter, you must decrease the circumference of the filter by pulling one side towards the center to create form the filter into the shape shown in 4-5.
-
Place the filter back into the unit and let the filter snap outward into the groove in the canister body.
IMPORTANT!
Make sure the cloth filter is fitting properly and securely into the
groove so it will not come loose when the machine is turned on.
Failure to do so could damage the motor and void your warranty.
If you have a problem
If a minor problem develops, it usually can be remedied quite easily when
the cause is found by using the check list Below.
Problem: Cleaner Won’t Run
- Fault condition.
- Possible solution.
- Power cord not firmly plugged in.
- Push plug into receptacle all the way.
- No voltage at wall plug.
- Check fuse or breaker at electrical panel.
- Replace fuse/reset circuit breaker.
- Thermal protector activated.
- Turn off the power switch and allow the unit to cool for 30 minutes (this will allow the thermal protector to reset).
Avoid conditions that will cause further tripping of the thermal protector.
Problem: Low Suction
- Fault condition.
- Possible solution.
- Filter dirty.
- Clean filter (See section 4).
- Obstruction in hose or cleaning tools.
- If the blockage is in the hose, insert a long blunt item, such as a broom handle, to clear the blockage.
- Check tools, wands, etc. For blockages.
- Blockage in the hose can also cause the thermal protector to activate. The motor requires air flow when operating.
- Dirt container full or mis-positioned.
- Check to see if the dirt container needs to be emptied. (See section 4). Check to see if the dirt container is properly positioned on the seal and the latches are secure.
If you are unable to resolve your problem, contact your local Cana-Vac dealer for further assistance.
