- 2 Phillips & small pocket screwdrivers
- Hammer
- Level (optional)
- Pencil
- Drill and bit (3/16” for drywall, 7/32” for plaster)
REMOVE YOUR OLD THERMOSTAT
- CAUTION TURN OFF POWER to system at the furnace, or at the fuse/circuit breaker panel before you begin.
- Remove cover and thermostat, but leave the wallplate with wires attached.
LEAVE THE WALLPLATE IN PLACE
LABEL WIRES AND REMOVE OLD WALLPLATE
Use a screwdriver to disconnect wires one by one. As you disconnect each wire, wrap it with the label matching the letter on your old thermostat. (Adhesive labels are supplied in your thermostat package.)
Remove the old wallplate only after all wires are labeled. Be careful not to let loose wires fall into the wall opening.
Wrap supplied labels securely around each wire. Do not let wires fall into wall opening!
For CT87K: If your old thermostat has 4 or more wires (not counting terminals C or C1), you may have purchased the wrong replacement thermostat. Stop now and call 1-800-468-1502 for advice.

SET FAN OPERATION SWITCH
Move the switch to the proper setting for your system:
- F: For gas or oil heating systems, leave the fan operation switch in this factory-set position (for systems that control the fan in a call for heat).
- E: Change the switch to this setting for heat pump or electric heat systems. (This setting is for systems that allow the thermostat to control the fan in a call for heat, if a fan wire is connected to the G terminal.)
SET CYCLE RATE SWITCHES
FINISH INSTALLATION
- Align the slots on the base with tabs on the thermostat, then push gently until the thermostat snaps into place.
- Restore electrical power at the heating/ cooling system, or at the fuse/circuit- breaker panel.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I set my Honeywell thermostat to heat?
Press the “System” button to place the thermostat in Heat, Cool or Off mode. Push the button once more to alter the setting. The setting you’ve chosen will be visible on the screen. The temperature settings are controlled via the up and down arrow buttons on the right side of the display.
What’s wrong with my Honeywell thermostat?
Your Honeywell thermostat may not be turning on for a variety of reasons. For instance, you might require fresh batteries for your thermostat. Alternately, there can be a problem with the thermostat’s internal wiring. The thermostat might potentially be confused, in which case a factory reset might be necessary.
What are the Honeywell thermostat’s batteries used for?
It is compatible with both heat pumps and traditional heating and cooling systems, and it has a push-button control panel with an LED display. In the event that the thermostat is not powered by 24-VAC power, the batteries serve as a backup. They should be changed once a year. Set the device to “OFF.”
My Honeywell thermostat’s batteries are nowhere to be found.
A Honeywell thermostat has a battery compartment on the side of the unit. Push the tab on the thermostat’s top in order to remove it. The compartment should simply slip out when you pull it to remove it.
How do I turn my Honeywell thermostat’s schedule off?
Press up or down until the appropriate temperature is displayed to permanently ignore the timetable. Press the Hold button to keep the new temperature for an infinite period of time. On the screen, the word “Hold” will display. If you want to stop either override and start the schedule again, click the Run button.
A reset button on a Honeywell thermostat?
There are no dedicated reset buttons on Honeywell digital thermostats. On the majority of Honeywell thermostat models, considerable finagling is necessary to return to the default settings. Each type, whether programmable, non- programmable, or Wi-Fi, has a different set of instructions.
Why won’t my thermostat activate the heat?
Checking the thermostat should be your first step if your heating system won’t turn on. It’s possible that the thermostat’s battery failed, turning it off. A power surge, brownout, or sudden power outage may have resulted in your hardwired thermostat losing its settings.
What degree should the heat be set at?
The best compromise between comfort and energy efficiency, according to ENERGY STAR, is to set your thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) when you’re at home.
What should you do if your thermostat doesn’t work?
Make sure the breaker is turned off and remove the cover if the thermostat is still unresponsive. Use canned air or a soft artist brush to remove accumulated debris that can be impairing its functionality if the inside appears unclean. Then check for problems like loose terminal screws or wire, and fix them.
Why is the temperature on my Honeywell thermostat not able to be changed?
A broken or damaged sensor is one of the most frequent reasons why a thermostat doesn’t reach the desired temperature. The thermostat’s reading of the outside temperature will be off if a sensor is the problem.
How long do Honeywell thermostat batteries last?
You only need to change the batteries in the majority of Honeywell thermostat models once every year. You have 60 days to replace the batteries after the “Battery/Batt Low” sign appears before the device stops working.
How can I tell if the battery in my thermostat is low?
The thermostat will stop working, the low batteries will ultimately run out, and your heating or cooling systems won’t work. The heating and cooling system is unable to comply with requests for temperatures that do not exist.
Does the thermostat suffer from low batteries?
A low battery can lead to a variety of inaccurate readings on the thermostat, which can result in the thermostat turning on when it shouldn’t, the room temperature being off, or the central system not functioning at all.
After changing the batteries in my Honeywell thermostat, do I need to reset it?
Make sure the batteries are the right kind and are put correctly to fix the Honeywell thermostat that stopped operating after a battery swap. Reset the thermostat to factory settings if it’s still not working.
Without batteries, how does a thermostat function?
The good news is that some thermostats don’t require batteries to operate. Although these thermostats typically contain battery holes, they are not necessarily necessary. Such thermostats depend on line voltage or a C-wire for electricity because they still require a power source.
