Detaching and Attaching the Wagon to a Towing Vehicle

INTRODUCTORY WORDS
Congratulations on purchasing your new Lapelland wagon! This manual contains instructions related to the safe and pleasant use of the wagon. Please read through the instructions before you start using the wagon. Please also note that the devices and equipment in your wagon may differ due to changes in the equipment of the wagon customized for you, or model changes and updates to the products described in this manual. The specific operating manuals for the devices can be found in your wagon in paper form and as a list of links at the end of this manual.
General information about detaching and attaching the wagon to a towing
vehicle
Detaching the wagon
Make sure that the wagon is horizontal in the sideways direction while it is
still attached to the towing vehicle. If the wagon is tilted, place a concrete
slab or a similar piece of wood under one of the tyres and pull the wagon onto
it with the towing vehicle. Make sure the wagon remains in place, e.g. by
engaging the parking brake (Figure 1. part 1) or by supporting the tires with
e.g. clamps. Lower the jack wheel of the wagon and remove the wagon from the
towbar of the towing vehicle. By adjusting the jack wheel (Figure 1. part 2),
you can get the length of the wagon in the horizontal direction. Place e.g.
concrete slabs under the corner supports and tighten the corner supports.
Note! The corner supports are not intended for lifting or moving the wagon
sideways, and when used in this way, they may bend and break. The warranty
does not cover corner supports if they are damaged as a result of the use
mentioned above. Once these measures have been taken, you can enter the wagon.
Attaching the wagon to a towing vehicle
Attach the wagon’s safety cable (Figure 1. part 4) to the towbar of the towing
vehicle and check its condition. Lift the wagon coupler (Figure 1. part 5)
onto the hitch ball of the towing vehicle and push it down until it locks onto
the towbar. A clear click can be heard when the wagon coupler is locked in
place. Pay attention to the weight of the wagon when lifting the wagon
coupler, so as not to injure yourself. Connect the wagon’s power plug (Figure
- part 3) to the towing vehicle’s power socket and check that the wagon’s lights are working before starting to drive. Before connecting the power plug, check that both the power plug and the power socket are clean. ATTENTION: Do not start driving if the lights of the wagon are not working properly.
Before starting to drive
Check the condition of the wagon coupler and the locking of the connection
between the wagon and the towing vehicle. The hitch ball must be placed
completely inside the wagon coupler. The wagon’s safety cable must be
connected to the towbar, and the cable must be in good condition. The wagon’s
power plug must be connected to the towing vehicle, and the wagon’s lights
must function properly. The wagon’s tires, tire pressures and tire attachments
must be checked. The wagon’s support legs must be raised up and any parts
attached to the wagon, such as climbing steps, etc., must be removed. Loose
goods and furniture placed inside the wagon must be secured well or removed
from the wagon. The wagon’s parking brake must be released. The jack wheel of
the wagon must be raised to the upper position, and it must be turned to a
position corresponding to the direction of travel. The doors and hatches of
the wagon must be properly locked. It is prohibited to drive with the doors or
hatches unlocked, as it may lead to hazardous situations! Make sure that there
is no one inside the wagon. Please note that in winter, snow must be removed
from the roof of the wagon before driving. Even when there is no snow, it is
always a good idea to check that there are no loose objects, such as tree
branches, etc., on the roof.
Removing the wagon from a towing vehicle
Remove the wagon as follows: Open the clamp of the jack wheel and lower the
wheel to the ground. Adjust the position of the jack wheel by turning the
handle. The position of the wheel should be adjusted so that the wagon is
definitely horizontal. Open the wagon coupler by lifting the handle and
turning the handle until the coupler opens and disengages from the hitch ball.
Lift the wagon coupler slightly to the side of the hitch ball. When lifting,
pay attention to the weight of the wagon so you don’t injure yourself.
Disconnect the safety cable of the wagon from the towbar of the towing
vehicle. Disconnect the wagon’s power plug from the towing vehicle’s power
socket and attach it to the bracket on the wagon. Park the wagon on flat and
non-slippery ground. Never stop or park the wagon on a sloped or soft surface.
When you have parked the wagon in a suitable spot, rotate the support legs
down so that they support the wagon on the ground and apply the parking brake.
The wagon must be parked and set in a horizontal position, so that the doors
and hatches cannot open by themselves and that water or snow that has
accumulated on their edges cannot flow into the wagon. The warranty does not
cover damages caused if the wagon is not placed according to the instructions.

