HANDLING ALKALINE BATTERIES

WARNING
When handling alkaline batteries, basic safety precautions should be followed, including the following

1. Should fluid from the battery accidentally get into your eyes, there is a threat of loss of eyesight, do not rub them. Immediately rinse your eyes with clean tap water and then consult a physician immediately.
2. Do not put the battery in a fire, expose it to heat, dismantle or modify it. If the insulation or safety valve is damaged, the battery may leak fluid, overheat or explode.
3. Do not insert the battery with the poles reversed. Doing so may cause some abnormality or a short and the battery may leak fluid, overheat or explode.
4. Keep the battery out of the reach of children. If the battery is swallowed, contact a physician immediately.
5. If the alkali fluid gets in your mouth, rinse your mouth with water and contact a physician immediately.
6. If the alkali fluid gets on your skin or clothes, it may burn your skin, thoroughly rinse the affected area with tap water.
7. Do not mix new and old batteries or other makes of batteries. The different attributes may cause the battery to leak fluid, overheat or explode.
8. This battery was not made to be recharged. Recharging this battery may damage the insulation or internal structure and may cause the battery to leak fluid, overheat or explode.
9. Do not damage or remove the label on the exterior of the battery. Doing so may cause the battery to short, leak fluid, overheat or explode.
10. Do not drop, throw or expose the battery to extreme impact. Doing so may cause the battery to leak fluid, overheat or explode.
11. Do not alter the shape of the battery. If the insulation or safety valve is damaged, the battery may leak fluid, overheat or explode.
12. Immediately remove batteries when they have lost all power. Leaving the batteries in the unit for a long time may cause the batteries to leak fluid, overheat or explode due to gas that is generated by the batteries.
13. Remove the batteries from the unit when not using the unit for an extended period of time. The batteries may leak fluid, overheat or explode due to gas that is generated by the batteries.
14. Do not apply solder directly to the batteries. The heat may cause the batteries to leak fluid, overheat or explode.
15. Do not get the batteries wet. Doing so may cause the batteries to overheat.
16. Store batteries someplace out of direct sunlight where the temperature and humidity are not high. Not doing so may cause the batteries to leak fluid, overheat or explode. Also, it may cause the life and performance of the batteries to decline.
17. Follow the regulations of the local government when disposing of these batteries.
18. NEVER mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries with this product.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
In the event of malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. The appliance must be connected to a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

DANGER – Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipment grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal. Check with a qualified electrician or service person if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the appliance is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug connected to the appliance – if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

FOR GROUNDED, CORD-CONNECTED APPLIANCE RATED LESS THAN 15A AND INTENDED FOR USE ON A NOMINAL 120V SUPPLY CIRCUIT
The appliance is for use on a nominal 120V circuit and should be connected to a grounding outlet that looks like the one illustrated below. The use of a temporary adaptor is not recommended.

LCDI POWER CORD AND PLUG
This air conditioner is equipped with an LCDI (Leakage Current Detection and Interruption) power cord that is required by UL. This power supply cord contains state-of-the-art electronics that sense leakage current. If the cord is damaged and leakage occurs, power will be disconnected from the unit.
The test and reset buttons on the LCDI Plug are used to check if the plug is functioning properly.

WARNING: Test LCDI before each use.
To test the plug:

1. Plug power cord into a grounded 3 prong outlet.
2. Press RESET (on some units a green light will turn on).
3. Press the TEST button, the circuit should trip and cut all power to the air conditioner(on some units green light may turn off).
4. Press the RESET button for use. You will hear a click and the A/C is ready for use.
5. The power supply cord must be replaced if it fails to trip when the TEST button is pressed and the unit fails to reset.

NOTES

• The RESET button must be engaged for proper use.
• Do not use the power supply cord as an ON/OFF switch. The power supply cord is designed as a protective device.

CAUTION: A damaged power supply cord must be replaced with a new power supply cord.

• The power supply cord contains new user serviceable parts. Opening the tamper-resistant case voids all warranty and performance claims.

