HOW TO USE CEDAR PLANKS
VERIFY
If you have verified that you have an active clothing moth infestation, including clothing moth eggs and larvae, move onto step 2. If you do not have an active infestation, move onto steps 3 and 4. Cedar Planks provide the lasting repellency you need to keep clothing moths away.
CLEAN AND ELIMINATE
Brushing: Hang garments outside or over the bathtub and vigorously brush
the garment inside and out, primarily in the places where you have found
indications of moth activity. This will dislodge eggs and larvae. If you go
this route, it is recommended to also do one of the additional options below.
Dry cleaning is probably the easiest, but not always the cheapest.
Dry Cleaning: This will kill all eggs, larvae, and adult moths.
Freezing: Hang clothes in a cold environment, 18° F or lower, for four or
more days. This will kill eggs, larvae and adult moths.
Heating: Hang clothing in a hot location that will reach temperatures of
120° F for at least an hour to kill any remaining moths.
Asphyxiation: We recommend this is performed by a professional. It is a
method where your clothing is bagged and then pumped full of carbon dioxide,
or another gas, displacing oxygen. Without oxygen, the moths die. This process
takes about a week.
HANG
Screw the metal hooks into the top of the planks and hang them in your closet. Disregard this step if you are placing the planks in drawers or sealed storage containers.
We recommend placing 1-4 planks, each of which should be 6 inches apart, in each location. In general, the more planks you use, the greater the effectiveness of repelling moths. Cedarwood naturally releases vapors that disrupt the mating cycle of clothing moths as well as their bodily functions. They become unable to pick up on pheromones, leaving them confused and disoriented. Drawers and sealed containers will hold the cedar vapor more effectively than in an open closet or room so you can place fewer planks in those smaller spaces.
RESTORE
Cedar Planks will effectively repel unwanted insects for up to 6 months, after which, the cedar aromas will be less noticeable to humans, and may be slightly less effective as a repellent of insects. To improve the efficacy, renew the aromas by lightly sanding the top layer of wood, or use Dr. Killigan’s Cedar Ward® cedar restoration spray (coming in 2023).
CEDAR PLANKS FAQs
WHERE COULD CLOTHING MOTHS RESIDE IN MY HOME?
While clothing moths like to hide in closets and drawers, but they can also be found in attics, basements, storage areas, bins and elsewhere. Clothing moths can be difficult to find because they like to hide within seams and pockets. Be meticulous in your search.
DO DR. KILLIGAN’S CEDAR PLANKS KILL MOTHS?
Cedar Planks do not kill moths but rather repels them. The oil from the wood gives off an aroma that moths do not like. The Cedar Planks prevent the adult moths from landing on your clothing and using the natural fibers for nests and a food source.
ARE THE PLANKS 100% CEDARWOOD?
Yes, Dr. Killigan’s Cedar Planks are made with 100% Eastern Red Cedar.
WILL THE CEDAR PLANKS STAIN MY CLOTHES?
Cedar Planks will not stain your clothing when placed near items in your closets or drawers.
ARE THERE OTHER BENEFITS TO HAVING CEDAR PLANKS IN MY HOME OUTSIDE OF MOTH
PREVENTION?
Yes, cedar planks can help to deodorize and freshen indoor environments, absorb moisture to prevent mildew, and repel insects.
TRIUMPH OVER MOTHS
