Design and Fabric Selection
The Arkansas Crossroads quilt is created by repeating and arranging a single block consisting of 2 four-patch units and 2 football units. For best results, ensure a high contrast between light and dark elements in the block. Choose the print fabric first and let its colors guide you in selecting coordinating fabrics.

Fabric Preparation
It is recommended to pre-wash the fabric before use. Serge or zig-zag the cut edges and use color catchers to prevent bleeding.

Here is an example of a “one-block wonder.” A single block is repeated and arranged to create this dynamic quilt. The block consists of 2 four-patch units and 2 football units. Beginning quilters will have no trouble mastering this technique. The border is lightly pieced to “complete” the design in the body of the quilt.
Color selection is important, as the design is strongest with a high contrast between the light and dark elements of the block. Choose the print fabric first, then let the colors in the print guide you to the coordinating fabrics needed.
There is an alternative layout that creates diagonal lines across the quilt, instead of the “X” variation shown on the sample. This will be discussed and demonstrated in class.
For the best result, use only 100% cotton quilting fabric. Home dec, outdoor fabric, polyester blends will not perform in the same way. Pre-washing the fabric is highly recommended. Just remember to serge or zig-zag the cut edges first, and drop in a color catcher or 2 in case of color bleeding.