NOTE: Your units power cord and plug may differ from the one shown.

WARNING – RISK OF FIRE
It is important the plug fits tightly into the wall outlet.
If the plug does not fit securely and appears loose, it should not be used. Have a licensed electrician replace the receptacle.

NOTE : All the illustrations in this manual are for explanation purpose only. The air conditioner you have may be slightly different.

WINDOW REQUIREMENTS:
Your air conditioner is designed to install in standard double hung windows with opening widths of 23 to 36 inches (584mm to 914mm).

WARNING

• Do not, under any circumstances, cut or remove the third (ground) prong from the power cord.
• Do not change the plug on the power cord of the air conditioner.
• Aluminum house wiring may present special problems-consult a qualified electrician.
• When handing unit, be careful to avoid cuts from sharp metal edges and aluminum fins on front and rear coils.

MOUNTING HARDWARE

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW

PREPARE THE AIR CONDITIONER.

1. Install the top rail on the AC.
   Install the Top Rail on the AC with (4) 3/8”.
   For safety reasons, all 4 screws MUST be securely fastened.

2. Pull out the window panels.
   Pull out both the the left and right window panels approximately half way, as shown.

3. Install the window panels.
   Insert the right window panel into the slot on the top right side of the air conditioner and slide down.
   Repeat on the left side.

4. Fasten the panels to the AC.
   Stretch the wind screen outward and insert the upper and lower frame strips of the Panels into the AC slot.

5. Before continuing with installation, check to make sure the following steps have been taken.

   • A. The upper and lower frame strips of the Panels are inserted into the slots.
   • B. Top Rail is securely fastened on the AC with 4 Screws.
   • C. The window panels are installed in the slots, on the side of the AC.

INSULATE THE WINDOW.

1. Cut the adhesive foam seal to the width of the window. Apply it to the underside of the window sash.
   You should cut the foam to be the entire width of your window from the left to the right side.

2. Insert the foam insulation strips.
   In order to reduce the noise generated during the operation of the air conditioner, use the foam insulation strips to fill in any gaps.
   If your window already has a liner or insulation strip, you can skip the above steps.

LIFT THE AC INTO THE WINDOW.

1. Lift the assembled AC into the window frame with the help of another person.
   To avoid injury or property damage, two people should lift the assembled AC into the window frame. Make sure someone is holding the back of the unit. It may be helpful to rest the unit on the inside window sill, before properly positioning the air conditioner.

2. Properly position the bottom flange, BEHIND the inside window sill.
   Properly position the bottom flange behind the inside window sill and into the bottom horizontal channel of the window frame as shown. The front of the bottom bar should be pressing up against the back edge of the sill.
   The air conditioner should be tilted back about 3 to 4 degrees downward to the outside. This is to make sure the condensation drains from the exterior of the unit. After proper installation, condensate should not drain from the overflow drain hole during normal use.A storm window can prevent the air conditioner form tilting outside at the correct angle to drain properly. If a storm window can not be removed, a board can be cut and fastened to the window sill .
   CAUTION: If a storm window blocks the AC, Please install according to the figure above.

3. Close the window down onto the AC, and pull the panels to the side of the window.
   Once the AC is centered and the bottom flange is successfully positioned, close the window down onto the AC, behind the top rail. See diagram above. Pull the panels to the side of the window.

SECURE THE AC.

1. DRIVE LOCKING SCREWS.
   Follow the above instructions and drive the screws.

COMPLETE INSTALLATION BY SEALING GAPS.

1. Cut the non-adhesive foam seal to fit the width of your window.
   Make sure you are cutting the non-adhesive foam. Measure and cut the foam to fit the entire width of the window. Insert the foam between the gap of the upper and lower sashes of the window to seal it.

AIR CONDITIONER FEATURES

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, read the IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS before operating this appliance.
CAUTION: Please always wait 3 minutes when turning unit off then on again, and when changing from cool to fan and back to cool. This prevents compressor from overheating & possible circuit breaker tripping.

