BOSS BX-4 Channel Stereo Mixer
Instructions
Thank you. and congratulations on your choice of this product. In order to get the fullest use of the functions provided by the BX-4, and be assured continuing satisfaction. please read these Instructions carefully.
- The BX-4 is a compact, light-weight mixer offering stereo output.
- A wide range of inputs. from microphone to line, are accommodated thanks to the provision of Gain Knobs.
- An Overload Indicator provides for mixing at the best level possible. with noise and distortion minimized.
- Equipped with Headphones Jack, convenient for individual practice.
- In addition to battery power. ordinary household current can be used as well, through the connection of the AC adaptor (PSA Series; optional).
Panel Description

Gain Knobs (channels 1 through 4)
Used to adjust the gain for each channel in order to achieve conditions that result in the least amount of noise and distortion in the input for each channel, for the purposes of mixing.
When rotated clockwisef( ), the gain is increased (volume becomes greater). When rotated counterclockwise( ). the gain is decreased (volume becomes lower). -
Panpot Knobs (channels 1 through 4)
Pan the input on each channel to the left or right (L, R). When at center (the center click position), the amplitude for left (L) and right (R) will be equal, and the sound image for the stereo field will be oriented at the center. When rotated counterclockwise ), the sound image shifts to the left, and when rotated clockwise( it shifts to the right. -
Channel Volume Knobs (channels 1 through 4)
Adjust the volume for each channel. When rotated clockwise(( ), the volume becomes greater; and when rotated counterclockwise ( ), the volume is decreased. Ordinarily. they are used while set at the blue colored markings. -
Pilot Indicator
Lights up when the power is turned “ON to indicate that the unit is ready for operation.
When this indicator becomes dimmed, or no longer lights, promptly replace the battery. -
Overload Indicators (L, R)
Light up when the mixed signals are too great. Should they light too frequently, rotate the Gain Knob for each channel counterclockwise( ) to decrease the gain.
These indicators light up at a point 6 dB prior to the clipping level (level at which distortion starts to occur), as determined by the internal circuitry, regardless of the position Master Volume is at. -
Master Volume
Provides for adjustment of overall volume, after the signals have been mixed. When rotated clockwise( ), the volume increases; and when rotated counterclockwise( ), the volume is decreased.
This knob works in common for both L and R, and is used to adjust what is output from the Output Jacks as well as the volume obtained through headphones. -
Input Jacks (channels 1 through 4)
Jacks used to connect equipment providing input (microphones, electronic musical instruments, tape recorders, CD players, etc.). -
Output Jacks (L, R)
Jacks providing output of the mixed signals. Can be connected with power amplifier,cassette deck, or the like. -
Headphones Jack
Jack which accepts connection of stereo headphones.
The volume obtained through headphones is adjusted using Master Volume.
To avoid excessive strain on ears, or damage to headphones, never turn power on or off while headphones are connected. -
Power Switch
When power is turned “ON” the Pilot Indicator lights, showing that the unit is ready for operation.
Before turning the power on or off, always pull out the plug for any headphones, and turn Master Volume down to “0*. -
AC Adaptor Jack
Jack which accepts connection of an AC adaptor (BOSS PSA Series; optional).
During use of an AC adaptor, the battery will not be used even if it remains
installed.
If battery power is not to be used for an extended period of time. the battery
should be removed. Otherwise, you risk causing malfunction resulting from
battery leakage.
How to Change the Battery
- Remove the battery compartment cover from the rear panel.
- Take out the old battery and put In a fresh one.
- Make sure the battery Is installed in the compartment as shown m the illustration.
- Replace the cover on the battery compartment.
Connections
Operation

Turn off the power on the BX-4 and on all other devices being connected.

Once all cables are connected properly, for each channel set the Gain Knob at “LINE”,and Channel Volume at ·r (position of markings). Then set the Master Volume at ·o·.

Turn the power switch “OW.
If at this ttme the Pilot Indicator seems dimmed. or does not light, it means that the battery is weak and should be replaced with a fresh one. -
Turn power ON for equipment connected to the Output Jacks (power amplifier, cassette deck, etc.).

Gradually turn the Master Volume Knob clockwise until it is at an appropriate position.

Adjust the volume for each channel using their Gain Knobs.
To obtain an optimum mix. with the least amount of noise or distortion. adjust the gain so you get the Overload Indicator lighting momentarily when the signals are at their peak. -
Set the Panpot Knobs at appropriate positions.

Adjust overall volume using the Master Volume Knob.
Important Notes
-
Avoid using or storing the unit in the following places, as damage could result.
- Places subject to extremes in temperature. (Such as under direct sunlight, near heating units, above equipment generating heat, etc.)
- Places near water and moisture. (Baths, washrooms, wet floors, etc.) Places otherwise subject to high humidity.
- Dusty environments.
- Places where high levels of vibration are produced.

Placing the unit near power amplifiers or other equipment containing large transformers may induce hum.

Avoid placing the unit where it may be subject to direct sunlight, or where near devices that may emanate heat. Avoid confining it within a tightly closed car or other such places. Otherwise, the unit may become deformed or discolored.

For everyday cleaning, wipe the unit with a soft dry cloth, or one that is dampened slightly. To remove dirt that is more stubborn, wipe using a mild, neutral detergent.
Afterwards, make sure to wipe thoroughly with a soft cloth. -
Never apply benzene, thinners, alcohol or any like agents, to avoid the risk of discolouration and deformation.

To prevent damage caused by leaking batteries, remove all batteries whenever the unit is not going to be used for an extended period of time.

When the Pilot Indicator begins to lose its brightness, promptly replace the battery.
Otherwise, sound may become distorted, or not be output at all.
• To prevent damage to speakers and other equipment when a power amplifier is being used, power should be turned on in this order: [BX-4] – [power amp]. When turning power off, perform the reverse: [power amp] – [BX-4] . In each case, always have the volume on both devices turned down to the minimum. -
Al any time that you notice a malfunction, or otherwise suspect there is damage, immediately refrain from using the unit. Then contact the store where bought, or the nearest Roland Service Station.
