If you’re reading this, you’ve likely just purchased a flagpole and are looking for a guide to install it. If so, you’ve come to the right place! If you’re still considering your purchase, look no further than our Commercial Flagpole buying guide.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL YOU NEED?

FIG-1

  • Concrete
  • Gravel
  • Sand (make sure it’s clean and dry)
  • Post-hole digger or auger (strongly recommended)
  • Plumb line
  • Level
  • Hardwood wedges (to make sure the flagpole stays level)
  • Waterproof sealant
  • Mixing tray for your concrete

SELECT A LOCATION FOR YOUR FLAGPOLE

  • This can have a large impact on how much enjoyment you can get from it.
  • Consider the balance of being able to see it from your window, and having it visible to others as they walk or drive past.
  • To enhance its beauty and majesty, try to choose a location with maximum natural light that will allow the wind to reach your flag from multiple directions.

MAKE SURE IT’S SAFE TO DIG THERE

  • Call 811 (“Call Before You Dig”) who will send a technician out to ensure there are no wires or pipes under the ground where you want to install your flagpole.
  • More information here.

DIG A HOLE FOR YOUR FLAGPOLE

  • This should be about 4-6x the butt diameter of your flagpole, 6 if your conditions are windy or your ground is sandy.
  • Depth should be to the length of your ground sleeve, plus 6″ for drainage gravel.

CREATE A STRONG FOUNDATION

  • Install ground spike (for galvanised metal poles only).
  • Place about 6″ of gravel in the bottom of the hole and stand your ground sleeve level on top of it.
  • Use wooden wedges to ensure the sleeve is plumb (level on two axes) and secure it enough that it won’t move when you add cement. It’s easiest to ask someone to hold it in place so it won’t move in the following steps.
  • Cover or stuff the top with paper (to prevent anything falling in the hole)
  • Mix your cement and shovel into the hole around (not inside) the ground sleeve until you reach 1-2″ below ground level, packing lightly with a trowel or shovel. Leave overnight to cure.

PREPARE YOUR FLAGPOLE FOR STANDING

  • If your flagpole is in sections, swedge them together (slide the end of one piece inside the end of the next), then attach the truck to the top of the pole.
  • Screw in the top ball or eagle ornament (get yours here if you haven’t already).
  • Thread the halyard through the pulley, attach the cleat to the bottom section of the pole, then loosely wrap and tie the halyard ends round the cleat.

Warning: this step can be dangerous. Make sure you have at least one helper, and check there are no overhead power lines before you begin.

STEP OR STAND YOUR FLAGPOLE

  • Place the flash collar onto the bottom of the flagpole (not a necessity but can be purchased here) and push it up on the pole so it’s out of the way.
  • Remove the paper from the ground sleeve and hold the butt of the pole over the opening, asking your helper(s) to begin lifting the pole from the top end.
  • As they do so, guide the butt of the pole into the ground sleeve, keeping a firm downward pressure.
  • Once in, one of you hold the pole level whilst the other stands back as far as they can from the pole, holding the plumb line to visually align and level your flagpole.
  • Gradually add sand into the sleeve, continuing to check the level as you go, until it is filled 1/2″ from the top.
  • Using a thin piece of wood (or another thin tool), pack the sand into the sleeve.
  • Once the tube is fully packed, add a layer of sealant around the pole and over the sand, filling in the remaining 1/2″.

RAISE YOUR FLAG (OR FLAGS!)

  • We’re almost at the best – and certainly the most emotional part of the project, but first we need to tie up our loose ends, so to speak.
  • We recommend the tied halyard hangs 2 feet below the cleat, so you may need to trim yours at this stage.
  • Be careful not to trim too much – it’s easy to cut away more rope, but not to add back!
  • Tie the two ends of your halyard in a double fishermans knot.
  • Attach the snap hooks to the halyard by folding a loop in the rope and threading it through the loop in the end of the snap hook. Then bring the loop over the snap end of the hook and pull tight.
  • We recommend you put the top hook just above the halyard knot; that way you can be sure it won’t ever keep you from raising your flag.
  • Next, attach the top snap hook to the top grommet of your flag and use your flag as a measuring tool to make another knot in the rope just below where the bottom grommet will connect. Thread this snap hook the same way. Attach it to your flag and raise it up!

ADMIRE YOUR GOOD WORK

At this point, your flag should be up and flying. Congratulations! Now you can sit back and revel in its beauty. And if your flagpole is where neighbors can see it, prepare for the compliments to roll in.