To begin operating the air conditioner, follow these steps:

1. Set the thermostat to the highest number (coldest or cooler setting).
2. Set the selector control to the highest COOL setting.
3. Adjust the louver for comfortable air flow (see Air Directional Louvers).
4. Once the room has cooled, adjust the thermostat to the setting you find most comfortable.
5. Make sure that the air flow inside and outside are not obstructed by anything.

AIR DIRECTIONAL LOUVERS

The louvers will allow you to direct the air flow Up or Down (on some models) and Left or Right throughout the room as needed. Pivot horizontal louvers until the desired Up/Down direction is obtained. Move the Lever(s) from side to side until the desired Left/Right direction is obtained.

FRESH AIR VENT CONTROL (models BD12NWES and BD14NWES)

The Fresh Air Vent allows the air conditioner to:

1. Recirculate inside air – Closed (See Fig. A)
2. Draw fresh air into the room- Fresh air (see Fig. B)
3. Exhaust air from the room – Vent (see Fig. C)

Note: For maximum cooling efficiency keep the vents closed in COOL mode.

CONTROL PANEL

POWER
Press the POWER button to turn the unit on or off.

LED DISPLAY
The LED displays the set temperature in either °F or °C and activated timer settings. In fan only mode, it shows the room temperature. If the room temperature is too high or low it will display “HI” or “LO”.

ARROWS
Use these buttons to increase or decrease the set temperature or timer.

MODE
To choose the operating mode, press the Mode button. Each time you press the button, it will scroll through Auto, Cool, Dry and Fan modes. The indicator light will illuminate to show the selected mode.

AUTO MODE

• When you set the air conditioner in AUTO mode, it will automatically select cooling, or fan only operation, depending on the selected temperature and the room temperature.
• In this mode, the fan speed is selected automatically and cannot be adjusted. The unit will automatically select the Energy Saver function in auto cool and Auto Fan.

COOL MODE
Select Cool Mode and use the Up and Down buttons to choose the target cooling temperature between 60°F (16°C) and 86°F (30°C). When Cool Mode is selected, the fan speed can be adjusted by pressing the fan button.

DRY MODE
This function reduces humidity in the air. In this mode, the fan speed is selected automatically and cannot be adjusted.

FAN MODE
Use this fan only function for room air circulation or to exhaust stale air. Select a fan Speed.
During this function, the LED display will show the actual room temperature, not the set temperature as in the cooling mode.

FAN
Press this to select AUTO, LOW, MED or HIGH fan speeds. The selected speed will be illuminated on the corresponding indicator light.

FLASHCOOL
Press this button to initiate the FlashCool function. FlashCool provides maximum cooling and sets the fan to the highest speed. NOTE: The FlashCool function will turn off when the mode or fan speed are adjusted.
LED
Press to illuminate the LED display on the unit. Press again, to turn off the LED display.

TIMER

• Press the Timer button to activate TIMER ON.
  Press or hold the UP or DOWN buttons to select a time for the unit to turn ON automatically.

• To select a time for the unit to automatically start, press or hold the UP or DOWN button to change the timer by 0.5 hour increments, up to 10 hours, then at 1 hour increments up to 24 hours. The control will count down the time remaining until it will automatically start up based on the current time.

• Press the Timer button to activate TIMER OFF.
  Press or hold the UP or DOWN buttons to select a time for the unit to turn OFF automatically.

• To select a time for the unit to automatically stop, press or hold the UP or DOWN button to change the timer by 0.5 hour increments, up to 10 hours, then at 1 hour increments up to 24 hours. The control will count down the time remaining until it will automatically stop based on the current time.

The selected time will register in 5 seconds, and the system will automatically revert back to display the previous temperature setting or room temperature when the unit is on.

• Turning the unit ON or OFF at any time or adjusting the timer setting to 0.0 will cancel the TIMER ON or TIMER OFF settings.

