Introduction
Pushing a button to fall asleep is as simple as using a Yogasleep sound machine to induce sleep. The original sound machine, Dohm Classic, was created by Yogasleep in 1962 and has been cherished ever since. The Classic is a fan- based natural white noise generator with two speed settings for a range of tone and volume options. Simply set the switch to high or low, adjust the cap and collar to your preferred sound, and then watch the magic noise-masking happen. You can find the perfect relaxing white noise for you by modifying the pace and sound openings, which will also let you personalise the volume and tone.
Using Your Sound Conditioner
- Your Dohm masks unwanted, uncontrollable, disturbing noises that interfere with your ability to sleep, relax, or concentrate.
- Your Dohm creates a restful, pleasing atmosphere in situations where extreme quiet makes the slightest noise disturbing
- Your Dohm provides a sound barrier in situations where confidentiality or privacy is desired
- Daily or nightly use of approximately one week should be suffient to get used to Your Dohm sound conditioner.
Your Dohm should be positioned away from you, so that the sound it generates is able to fill the room and give you the greatest benefit.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS: PLEASE READ!
Your new sound conditioner is equipped with a “polarized” line cord plug. A polarized plug is similar to a regular “lamp cord” type of plug, except one of the blades is larger than the other. The large or wider blade represents the ground side of the line cord, which ensures correct electrical polarity. This feature allows the plug to be inserted into an electrical receptacle outlet in only one direction (the wide blade will usually be to the left as you face the outlet). If the plug doesn’t fit the receptacle in one direction, rotate the plug and try it in the opposite position. Some homes are not equipped with polarized electrical receptacles. While not required, we do recommend use of a surge protector if your electricity is prone to fluctuations in current.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not use this product with any
solid-state speed control device (i.e. dimmer switch, motor controller,
variable speed control).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CORD-CONNECTED APPLIANCES
A polarized plug will not fit into a non-polarized receptacle, so it’s necessary to have a qualified electrician install a polarized electrical receptacle. Do not operate this sound conditioner if it has a damaged cord or plug. Discard the product or return to an authorized service facility for examination and/or repair. Do not run the machine’s cord under carpeting. Do not cover the cord with throw rugs, runners, or similar coverings. Do not route the cord under Further or applies. Arrange your machine so that its cord is away from traffic areas, and where 1t will not be tripped over.
CAUTION
The holes at the base of your Dohm serve as an air exhaust. Blocking these holes or restricting airflow around the product in any way can cause severe overheating, which could seriously damage your sound conditioner and the area surrounding it.
This appliance can be used by children aged from 8 years and above, and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge, if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe_ way and under. Stand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the appliance. No user maintenance required.

(Did you know that our products often last for decades? Impressive, isn’t it?) Marpac warrants this product to the original purchaser to be free of defects for a period of one year from the date of purchase. The limited warranty covers all parts and/or workmanship against defects or breakage in normal intended use. The warranty does not cover any damage caused by accidental dropping, rough handling or misuse of the product; including tampering; or the application of electrical power other than that given on the serial number label. Altering or tampering with the serial number will also void this warranty. This warranty gives you specific legal rights; and you may also have other rights, which vary from state to state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it add a lot to your electric bill if you keep it on, for example, 10-12 hours a day?****
I’ve measured the electricity usage using a Kill-a-Watt meter. On the low setting, it uses 5 watts of power. On the High setting, it uses 16 watts of power. The extra cost on your electricity bill depends on how much you pay for power. The average cost per kilowatt for electricity in the United States is 12 cents. Using this average cost for electricity, it would cost you $0.22/month on the Low setting and $0.69/month for the Hi setting if it’s left on for 12 hours per day.
Can it uh, “mask” bathroom noises?****
Not if it’s located inside the bathroom, but there are ways it could mask those noises if the unit is located outside the bathroom. It’s effectiveness is based on proximity to listener, not proximity to the noise.
