Asset Protection and Continuity of Service
A roof is an assurance policy.
In most cases, building owners aren’t concerned with the particular material
their roof is made out of, as long as it performs. The function of a roof is
to protect what’s inside the building the structure, its contents and
occupants. The roof shields a building from damage to these assets. What
building owners are really looking for is performance. They’re looking for
durability. Warranties cover leak repair, not asset damage or disruption of
service. Every investment decision an owner makes should include an
understanding of needs and weighing the value of price versus risk.
Your reputation is on the line.
Where does the finger point when a roof leaks? The roofing contractor.
Statistics show that faulty installation is the primary cause of roof leaks.
That means, regardless of the leak source, your relationship with your
customer and your reputation are on the line with each installation. You’re
not just in the roofing business, you’re in the “Asset Protection & Continuity
of Service” business.
A portfolio of quality roofing materials.

through the roof deck, reducing energy costs for building owners as well as
thermal strain to the roof system.
FlintBoard closed-cell polyisocyanurate insulation board offers the highest
R-value (resistance to heat flow) per inch available and long-term thermal
resistance values (LTTR) from 5.7 to 27, LTTR. FlintBoard HD (High Density)
may also serve as a lighter weight cover board, as compared to more
traditional gypsum-based options.

ASPHALTIC MEMBRANES
Understanding Products and Systems
Low-slope roofing products come together to form a low-slope roofing system.
CertainTeed offers a range of roll good and liquid-applied products, which
equate to hundreds of system configurations, specification and restoration
options. In an effort to simplify system selection, this Product Selection
Guide highlights our recommended systems by application, their value, and
individual product benefits.
Asphaltic Products & Systems
Asphaltic products and systems have five main components for differentiation:
8
Material
CertainTeed offers non-modified and polymer-modified bituminous (asphalt-
based) roll goods. Non-modified asphalt products are categorized as built-up
roofing (BUR). These products are permeable so that hot asphalt can flow
through the product as layers are “built up” on the roof, resulting in a
relatively thick, watertight roof system. APP-modified products are
manufactured with atactic polypropyleneinfused asphalt which increases
material strength and toughness, especially in high Uv areas. SBS-modified
products are manufactured with styrene-butadiene-styrene infused asphalt which
increases flexibility, especially in low temperatures. Roof systems may
consist of one or multiple materials depending on the desired performance,
warranty, and cost.
Reinforcement
Reinforcement mats serve as the structure to asphaltic low-slope roll goods.
They are saturated and coated with non-modified or modified asphalt.
CertainTeed offers low-slope products with either fiberglass mat or polyester
mat at varying thicknesses.
Fiberglass stands up well to heat and tension. Its inherently high melting
point affords superior fire resistance when combined with a fire-retardant
asphalt formulation. Fiberglass-reinforced products applied in hot asphalt
retain excellent dimensional stability. Additionally, fiberglass has superior
tensile strength. When combined with SBS-modified asphalt, the sheets will
resist roof movement until the stress absorbed in the mat forces a break.
Polyester’s predominant benefits are puncture resistance and high elongation.
Polyester products handle rooftop foot traffic better. They can also
cyclically absorb the strain of building movement and return back to their
original dimension.
Additives
In addition to the modification of asphalt with APP or SBS polymers,
CertainTeed blends certain products with additives to further enhance desired
performance characteristics.
“FR” products, for example, are manufactured with proprietary additives to
increase fire-resistance.
Warranty
The driving factor for system selection is most often warranty duration.
CertainTeed offers system dependent, standard warranty durations between ten
and twenty-five years. Additionally, Star Contractors can increase warranty
durations 25% by engaging in an Integrity Maintenance Contract with their
client.
CertainTeed offers three asphaltic membrane warranty options: Asphaltic
Membrane Limited Warranty on Materials Integrity Roof System Limited Warranty
Integrity Roof System No dollar Limit (NdL) Limited Warranty See Product and
System Guarantee section for more details.
Application
Low-slope bituminous products are installed utilizing one of five methods:
· Mechanical Fastening · Mopped with Hot Asphalt · Applied with Cold Adhesive
· Torch-Welded · Self-Adhered
This Selection Guide categorizes products and systems by application method,
though some systems utilize multiple methods and some products can be
installed in a variety of ways. Each application method has benefits and
limitations:
Fasteners
Hot Asphalt
Cold Adhesive Torch
Self-Adhered
Benefit
Fast installation, allows the product to move with the roof.
Proven, durable, cost-effective material.
No kettle, minimal tools, very good adhesion when applied correctly.
Faster than hot asphalt or cold adhesive, very good adhesion when applied
correctly.
Faster to train labor and install, very good adhesion when applied correctly.
No fumes, no kettle, no burn/fire risk.
Limitation
Penetrations allow water incursion; method is only feasible for base/anchor
sheets.
Fumes/odor, burn-risk, cost and availability of trained labor and equipment.
Takes up to 60 days to cure, high fumes, relatively high price for material.
Risk of burn/fire; risk of improper application; cost and availability of
trained labor, cost of propane.
Not yet widely commercially accepted, application can be temperature
dependent.