ECO

• Press ECO to activate this energy saving function in COOL, AUTO COOL, AUTO FAN and DRY modes.
• When the unit is in ECO mode, the indicator light on the display will turn on.
• In COOL and AUTO COOL mode, the compressor will turn off once the room is cooled to the set temperature but fan will continue to cycle on and off. The compressor will turn back on when the room temperature rises above the user’s selected set temperature.
• In AUTO FAN mode, the fan speed will automatically adjust based on the ambient temperature to save energy.
• In DRY mode, the fan speed will automatically adjust based on the ambient temperature and if the temperature is below 50˚F (10˚C) the compressor stops running.

SLEEP

• Press the SLEEP button to activate in Cooling mode. In this mode the selected temperature will increase by 2˚F/1 or 2˚C for 30 minutes after the mode is selected.
• The temperature will then increase by another 2˚F/1 (or 2˚C) after an additional 30 minutes. This new temperature will be maintained for 6 or 7 hours before it returns to the originally selected
• temperature. This ends the Sleep mode and the unit will continue to operate as originally programmed.
• The Sleep mode program can be canceled at any time during operation by pressing the Sleep button again.

FILTER INDICATOR LIGHT
This feature is a reminder to clean the Air Filter for more efficient operation. The LED (light) will illuminate after 250 hours of operation. To reset after cleaning the filter, press the SLEEP button and the light will turn off.

NOTE: If the power to the unit is cut off unexpectedly, due to to a power failure, it will restart with the previous function settings once the the power resumes.

The Cool circuit has an automatic delayed start of 3 minutes if the unit is turned off and on quickly. This prevents overheating of the compressor and possible circuit breaker tripping. The fan will continue to run during this time.

BATTERY INSTRUCTIONS

Batteries Not Included

• Step 1 : Push the button next to the battery cover to release the battery cover.
• Step 2 : Insert 2 AAA batteries (not included), making sure “+” and “-” are facing the correct direction.
• Step 3 : Once battery is installed, push battery cover closed.

WARNING

• Battery must be disposed of properly. Do not short circuit or dispose of in fire.
• Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
• Caution for ingestion.
• Non-rechargeable batteries are not to be recharged.
• Exhausted batteries are to be removed from the product.

WARNING

• Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.
• Observe correct polarity (+ and -) when replacing batteries.
• Do not store or carry batteries so that metal objects can contact exposed battery terminals.
• When replacing battery, replace it with same or equivalent type.

WARNING: DO NOT INGEST BATTERY; CHEMICAL BURN HAZARD

• This product requires a battery. If the battery is swallowed, it can cause severe internal burns in just 2 hours and can lead to death.
• Keep new and used batteries away from children. If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop using the product and keep it away from children.
• If you think batteries might have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body seek immediate medical attention.
• Do not incinerate or dispose of appliance together with household waste material!An appliance that has reached the end of its life must be collected separately and returned to an environmentally compatible recycling facility.

REMOTE CONTROL

• ON/OFF BUTTON
  Turns the unit on or off.

• TEMP UP BUTTON
  Increases temperate in 1°F (1°C) increments. Max. temperature is 86°F (30°C).

• SET BUTTON
  Scrolls through to select the symbol to activate the FOLLOW ME function:
  The FOLLOW ME function enables the remote control to measure the temperature at its current location and send this signal to the air conditioner at 3 minute intervals. When using AUTO or COOL modes, measuring the ambient temperature from the remote control, instead of the air conditioner, will enable the air conditioner to optimize the temperature wherever the remote is located to ensure maximum comfort.
  The selected symbol will flash on the display area, press the OK button to select.

• TEMP DOWN BUTTON
  Push this button to decrease the indoor temperature setting.

• FAN SPEED BUTTON
  Selects fan speeds in the following order:

• TIMER ON BUTTON

CLEANING & CARE

DANGER

1. Be sure to unplug the unit before cleaning or servicing.
2. Do not use gasoline, thinner or other chemicals to clean the unit.
3. Do not wash the unit directly under a tap or using a hose. It may cause electrical danger.
4. If the power cord is damaged, it should be repaired by an authorized technician.

AIR FILTER CLEANING
CAUTION: Clean your air conditioner occasionally to keep it looking new.Be sure to unplug the unit before cleaning to prevent shock or fire hazards.