Winter use of the wagon and the battery

Note that during winter use of the wagon, more energy is used to maintain the temperature and other functions of the wagon than during the summer season. Make sure that the support legs are set firmly on the ground when snow starts to accumulate on the roof. The roof of the wagon can withstand a load of approx. 30 cm of wet snow. Remove snow from the roof if more accumulates. When removing snow, be careful to avoid damaging the pipe pass-through seals and solar panel cells on the roof.
You can leave the wagon in storage for the winter without heating, but make sure that there is no water left anywhere, where it could break the equipment of the wagon when it freezes; Empty the water tanks of the toilet equipment, the sauna pipe water tanks and the fresh water tanks of the kitchen and toilet, as well as any grey water tanks, hot water heaters and hoses, etc. of water before you allow the temperature of the wagon to drop towards the freezing point. -
The wagon has M+S tires installed, which can be used in both summer and winter. Please note that they are not studded tires. When driving, you must note that the grip of the tires is not, necessarily, as good as the grip of the studded tires of the towing vehicle. If a tire bursts, it should be changed in the same way as with a normal car tire. When changing one of the tires, lower each support leg of the wagon to the ground before you start jacking up the wagon into the air at the tire location. The jack should be placed under the axle on which the tire is to be recharged. The tire bolts should be tightened to approx. 90 Nm. The wagon panel must be removed at the location of the tire before the tire can be replaced.

Depending on the equipment supplied, the wagon may also have a battery. The batteries will last for years if they are used, maintained and stored correctly. The battery voltage should not be allowed to drop below 12.3V, especially in winter. A discharged battery may freeze and be damaged, even in normal winter temperatures. In winter, an unused battery should be fully charged (12.7V) and stored in a dry and cool place, but not at minus degrees. The warmer the storage space, the quicker the battery will discharge. You can also connect a battery maintainer to the battery during the winter or fully charge it a few times during the winter. Before using again, fully charge the battery.
Lapelland wagon equipment and devices
Extension cord and power socket
Depending on the equipment supplied, the wagon has either a mains power plug as well as a mains cable or a power current plug and a power current cable. The power plug is located in the front box of the wagon and there is a hole at the bottom of the box for a cable to pass through.
Sauna
Sauna stove and sauna stones
The wagons with saunas come with a Harvia M3 model wood stove as standard. At
the time of delivery, the stones have not been placed in the stove. There is
storage grease present in the stove, which must be burned off first before the
stones are placed there. Burn a couple of stacks of dry chopped wood in the
fireplace so that the stove heats up properly and ventilate the wagon at the
same time so that the grease fumes can be removed. Then wait for the stove to
cool down properly and place the stones on the stove, the largest stones at
the bottom and the smallest stones at the top. When packing the stones, leave
air gaps in between. → You will get better steam.
The water tank of the stove
There is a water tank (by the chimney) above the stove, where washing water
can be heated at the same time as heating the sauna. The tank must always
contain water when lighting the stove. The water tank is filled from an
opening on the top of the tank and hot water is dispensed from a tap at the
bottom of the tank. Be careful not to burn yourself when pouring water into a
bucket. Remember to empty the tank, especially in winter, so that the water
does not freeze and damage the tank. The top edges of the tank are not
watertight in order to avoid a build-up of pressure.

Benches
The benches in Lapelland’s wagons are thermally modified wood and have been
treated with paraffin oil. The benches and oil treatment wear out through use
(a normal phenomenon), so retreatment should be performed according to use.
The retreatment recommendation is at least once a year.
Sauna ventilation
There is a replacement air valve located on the wall next to the stove. Open
the replacement air valve fully when lighting a fire in the sauna fireplace.
The sauna also has an exhaust air valve, which is located on the wall near the
border of the ceiling. Open the exhaust air valve, at the latest, after using
the sauna and burn at least one more load of wood so that the sauna room can
dry out fully.
Fireplace and chimney damper
Before the first heating, check that there is no material in the fireplace that does not belong there. The fireplace is lined from the inside with flint and is immediately ready for use. During the first couple of heating times, the fireplace may create a smell of burning as the storage grease burns off. Depending on the weather and the location of the wagon, the draught of the stove may vary greatly. Open the replacement air valve on the wall next to the fireplace fully when you light a fire in the fireplace. Also note that the chimney damper must always be open when using the fireplace. The chimney damper is open when the lever on the chimney is pulled out, and closed when the lever is pushed into the side of the chimney. When lighting the fireplace, use plenty of kindling and burn only dry and, preferably, small pieces of wood. The surface of the fireplace heats up during use, so do not place items on top of the fireplace in order to avoid a risk of fire.