ASPHALTIC MEMBRANES
Selecting Base/Ply Sheets
Select the base and/or sheet that best fits your needs. The following should
be considered when selecting a base and/or sheet for your project:
Why ply? A third layer, or more, of water protection exponentially decreases
the leak risk of any roof system. That said, interply or ply sheets are not a
required element of every low-slope bituminous roof system. Interply sheets
are often specified in order to obtain an extended warranty durations or to
comply with a fire or wind uplift rating.
Application
All base sheets can be mechanically fastened, if required, to support a
nailable roof deck. If the roof deck is not nailable (or insulation/coverboard
has been installed and is now the surface to which the base sheet will be
applied) the base sheet’s application options become of greater consideration.
The charts on the following pages detail the range of base sheet application
options and associated performance features.
All CertainTeed base sheets, with the exception of Flintlastic SA NailBase,
can be utilized as interply (ply) sheets. Some contractors prefer to limit the
number of materials on a project and, therefore, choose to install a base and
ply layer of the same material. Other considerations are described below.
Building Fire/Wind Requirements
Projects requiring a specific fire or wind uplift resistance rating may call
for a specific base or ply sheet to be incorporated into the system. Contact
CertainTeed Commercial Roofing Technical Services at
800-396-8134 x2 for system selection
assistance.
Cap Sheet Application
Another element to consider when selecting a base sheet is the cap sheet.
CertainTeed offers one base sheet that must be correlated with specific cap
sheet applications, as well as two cap sheets that must be correlated with
specific base sheets:
Black diamond® Base Sheet is a two-square, SBS-modified, fiberglass reinforced
self-adhered base sheet, but requires heat to create an ideal short-term bond.
As such, Black Diamond Base Sheet is only an option if the cap sheet is
installed with hot asphalt or torch-applied. Black Diamond is a go-to base
sheet for staged construction as it’s namesake slag top surface can be left
exposed for up to 6 months!
Flintlastic® SA Cap and Flintlastic SA Cap FR are one-square, SBS-modified,
polyester (SA Cap) and fiberglass (SA Cap FR) reinforced, self-adhered cap
sheets. The Flintlastic SA family is engineered to be installed together. As
such, the selection of either cap sheet dictates that either Flintlastic SA
NailBase (for nailable substrates), Flintlastic SA PlyBase (for non-nailable
substrates), or Flintlastic SA MidPly (high performing base/ply for non-
nailable substrates) will be utilized.
Selecting Cap Sheets
Select the cap sheet that best fits your needs. The following should be
considered when selecting a cap sheet for your project: Cap Sheet Application
Application method is frequently the primary driver of cap sheet product
selection. The charts on the following pages detail which CertainTeed cap
sheets can be installed with hot asphalt, cold adhesive, torch or factory
applied self-adhesive and the performance features each application method
delivers.
Building Fire/Wind Requirements
Projects requiring a specific fire or wind uplift resistance rating call for
each element of the roof system to be prioritized, as the system is granted
these performance approvals, not the singular component. CertainTeed has
preapproved systems within various code and compliance bodies (i.e. UL, FM,
Miami-Dade). Contact CertainTeed Commercial Roofing Technical Services at
800-396-8134 x2 for system selection
assistance.
TIP: Flintlastic® SA Cap FR offers the speed, safety and fume-free benefits of
self-adhering technology as well as the ability to obtain Class A Fire
Resistance and Class Iv Impact Resistance.
Cap Sheet Surfacing & Reflectivity
With the exception of Flintlastic STA and Flintlastic STA Plus, all of
CertainTeed’s cap sheets are surfaced with granules which provide Uv
protection and aesthetic appeal. CertainTeed low-slope granule blends are
designed and manufactured with a true blend multi-granule mix to complement
our most popular shingle colors, allowing for a uniform transition from steep
to low-slope roofs on a single property.
CertainTeed does not stock all cap sheets in every color. Some colors are
made-to-order or are not available depending on product. Please refer to the
cap sheet color chart for product availability on page 26-27.
Most CertainTeed cap sheets are available with CoolStar®, highly reflective
surfacing. CoolStar cap sheets are sold at a premium price.

Torch-down roofing technology has only strengthened since first coming on the scene in the 1970’s. CertainTeed modifies roofing asphalt with plasticizing atactic polypropylene (APP) polymers to enhance product toughness, especially in environments with elevated Uv exposure. These APP modified bitumen products are staples of the torch roofing community, especially in the West and South. Ask any experienced roofing contractor, and they will tell you that a properly installed, high-quality torch system creates a multi-layered barrier that will protect a building for decades to come.

LIQUID-APPLIED ROOF RESTORATION & COATING
SMARTCOATTM At a Glance
Why tear off when you can restore?
Roof tear off is expensive, laborious and adds tremendous amounts of waste
into landfills. In some cases, additional, significant expense is required to
bring the new roof system into code compliance. Roof restoration can extend
the life of the existing roof for decades. CertainTeed offers a comprehensive
line of silicone or acrylic-based restoration systems consisting of roof wash,
surface prep products (substrate dependent, only used as needed),
mastics/sealants to ensure the roof is watertight (mastics are applied with
and without reinforcement depending on the condition of the existing roof
detail), and, finally, a coating is applied to form a seamless, monolithic,
protective membrane.
Can every roof be restored?
Unfortunately, no. Roofs should be inspected to determine if they are good
candidates for restoration. The primary determining factor is the presence and
amount of entrenched water in the current system and its root cause. A good
rule of thumb is if less than 20% of the roof requires repairs to be made
sound, clean and dry, restoration is possible.

SMARTCOATTM Silicone versus Acrylic
Silicone coatings are primarily valued for their high solids chemistry.
A coating with 95% solids will remain relatively the same
thickness from application to cure whereas a coating
with only 55% solids, will be
approximately half as thick once
cured. This correlates to higher
Chemistry
warranty durations with less material or labor with silicone.
Ponding Water Application Temperature
Acrylic coatings are less expensive per gallon- for 10-year warranty durations acrylic restoration may be more cost effective.

Popular Restoration Systems & Warranties