The air filter should be checked at least once a month to see if cleaning is necessary. Trapped particles in the filter can build up and cause an accumulation of frost on the cooling coils.

• Grasp the top of the filter and gently pull up and out.
• Wash the filter using dishwashing liquid and warm water. Rinse filter thoroughly. Gently shake excess water from the filter. Be sure the filter is thoroughly dry before replacing. Instead of washing, you may vacuum the filter clean.

NOTE: Never use hot water over 104°F (40°C) to clean the air filter. Never attempt to operate the unit without the air filter.

CABINET CLEANING

• Be sure to unplug the air conditioner to prevent shock or fire hazard. The cabinet and front may be dusted with an oil-free cloth or washed with a cloth dampened in a solution of warm water and mild liquid dishwashing detergent. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry.
• Never use harsh cleaners, wax or polish on the cabinet front.
• Be sure to wring excess water from the cloth before wiping around the controls. Excess water in or around the controls may cause damage to the air conditioner.
• Plug in air conditioner.

WINTER STORAGE

• If you plan to store the air conditioner during the winter, remove it carefully.
• Turn off the unit and disconnect power cord. Remove foam seal from between windows, and unscrew safety sash lock. Remove screws installed through frame and frame lock.
• Keeping a firm grip on air conditioner, raise sash and carefully remove. Be carefully not to spill any remaining water while lifting unit from window. Store parts with air conditioner.
• Cover it with plastic or return it to the original carton.

TROUBLESHOOTING & WARRANTY

BEFORE YOU CALL FOR SERVICE
IF THE AIR CONDITIONER FAILS TO OPERATE:

• Check to make sure that the air conditioner is plugged in securely. If it is not, remove the plug from the outlet, wait 10 seconds and plug it in again securely.
• Check for a blown circuit fuse or a tripped main circuit breaker. If these seem to be operating properly, test the outlet with another appliance.

IF NONE OF THE ABOVE SOLVES THE PROBLEM, CONTACT A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN. DO NOT TRY TO ADJUST OR REPAIR THE AIR CONDITIONER YOURSELF. Any person who is involved with working on or breaking into a refrigerant circuit should hold a current valid certificate from an industry-acreddited assessment authority, which authorizes their competence to handle refrigerants safely in accordance with an industry recognized assessment specitication.

WARNING
Do not use means to accelerate the defrosting process or to clean other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

Servicing shall only be performed as recommended by the equipment manufacturer. Maintenance and repair requiring the assistance of other skilled personnel shall be carried out under the supervision of the person competent in the use of the flammable refrigerants.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Troubleshoot your problem by using the chart below. If the air conditioner still does not work properly, contact BLACK+DECKER customer service center or the nearest authorized service center. Customers must never troubleshoot internal components.

TROUBLE ANALYSIS

Air conditioner does not start|

• Wall plug disconnected. Push plug firmly into wall outlet.
• House fuse blown or circuit breaker tripped. Replace fuse with time delay type or reset circuit breaker.
• Plug Current Device Tripped. Press the RESET button.
• Power is OFF. Turn power ON.

Air from unit does not feel cold enough|

• Room temperature below 62˚F(17˚C). Cooling may not occur until room temperature rises above 62°F(17˚C).
• Temperature sensing behind air filter element touching cold coil.
• Keep it from the cold coil.
• Set to a Lower temperature.
• Compressor stopped when changing modes. Wait for 3 minutes after set to the COOL mode.

Air conditioner cooling, but room is too warm- ice forming on cooling coil behind decorative front.|

• Outdoor temperature below 64˚F(18˚C). To defrost the coil, set FAN ONLY mode.
• Air filter may be dirty. Clean filter.
• Refer to Care and Cleaning section. To defrost, set to FAN ONLY mode.
• Thermostat set too cold for night-time cooling. To defrost the coil, set to FAN ONLY mode. Then, set temperature to a Higher setting.