Front box, i.e. technical space
In the wagon, the front box of the wagon is located on top of the drawbar. The front box generally contains an electrical centre, a 12V fuse box, gas bottle, fuel tank, as well as a battery, charger and solar panel accessories.

Power plug (Part 1)
The wagon’s power cord is connected to the power plug.
Electrical centre (Part 2)
The electrical centre holds the wagon’s residual-current device and quick-
release fuses and other similar parts/components.
Power socket (Part 3)
You can connect, for example, the power cord of a charger to the socket in the
front box.
3.4.4 Underfloor heating transformer and connection box for underfloor heating
mats (Parts 4 and The transformer and connection box for the underfloor
heating mats are located in the front box.
Charger (Part 6)
The charger is already connected to the battery, and it starts charging the
battery as soon as the power cord of the wagon is connected to a power source.
The charger recognizes the state of the battery and stops charging when the
battery is full. The charger has different charging functions and you can find
out more about them in the charger’s own user manual. Make sure that the
charger regularly receives power to charge the battery. If the battery’s
voltage often drops too low, the battery may “die”, which means that it will
no longer be able to charge properly. If the wagon will remain unused for a
long time, disconnect the cable that goes to the minus pole of the battery
from the battery.
Inverter (Part 7)
The inverter in the front box converts the 12V voltage coming from the battery
into a 230V voltage.
12V fuse box (Part 8)
The 12 Volt fuses of the wagon are located in the fuse box.
Solar panel controller (Part 9)
The solar panel controller controls the charging voltage coming from the solar
panel.
Residual current socket (Part 10)
A residual current socket is necessary in the wagon when the fuses are
controlled with a changeover switch.
3.5 Electrical centre and 12V fuse box with voltage display
Electrical centre
Depending on the equipment of the wagon, the electrical centre contains a
residual current device (1), fuses (2), KWH meter (2), changeover switch and
main power switch (4).
If the wagon’s electricity consumption becomes overloaded, the fuse may trip,
causing the supply of electricity to the devices to stop (in this case, the
fuse breaker will be in the downwards position). The circuit breaker can be
turned back up and if the fuse trips immediately again and repeatedly, there
are too many devices using electricity behind that fuse.
If the residual current device trips, it can be returned to the upper position
in the same way as the fuses. If the switch does not remain in the upper
position, then there is a fault in some electrical device or damage to the
wagon’s electrical wiring. In this situation, you cannot use any electrical
equipment, and must contact an electrician.
The KWH meter shows the amount of electricity consumed up to that point.
With the change-over switch, you can choose whether to use electricity from
the wagon’s battery or from an external power source via an extension cord.
The main power switch cuts off all power to the wagon (only for wagons with a
power current).
12V fuse box and voltage display
The front box has a fuse box for 12V fuses and a voltage display when 12V
devices have been chosen for the wagon. To open the fuse box, unscrew the
screws (4 pcs) at the corners of the box cover.
The number of fuses varies depending on the equipment supplied. The fuses are
shaped like flat fuses and their size depends on the devices being used. You
can check a fuse by removing the fuse from its holder and seeing if the
resistance wire inside the fuse is intact. If the wire is not intact, the fuse
is broken and needs to be replaced. When changing a fuse, note that the size
of the fuse must remain the same.
The current voltage level of the battery can be seen from the voltage display
in the cover of the fuse box. The table below shows the resting voltages of 12
V batteries at a temperature of + 25⁰C. In winter, the battery voltage is
slightly lower. If the battery is charged or stressed, the reading will
deviate from these values. So check the voltage without charging or when under
a load.

Wagon lights
Depending on the equipment supplied, the wagon may have interior and exterior
lights that work with wireless switches. The lights also have a dimming
function. The operation of circuit breakers in brief; Pressing the top edge of
the switch turns the lights on, pressing the bottom edge turns them off.
Dimming the lights takes place as follows. First, turn on the lights. Then
press the switch at the top again, and the lights will start dimming
automatically. You can stop the dimming process at the point you want by
pressing the switch at the top again.
Underfloor heating
If comfort underfloor heating is installed in the wagon, its adjustment is
performed by using a thermostat located on the inner wall of the wagon.
Comfort underfloor heating means that the floor of the wagon feels warm
underfoot, but the heating power is not sufficient to maintain the temperature
of the entire wagon in colder weather. More detailed instructions on the
operation of the thermostat and underfloor heating
can be found in the device’s own user manual. Note! You must not place thick
rugs or, for example, beanbags on the floor, which will prevent the transfer
of heat from the] underfloor heating to the room air. In this case, the heat
may increase too much on the surface of the floor and may damage it. The
warranty of the wagon does not cover damage to the floor as a result of such a
situation.