I am hearing a high pitched whine from the motor. Do all units have this “feature” or are my ears too sensitive?****
This would completely depend on the sensitivity of your ears, but you might have a louder-than-average motor. On behalf of the company, we’d be happy to look at it for you under our warranty program.
Can this product be used in a home office to block out noise from the family (kids getting home from school, conversations in other rooms, televisions)? I’m having issues with this type of background noise while on calls for work. Will the noise from the device be too distracting and heard from people I am on calls with?****
My son has one in his home office and I have one in my bedroom. The white noise is pretty soothing after you get used to it. I am not sure about your telephone calls. You can try it and if it doesn’t work for you, return it. It’s worth the try.
Would this unit be able to mask stomping sounds, opening drawers and other disturbances I hear from my upstairs neighbor, particularly around bedtime?****
It definitely would for me. I really don’t hear anything other than the sound of the machine. If you do get one , give it a couple of days to get used to the sound. At first it will seem very noisy , but a person gets used to it. I work nights and sleep during the day and I used to wake up to the neighbors dogs and lawn mower. Not anymore. I sleep very soundly.
I’m going on a trip with my cousin and aunt but they snore a lot and I can’t stand that noise. If the machine is turned on in same room does it work?****
If you are all sleeping in the same room, you will likely still hear them snoring. You could try putting it right next to your bed. But it basically just sounds like a big box fan.
Does it have a battery option, to help when there’s a power failure? If so, what type battery does it use?****
No battery option it sucks way too much current.
Can this unit operate on batteries as well?****
NO. This must be plugged into house current 120 Volt AC .
Our house backs up to a busy street. The road noise is awful Our family room is the closest room to the road. Would this help block road noise?****
This device has two settings – one a bit louder than the other, so it might help cover up some road noise. Of course, it could be that the Sound Machine might make enough white noise that it would bother hearing a television, etc. Not sure.
Can I use it outside to block neighbors noise?****
I’m sure it can. It’s puts out a good amount of sound, we use it to drown out the noise of the traffic on the corner we live on.
Will this drown out or mask noise disturbances like a distant freight train, road noise, or dogs for a living room area about 20′ x 20′ in dimensions?****
I love the sleep machine and used it at home and while traveling. Yes it does drown out road noise, great for hotels too so you don’t hear doors opening and closing in the hall. I would think a distant train and anything outside except for sirens and really loud vehicles, plus noises in other parts of the house- TVs, maybe dogs roaming around, but not barking and mild noises in the room. The air-whisper sounds is great -like a constant fan and so much better than the artificial sounds from other machines.
Is it good at blocking noise of street traffic/ or not?****
We love it. We live on the 18th floor of a condo building in downtown Chicago and it does a good job of blocking nice not all of it such as fire engines and ambulances which are frequent but most all other noise is blocked out.
How many watts does this device consume? If that isn’t stated, what is the rated current (Amps)?****
The information on the unit only says 120 volts, 60HZ, 18 watts. Sorry I couldn’t help.
Noisy neighbor talks loudly at night right on the other side of the wall near my bed. Would this help me fall asleep? Her talking drives me nuts****
Yes It may not drown her out entirely but it does muffle the noise. My kids’ room was right next to the living room and they heard voices all the time. Now they sleep through the noise.
I would like to work from home taking incoming calls however need a very quiet environment. Would this help cut down apt noises?****
It helps mask noises very well by creating a white noise on top of the pre existing “distracting” noises… Keep in mind that It is loud, but soothing. So I’m not sure how well it would work if you need a very quiet environment as it does generate a bit of noise.
Do you think it will mask the sound from neighbors playing basketball? I live in San Francisco and the houses are side by side, no space in between.****
It blocks out the noise from all our noisy neighbors and we’re in an apartment building
Will this help to block sound of neighbor revving motorcycle?****
It helped us with next door neighbor’s loud truck muffler and early morning lawn crews and we have ours on low. We also have blackout drapes which helps a little with outside noise. Not sure how loud or how close the motorcycle is to you.