Air conditioner cooling but room is too warm

– No ice forming on cooling coil behind decorative front.

|

• Dirty air filter-air restricted. Clean air filter. Refer to Care and Cleaning section.
• Temperature is set too low. Set the temperature to a higher setting.   1 is the MIN setting and 7 is the coldest MAX setting.
• Air directional louvers positioned improperly. Position louvers for better air distribution.
• Front of units is blocked by drapes, blinds, furniture, etc. – restricts air distribution.
• Clear blockage in front of unit.
• An open doors, windows,or register may allow cold air to escape. Close any doors, windows, or registers.
• The room may be too warm. Allow additional time to remove “Stored heat” from walls, ceiling, floor and furniture.

Air conditioner turns on and off rapidly|

• Dirty air filter-air restricted, Clean air filter.
• Outside temperature extremely hot Set FAN speed to a Higher setting to bring air past cooling coils more frequently.

Noise when unit is cooling|

• Air movement sound. This is normal. If too loud, set to a slower FAN setting.
• Window vibration – poor installation. Refer to installation instructions or check with installer.

Water dripping INSIDE when unit is cooling.| Improper installation. Tilt air conditioner slightly to the outside to allow water drainage. Refer to installation instructions – check with installer.
Water dripping OUTSIDE when unit is cooling.| Unit removing large quantity of moisture from humid room. This is normal during excessively humid days.
Room too cold| Temperature is set too high. Set the temperature to a lower setting.
Remote Sensing Deactivating Prematurely (Only remote models)|

• Remote control not located within range. Place remote control within 20 feet and pointed in the general direction of the air conditioner unit.
• Remote control signal obstructed. Remove obstruction.

Error codes in LED display on the unit: EH ( xx ) , EL ( xx ) , EC ( xx ) , PH ( xx ) , PL ( xx ) , PC ( xx )|

• Turn off the unit and disconnect power. Wait for approx. 10 minutes, plug the unit in and turn the unit on again.
• If the problem persists, contact Black + Decker customer service.

LIMITED WARRANTY
Any repair, replacement, or warranty service,  and all questions about this product should be  directed to W Appliance Co. at 844-299-0879   from the USA or Puerto Rico.
W Appliance Co. warrants to the original purchaser that the product will be free from defects in material, parts and workmanship for the period designated for this product. The warranty commences the day the product is purchased and covers up to a period of 1 year (12 months) for labor/1 year (12 months) for parts (manufacturing defects only)/carry in service/ and a total of 2 years (24 months) for compressor part only. W Appliance Co. agrees that it will, at its option, replace the defective product with either a new or remanufactured unit equivalent to your original purchase during the warranty period.

Exclusions: This warranty does not apply to the below:

1. If the appearance or exterior of the product has been damaged or defaced, altered or modified in design or construction.
2. If the product original serial number has been altered or removed or cannot be readily determined.
3. If there is damaged due to power line surge, user damage to the AC power cord or connection to improper voltage source.
4. If damage is due to general misuse, accidents or acts of God.
5. If repair attempts are done by unauthorized service agents, use of parts other than genuine parts or parts obtained from persons other than authorized service companies.
6. On units that have been transferred from the original owner.
7. On products that have been purchased as refurbished, like new, second-hand, in a “As-Is” or “Final Sale” terms.
8. To products used in a commercial or rental setting.
9. To products used in settings other than ordinary household use or used other than in accordance with the provided instructions.
10. To damages for service calls for improper installations.
11. To glass parts and other accessory items that are included with the unit.
12. Transportation and shipping costs associated with the replacement of the unit.
13. Food loss for loss due to product failure or delay in service, repair or replacement.
14. Service calls to instruct you how to use your product.
15. Service calls to repair or replace the house fuse, reset the circuit breaker or correct the wiring in the house.

REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT AS PROVIDED UNDER THIS WARRANTY IS THE EXCLUSIVE REMEDY OF THE CUSTOMER; W Appliance Co. SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES FOR BREACH OF ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY ON THIS PRODUCT, EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT PROHIBITED BY APPLICABLE LAW. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ON THIS PRODUCT IS LIMITED TO THE DURATION OF THE WARRANTY.