Electric heaters
Wall fan
The wall heater is switched on by using the red switch on the side of the
heater and the adjustment is made with a remote control. Wall radiators are
adjusted by using the controls on the side or top of the radiators. Please
note that the heating devices must not be covered! For more detailed
information on the devices, see the heaters’ own user manual.
Wall radiator
Depending on the model, the wagon has a varying number of radiators of various
powers. The radiators on the wall of the wagon keep the wagon warm. Wall
radiators are adjusted by using the controls on the side or top of the
radiators. Please note that the heating devices must not be covered! For more
detailed information on the devices, see the heaters’ own user manual.
Air source heat pump
Depending on the equipment, the wagon may have an air source heat pump. The
air source heat pump is operated with the help of a remote control. Read the
air source heat pump’s own user manual before using the device.
Kitchen fittings
Depending on the equipment supplied, the wagon may have either an electric
kitchen or a gas kitchen.
Electric kitchen
The refrigerator and water tap in the kitchen work with electricity. The sink
cabinet has a 20 litre water tank with a 12V submersible pump. The pump starts
up with the help of a microswitch when the tap is opened. An electric hot
plate is also available as an accessory. A drain pipe passes from the bottom
of the sink through the bottom of the wagon to the ground. Read the
equipment’s own user manual before use.
Gas kitchen
The refrigerator in the kitchen works with gas and electricity. The fittings
have replacement air holes located behind the refrigerator through the bottom
of the wagon or the wall for air intake for the gas refrigerator, and the
surface of the furniture has an air grille for air circulation purposes. The
water tap works with electricity. The sink cabinet has a 20 litre water tank
with a 12V submersible pump. The pump starts up with the help of a microswitch
when the tap is opened. A two-part gas hob is also installed on the kitchen
counter. In the gas kitchen model, the gas bottle is installed in the front
box of the wagon, from where the gas is brought via a gas line to the kitchen
sink cabinet. The sink cabinet has a gas manifold (image below), where the
taps open/close the flow of gas to the refrigerator and stove. Always keep the
taps closed when you are not using the equipment. A drain pipe passes from the
bottom of the sink through the bottom of the wagon to the ground. Read the
equipment’s own user manual before use.
Toilets
There are five different types of toilet types available for wagons; portable
toilet, cassette toilet, freezing toilet, incinerating toilets and water
toilet.
Portable toilet
The portable toilet is a Portapotti 565. It has a small water tank for
flushing the toilet, and the toilet can be emptied by removing the waste tank
at the bottom of the device. Read the toilet’s own user manual before use.
Cassette toilet
The cassette toilet is a Thetford C-224 CW. The cassette toilet has a flushing
water tank, and flushing water is added by using the filling hatch on the
outside wall of the wagon. Waste is also emptied by using the maintenance
hatch on the outside wall of the wagon. Read the toilet’s own user manual
before use.
Incinerating toilet
The incinerating toilet is a Sunwind El-dorado. Its operation is based on the
fact that the device burns the waste generated in the toilet and only a small
amount of ash remains. An incinerating toilet requires electricity to work.
During the waste burning process, the incinerating toilet requires a great
deal of replacement air, so the replacement air valve on the toilet room wall
must be open during the combustion process, whereupon the temperature of the
toilet area may drop. Read the toilet’s own user manual before use.
A freezing toilet
The freezing toilet is a Separett Freeze. Its operation is based on the
freezing of waste so that odours do not arise. The toilet requires a power
socket in the space to function. In addition, bio waste bags must be used in
the toilet. Read the toilet’s own user manual before use.
Water toilet
A water toilet is equivalent to a regular water toilet connected to municipal
technology. The sewerage pipe of the toilet is insulated against freezing.
Read the toilet’s own user manual before use.
Solar panel and controller
A solar panel installed on the wagon generates power for the battery in the
wagon. In practice, this means that the wagon’s battery can be charged, even
if no external electricity source is connected to the wagon. The front box of
the wagon has either a separate solar panel controller or, depending on the
device, the controller can also be built into the charger. The solar panel is
connected to the controller/charger in such a way that it charges the battery
whenever there is enough solar energy in the panel and does not need to be
controlled separately. More detailed information about the controller and the
panel can be found in the device’s own user manual.
Wagon ventilation
The wagon has gravity ventilation and, in some models, a stove fan. In
addition, the low windows of the wagons can be opened and equipped with
