MAVIC E-Deemax S 35 27.5 Inch 650B Center Lock Rear Wheel
The Mavic® team has put all its energy, experience and ENU expertise into designing and building your wheel. The recommendations in this user guide are applicable to all wheel types (road, MTB, track, etc.) and the original accessories supplied. Mavic® products are available only from approved Mavic® dealers.
BEFORE USING THE WHEELS AND ACCESSORIES, READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS AND ANY SPECIAL USER GUIDES PROVIDED CAREFULLY (ALSO AVAILABLE ON www.mavic.com). KEEP THE INSTRUCTIONS IN A SAFE PLACE AND PASS THEM ON TO POTENTIAL BUYERS AND USERS.
SAFETY WARNINGS
Cycling involves inherent risk of serious or possible fatal injury.
If you fail to follow these instructions you are putting yourself at risk of
serious or possible fatal injury.
If you are in any doubt about how to use, assemble, maintain, repair or
replace original parts, please consult your approved Mavic® dealer.
Use your common sense. Be vigilant and follow the traffic safety rules during
the day and in the dark (lights and reflectors). Modify your riding behavior
according to the weather.
For safe riding, you are recommended to wear a helmet, protective clothing and
visibility equipment.
Your Mavic® wheels can be used only with Mavic® quick releases.
Before each use, check the quick release adjustment as described in sections 9
and 10, make sure that the wheels are not buckled or dented, and check the
wear of the brake pads, rims, composite components and tyres. If you are in
any doubt, consult your approved Mavic® dealer.
Do not make any changes to your wheels (spoke tension, components, etc.). Even
minor changes to your wheels can damage them and involve potential risk.
In a descent, use discontinuous and front-rear balanced braking to limit the
heat generated on the wheel as this can result in damage to the rim, the inner
tube or the tyre.
All components undergo mechanical aging (high forces and fatigue) which can
alter their strength. Any cracking, scratch or color change may indicate the
end of a product’s service life, causing it to suddenly fail resulting in
injuries, and should be replaced.
If you fall or have an accident, it is essential to have your wheel checked by
your approved Mavic® dealer even if there are no visible signs of damage. In
the event of an impact, wheels with composite components must be returned to
the Mavic® MSC After Sales Service for inspection by your dealer.
Use a disc brake wheel only on a bicycle designed for disc brakes.
A UST® Tubeless wheel must be fitted only with a UST® Tubeless tyre, otherwise
the tyre may roll off the rim.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Every Mavic® wheel is intended for the following uses only:
- in the discipline stated on www.mavic.com. For example: a cross-country racing wheel on a cross-country circuit, etc.
- on a track bike, a road bike or an MTB – not suitable for other types of bike such as tandems, cyclo-cross, etc. (unless expressly stated otherwise in writing by Mavic®).
- Mavic® wheels may have a weight limit for the cyclist and equipment.
Ask your approved Mavic® dealer for advice.
Check the wear of the braking surfaces on the rim regularly. Replace the rim
if it is worn. Inspect the inside (especially under the rim tape if there is
any) and outside of the rim, looking for signs of fatigue or wear –
deterioration of the braking surfaces, cracks in the sidewalls or where the
spokes are attached.
All equipment (in particular the brake discs) must be tightened to the
specified torques by your approved Mavic® dealer, using a torque wrench.
Use Mavic® spare parts only (especially tyres, inner tubes, brake pads),
supplied and fitted by your approved Mavic® dealer.
INSTRUCTIONS
When reading these instructions please refer to the illustrations provided.
Fitting the rim tape
You are recommended to replace the rim tape whenever you change the tyre or
once a year if the wheel is in use, regardless of the distance covered.
Compatibility and tyre pressure (clinchers and tubulars)
If your wheel is supplied with a Mavic tyre, please refer to the attached user
guide.
- Before each use, make sure that the tyre is compatible with your wheel and that it does not affect toe clearance.
- When you inflate your tyres, observe the maximum pressure stated on the tyre or rim. If different pressures are indicated, use the lower pressure as the tyre may otherwise roll off the rim or the rim may be damaged.
- Before each use, make sure that the tyre is correctly seated. If a tyre is too easy to fit, it may be dangerous when it is in use.
- If you use anti-puncture sealants, it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some of these products may affect the rims and the tyres, and Mavic cannot accept responsibility for any damage caused.
- Use plastic tyre levers only.
- Use butyl inner tubes. Do not use latex inner tubes.
- For instructions on gluing a tubular to your wheel, refer to the user guide for the tubular and the glue.
- For composite wheels, use tubular glue that is resistant to the heat generated on the rim by braking.
4. Fitting and using the valve extender
5. UST® valves
6. Compatibility of cassettes/free wheels
7. Fitting the cassette
8. Fitting the brake discs
If your wheels are supplied with disc screws, always use these screws.
A: tightening torque of screws (5 N.m)
B: tightening torque of Center Lock nuts (40 N.m)
Center Lock: disc system licensed by Shimano® Inc.
9. Tightening the track wheel
Tightening devices
Your Mavic® wheels can only be used with Mavic® tightening devices (quick
releases or axles).
If you fail to tighten your quick release correctly (or sufficiently), you run
the risk of serious and possible fatal injury.
