HOOKER BH13183 Blackheart Long Tube Headers
Thank you for choosing to use BLACKHEART headers on your vehicle. Hooker headers are designed with optimized components and geometry to ensure the highest level of fit and performance. Please read these instructions thoroughly before attempting the installation of these components.
PRE-INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
Check that the hardware package includes the following:
Qty. Description
- 12 3/8-16 x 1″ Header Bolts
- 2 Gaskets
If you are missing any hardware, please contact Technical Service at 1-866-464-6553.
-
NOTE: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SINCE THESE HEADERS HAVE 2-1/8” PRIMARIES CLEARANCES WILL BE TIGHT. A COMBINATION OF HEAT PROTECTION AND/OR REROUTING OF BRAKE AND FUEL LINES MAY BE NECESSARY. IT WILL ALSO BE NECESSARY TO USE A COMBINATION OF SPARK PLUG WIRE ENDS AND BOOTS (90° & STRAIGHT) FOR PROPER CLEARANCE AT THE SPARK PLUG. If needed, heat protection and spark plug wire accessories are available at www.holley.com
NOTE: Will not work with factory automatic transmission column shift linkage. Aftermarket automatic transmission column linkage or cable kits such as those offered by Lokar™ and others will have to be used if you wish to maintain a column-shifted linkage set-up in your vehicle. -
NOTE: Factory-style big block frame stands and motor mounts must be used to ensure proper engine locations and header fit.
-
NOTE: These headers are compatible with the factory manual transmission Z-bar/linkage. Will not work with factory air conditioning.
An automotive lift or a jack and jack stand will be required to safely raise and support the vehicle.
CAUTION! WORK ONLY ON A LEVEL SURFACE. USE JACKS /JACK STANDS OF SUFFICIENT CAPACITY TO LIFT AND SUPPORT YOUR VEHICLE. NEVER WORK UNDER A VEHICLE SUPPORTED BY A FLOOR OR BUMPER JACK.
INSTALLATION
- Disconnect the negative cable from the vehicle battery, if connected.
- Remove spark plugs and spark plug wires from the engine.
- Remove the engine oil dipstick tube.
- Remove the clutch Z-bar linkage from the frame if present.
- Remove any existing headers/exhaust manifolds from the engine.
- Using an automotive lift or floor jack, lift the entire vehicle or front of the vehicle a minimum of 36” off the ground.
- Separate the pitman arm from the steering center link, disconnect the power steering lines (if equipped) and the steering coupling at the column, and remove the steering box.
- Move the driver’s side header into position for installation from the bottom of the vehicle. Install the header gasket and start bolts enough to support the header (it should swing freely on the bolts).
- Reinstall the steering box at this time. Reattach the steering coupling, tighten mounting bolts, reattach the pitman arm to the center link (use a new cotter pin), and reconnect power steering lines (if equipped).
- Tighten the driver’s side header bolts at this time (starting in the center, and working outward).
- Move the passenger’s side header into position for installation from the bottom of the vehicle and install it onto the engine using the remaining gasket and header bolts. Tighten bolts (starting in the center and working outward).
- Verify that there is adequate clearance between fuel/brake lines. It is also recommended that heat insulation material be used on any lines that come near the header tubes, or that new fuel/brake lines be created that route the lines further away from the header tubes.
- Reinstall the engine oil dipstick tube, spark plugs/spark plug wires, and clutch Z-bar as needed.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