mosquito nets, which can be used to increase the ventilation. See the user
manual for the ventilation valves supplied with the wagon.
The exterior door of the wagon and its adjustment
When leaving the factory, the proper functioning of the wooden exterior door
of the wagon is tested so that it works correctly when the wagon is straight
and the wagon’s support legs are on the ground. However, the frame of the
wagon endures the effects of outdoor temperature and humidity changes, as well
as seasonal changes, in the same way as fixed buildings. In this case, the
exterior door may start to rub against the frames at some point and may feel
like it won’t close or open properly anymore. The door can be adjusted both
vertically and horizontally by using the adjustment features in the hinges.
Also, the lock plate in the frame at the lock slot can be moved in the depth
direction either closer to the door or further away. More detailed
instructions on door adjustments can be found in the door’s own user manual.
NOTE! Due to the usual fluctuation of air humidity and the subsequent possible
need for adjustments, wooden doors are not covered by the warranty.
Biodiesel heater Wallas
The Wallas-Biodiesel heater in the wagon is supposed to heat the room air. The
fuel tank of the biodiesel heater is located in the front box of the wagon and
the control panel is found on the inner wall of the wagon. More detailed
instructions on the operation of the heater and temperature adjustments can be
found in the heater’s own user manual.
Energy package Economy
Energy package Economy includes a solar panel, a controller, 260Ah battery,
400W inverter, charger and 12V plugs. The lights and one socket work via the
battery, so the inverter must be switched on when using them. The 12V plugs
are powered directly from the battery.
Energy package Premium
Energy package Premium includes two solar panels, a controller, 260Ah battery,
3000W inverter, charger, toggle switch, kWh meter, and 12V plugs. With the
toggle switch, you can choose whether you want to use mains power or battery
power. When using mains power, the charger charges the battery, while, when
using battery electricity, charging is done with the help of solar panels.
There is also a separate kWh meter for both positions of the toggle switch,
which can be used to monitor the electricity consumption.
Truma heating system
The Truma heating system heats up water and the room air by using gas or
electricity. See the user manuals supplied with the wagon for more detailed
instructions.
230 V+ water system
The 230V+ system includes an 80 l fresh water tank, a 50 l hot water heater
and a 12V pressurized water pump. See the user manuals supplied with the wagon
for more detailed instructions.
Bathroom extractor fan
The bathroom extractor fan operates automatically by measuring the air
humidity. When taking a shower, the fan starts and turns off after about 20
minutes. An increase in air humidity caused by reasons other than a shower
also starts the fan automatically.
Maintenance painting
The exterior walls of the Lapelland wagons are double painted with Tikkurila’s
Vinha paint. The maintenance interval is, as a result, long and our
recommendation for repainting is 10-20 years.
If the outside walls of the wagon are painted in a different colour at the
customer’s request, the maintenance painting interval may be significantly
shorter. For example, we recommend a maintenance interval of 2-5 years for a
kulto painted wagon.
Gas-powered appliances and use of gas
Take special care with gas-powered devices so that the gas is not allowed to
flow freely into the room air of the wagon and read the user manuals of the
devices carefully! The gas bottle is located in the front box of the wagon.
The gas bottle may not be used inside the wagon. Always close the gas taps
when the gas appliances are not being used. If you detect the smell of gas in
the wagon, ventilate the wagon immediately and direct people to exit the
wagon.
Wagon warranty and insurances
- Lapelland wagons have a two-year warranty. The warranty period begins when possession of the wagon is handed over. Lapelland is responsible for correcting any defects or delivery deficiencies detected during the warranty period, which have been reported within a reasonable time after the defect was discovered. Errors or defects caused by normal wear and tear or the customer’s acts are not covered by the warranty.
- If the structure or equipment of the wagon is changed after their delivery, the customer is solely responsible for their functionality and legality.
- The warranty does not cover the wagon for those parts where the customer has made or ordered changes after receiving possession of the wagon.
- The wagon must hold traffic insurance whenever the wagon is registered and moved. Otherwise, you can insure the wagon with comprehensive insurance or add it to the insurance of the movables of a home or cottage. Please note that if the wagon is insured as personal property, the insurance is only valid for the property whose personal property it is insured for. A wagon purchased through vehicle financing from a financing partner always requires comprehensive insurance with financing security.
