General Information
Overview
Thank you for purchasing a post driver from
4x4PostDriver.com. This post driver has been
designed to drive 4×4 posts into the bottoms of rivers or lakes for making
docks. A pneumatic cylinder does all of the heavy lifting which results in
very little effort required by the operator. The unit can be operated off a
standard air compressor with as little as 60 psi available.
We have done our best to produce a high quality, easy to use product at a
reasonable cost that will help you get your project done with as little effort
as possible. The PAD04/PAD05XL will impress you with its ease of use,
durability, and value.
This user manual provides you with important information about your post
driver. It also points out some precautions which should be taken to ensure
proper operation, long service life, and personal safety while using.

Un-Packing
Carefully inspect the body of the post driver for burrs and/or sharp edges. This unit is prepared with a durable high gloss finish to prevent rust but sometimes this process produces burrs. We hand inspect every unit prior to shipping and remove any problems that we come across, but it is the owner’s responsibility to do a thorough inspection before field operation.
Unpack the unit and make sure you have all the following:
Assembly
Do not connect the unit to an air source until the assembly process is completed.
Begin by placing the post driver body on an appropriate work surface with adequate lighting. We recommend having someone available for assistance.
Insert the Safety Cover as shown.
Sometimes it will be easier to insert from one side or the other.
Place the air cylinder into position making sure the fittings are facing towards the push button valve of the post driver
With a lock washer on each screw, hand-thread all four of into the air cylinder.
Using the supplied Hex Wrench tighten all four screws.
These screws can work lose over time, so they must be periodically checked. A
thread-locking adhesive can be used on these as well.
Recheck screw tightness before each use
Finished product should look like this. Connect the two air tubes and the assembly is complete.
Finally connect the two airlines, and thread in the exhaust muffler and your assembly is complete.
Operation

Safety
The pneumatic cylinder that comes with this device is very powerful and
capable of serious injury. Operating at 90 psi, the cylinder can produce over
175 pounds of force. Do not allow any objects to cross the operating path of
the cylinder. Always disconnect the air source before servicing.
Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection while operating this unit.
Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating the post driver.
Distractions are liable to result in injury.
Never connect to an air source that can exceed 130 psi. Over pressurizing the
post driver may cause bursting, abnormal operation, breakage of the tool, or
serious injury.
Never use oxygen, carbon dioxide, or any bottled gas as an air source for this
tool. Such gases are capable of explosion and serious injury.
System Description
Posts
It is important to cut a wedge onto the end of the 4×4 pressure treated posts so that they will drive easier into the ground. This can be accomplished with a chainsaw, a radial arm saw, or a circular saw. Also, it is a good idea to measure your posts before you start driving. Most 4x4s will measure 3.5” x 3.5” but every now and then you will come across an oversized post. This could prove difficult to drive due to a tight fit inside the PAD04 post driver.
Getting Started
After the unit is fully assembled, you can connect to an air source and test
the operation. When you press the green button, you should hear the air
cylinder extend. When the button is released, you should hear the air cylinder
quickly and quietly retract.
This opening is what goes over the 4×4 post and is also where the air cylinder
travels. Never reach into this opening for any reason. The pneumatic cylinder
is very powerful and capable of serious injury.
To avoid serious injury, keep hands and arms clear of this opening.
Field Use
Operating the unit in the field couldn’t be easier. Once the post driver is
placed over the post, simply push the green button and the unit will
automatically raise. Release the button and the unit will fall and strike the
post. After a couple of strikes, most users quickly get the timing down and
can operate it like a pro.