Always check that your quick release is compatible with your wheel.
Make sure that the fork material on your bike is compatible with quick
releases material– if you are in any doubt, consult your approved Mavic®
dealer.
Do not use (front and rear) forks if the fork ends are less than 4 mm in width. After assembly, check that your fork is compatible with Mavic quick releases as described in the section below
ASSEMBLY AND TIGHTENING.
Check that the quick releases are securely tightened every time you ride the
bike, especially if you have carbon fiber fork ends.
Do not make changes to or try to remove the retention lips (or any other
retention system) if your fork has them.
Mavic quick releases are not compatible with fork ends made of titanium or any
other harder material.
Every time you use your bike, make sure that the wheels are securely fixed to
the frame and fork – give a sharp tug on the wheel to check that the quick
release is tightened correctly. The wheel should not move or come off.
You must use the adjusting nut – not the lever – to tighten or loosen the
quick release.
ASSEMBLY AND TIGHTENING OF QUICK RELEASES
Quick releases are designed to be operated by hand.
Never use a tool to tighten or loosen the mechanism as this may cause damage.
If it is too easy to move the quick release lever to the CLOSE position, the
wheel will not be secured with sufficient clamping force.
Make sure that the hub of the wheel is fully engaged and centered within the fork (front) or frame (rear). Move the lever to the OPEN position and tighten the adjusting nut (not the lever) to increase the clamping force.
Push the quick release lever to the CLOSE position.
- If the clamping force is too great and the lever cannot be moved to the CLOSE position, move the lever to the OPEN position and loosen the adjusting nut (not the lever) to slightly reduce the clamping force.
- Repeat until the lever can be pushed to the CLOSE position.
- Do not forget to re-attach the brake cables if necessary.
- When you have finished setting the adjusting nut, the end of the quick release skewer must not be more than 5 mm inside the adjusting nut (viewed from the outside).
- In the CLOSE position, do not turn the lever like a wingnut.
- When the quick release is in the CLOSE position, it must leave a permanent mark on the fork ends. If it does not, the clamping force is insufficient and you should repeat the adjustment steps.
- In the CLOSE position, the lever must not touch any other part of the bicycle.
- Every time the wheel is attached, check that the front wheel is correctly centered on the front fork and that the rear wheel is centered in the frame.
Brake pad adjustment
Wet weather reduces visibility and grip and increases braking distances – the
rider must reduce speed and anticipate braking.
If you are in any doubt about the instructions below, consult your approved
Mavic® dealer.
Check the brake pad surfaces for any signs of oil, grease, foreign particles
(gravel, metal filings, etc.). If necessary clean the brake pad surfaces by
rubbing them with medium sandpaper.
Regularly check the brake pad wear indicator. Replace brake pads when necessary.
If the brake pads are supplied with the wheel, they must only be replaced with an identical Mavic® model (go to www.mavic.com for reference numbers).
To guarantee effective braking, only use brake pads specifically designed for the braking surfaces on the rim (UB Control®, Céramic®, Exalith®, carbon fiber, etc.). Remember that braking performance changes depending on the interaction between the various brake pads and rims. Some brake pads can cause the rims to wear out more quickly.
Newly installed brake pads may make a noise when they touch the rim. This will
stop after a run-in period.
After brake pads have been used with an aluminum rim, they should never then
be used with a composite rim.
Adjust the brake pads as shown in the table.
Bearing adjustment
QRM+: To adjust the bearing play, leave the wheel on the bike and use the hub
wrench supplied with the wheel. If there is any play, tighten the screw until
it disappears. If the wheel does not spin freely, undo the screw slightly.
QRM: QRM hubs are adjusted in the factory in order to optimize performance and
prevent premature wear.
QRM SL: Adjust the quick release closing force until the wheel has no more
play.
If you are in any doubt, if you cannot remove the play, or if the force seems
to be too small or too great, consult your approved Mavic® dealer.
Fitting wheels to your frame
Check that the wheel is compatible with your frame and fork (wheel diameter
and clearance in between the wheel and frame, hub, tire dimensions).
If your MTB wheel has an adapter on the hub, make sure it is positioned
correctly every time you remove the wheel.
Whenever you adjust the wheels, check that the front wheel is centered in the
front fork and that the rear wheel is centered in the frame.
If you are in any doubt, consult your approved Mavic® dealer.
MAINTENANCE
Every year, have your free wheel system, brakes and quick releases checked by
your approved Mavic® dealer.
The wheel components must be lubricated only by your approved Mavic® dealer.
Never clean your wheels using a high pressure washer or abrasive sponge. Use
only soap and water. To prevent rust, wipe down after washing or rain.
Solvents, detergents, paints, abrasives and adhesives can damage composite
wheels. The damage caused is often invisible. Do not use your wheels if they
have been exposed to these substances.
High temperatures can damage the wheels. Do not leave the wheels in a car or close to a direct or indirect source of heat (vehicle muffler, radiator, etc.). Do not hang up your bike by the wheel.
Clean the braking surfaces of your wheel regularly (except for rims with carbon fiber and Exalith braking surfaces), preferably using the Mavic® abrasive rubber rim stone to remove traces of brake pads and other soiling.
