Planting Your Garden

  1. Add Water into the Water Tank

    • Add water until the water gauge reaches “Max”.
    • Use room temperature tap water or bottled distilled water. Do not use well water which may interfere with our nutrients, or softened water, as it contains levels of sodium usually harmful to plants.
    • When the water gauge indicates “Min”, water level is too low and you must add water and plant food. Refer to super plant food section for the proper water level and plant food solution mixture ratio. Generally, plant food and water should be added together once every two weeks or when water level is low.
  2.  Add Plant Food
Fill the bottles of Super Plant Food A and B fully with water, then shake until the Super Plant Food completely dissolves. Use the bottle cap as a measuring cup (5ml), each 5ml of mixed plant food solution A and B should be combined with 1 Litre water.

    • Do not overfeed! More isn’t better. Too much plant food may be harmful to your plants.
Tip: Typically, your plants will need new plant food every 2 weeks. Always top off water level when adding plant food solution. (For every 1 litre of water, add 5ml Super Plant Food A+5ml Super Plant Food B)
      Precautions:

    • Unmixed, unopened Plant Food Solution has a storage life of 2 years. Store at ambient temperature without exposure to sunlight.

    • After mixing with water, Plant Food Solution has a storage life of 5 months. Store at ambient temperature without exposure to sunlight.

    • Precipitation may occur. Treat this as a normal phenomenon.

    • Keep Plant Food Solution out of reach of children and pets.
For best results, use an EC meter to regulate nutrient strength and a pH meter to maintain pH between 5.0 and7.0inbloom-EU-ID-IG303B-Hydroponics-Growing-

  3. Preparing Your Seed Pods

    • Completely soak the grow sponges by placing them in a bowl of water for best effect.
    • Soak seeds in water for 6 hours, then place 2-3 seeds into each grow sponge. Ensure seeds are situated snuggly at the bottom of each grow sponge.
    • Fit the Grow Sponge into Grow Basket.
    • Insert grow sponge and grow basket into a pod on the grow deck, and cover each pod with a anti-algae sticker and then germination dome. Allow seeds time to germinate, ideally in a dark environment for best effect. For specific germination times, please refer to growing guide.
    • Remove germination domes after sprouts reach the height of the germination dome.
    • Grow domes may be reused/recycled.

Planting

  • After germination, choose to preserve the seedlings with the best growth and gently pull or cut out seedlings with poor growth. We recommend keeping one seedling per pod.
  • Gardens grow and look their best when tall plants are planted in the back, medium plants along the sides, and short plants in the front. If plants are all the same size, such as salad greens, they can be planted in any order.
  • Large plants such as tomatoes and peppers require more space to grow. Leave every other pod open to avoid overcrowding when working with such plants. Place grow baskets in each back pod, side pod, and in the center front pod. Place pod lids on the remaining openings to block sunlight from hitting the water in the tank directly.

Depth

  • Different sized seeds need to be placed at different depths in the grow sponge. Before inserting the seeds into the grow sponge, bore a hole of up to 1cm x 1cm down the middle of the grow sponge to best fit your specific seed size.
    Incubation(optional)

  • To help seeds grow better, seeds can be transplanted into the grow sponge after first an incubation period. Wrap seeds in between two moist thick paper towels and place into a sealed box, avoiding light exposure for 1-2 days.

  • Spray with water periodically if paper towels dry out during the process. After 1-2 days, transfer the sprouting seedlings with tweezers into the grow sponges and proceed to germinate process

  • Perfect Sprouting of Seedlings- Days 3-7

  • During the first 3-7 days, the following guidelines must be followed:

    • NO DIRECT LIGHT- Exposing your seeds to direct sunlight can burn the seeds as they are still sensitive. During the germination process, your seeds do not require growing light at all, so we recommend placing your Smart
    • Garden in a warm, dark environment that does not receive sunlight, or simply leave the LED Lamp turned off. Remember to cover your grow sponge with anti-algae stickers. They prevent algae growth by preventing light from hitting the grow sponge.
    • GROW SPONGE TEMPERATURE MUST BE AT 75-85 FAHRENHEIT – It is impossible for the seeds to sprout if the grow sponge temperature isn’t maintained within this range.
    • AIRFLOW- After the seedlings grow to reach the germination dome, remove the germination dome. Keep seedlings ventilated by placing them near an open window, or using a fan. Airflow is great for preventing diseases and mold, and supports the plant’s growth.
  • Maintaining Seedling Growth – Days 7-28

    • During this three-week period, please follow these steps carefully:
    • FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT – Turn on the Smart Lamp (vegetable grow mode default). As plants receive their energy from the LED lamp and enter into photosynthesis. Without sufficient lighting, a plant would not be able to produce the energy required to grow. The vegetable grow mode specifically contains blue light which promotes leaf growth.
  • TIP-Thinning Seedlings

    • Overcrowding of plants will result in some plants with stunted growth due to lack of sufficient light. To prevent this, thin down to one plant per pod to allow for enough light and air to support long term health. After thinning, your plant will spend the next few weeks growing a larger stem and plenty of leaves.
From Seedling to Maturity- Days 28 and beyond
  • WATER

    • Our self-watering Smart Garden automatically maintains ideal soil moisture, and only needs weekly check ups. Keep in mind, when growing fruiting or flowering plants, more water and plant food are required. Top off with water and plant food solution regularly to keep a water tank full.
  • AIRFLOW

    • Expose your plants to as much light as possible, and place in a well ventilated area to prevent algae growth.
  • FERTILIZE

    • By now, your seedlings will require plenty of nutrients and minerals, so you should re-energize them by adding plant food regularly (at least once 2 weeks). When topping off the water tank, add the correct ratio of water and plant food.
  • FRUITING & FLOWERING

    • When growing fruiting and flowering plants, switch to the flower & fruit mode. This mode emits more red light, promoting better flower & fruit growth. When flowers bloom, simulate pollination by tapping the base of the plant for 30 seconds or using a small toothbrush to vibrant the stems.
  • TIP-Transplant

    • As your plants mature, they require more space to keep growing. You can choose to replant your plants into larger pots, or transplant the plants to an outside environment. Once the plant has three sets of mature leaves, it’s ready to be transplanted into a larger container. We suggest using Grow Bags for a smooth transplant. Please note, it’s not necessary to remove plants from the biodegradable grow sponge during the transplant, as the biodegradable sponge will completely dissolve into the ground or into a larger pot over time. However, make sure to cut off the base of the grow sponge using a pair of scissors to allow for continuous root development.
  • TIP-Long-term Care

    • Remove any flowers from herbs
    • Removing the flowers from herbs impedes herbs from completing a full lifecycle, which forces them to continue growing for a longer period.
  • Lighting

    • The LED smart lamp automatically works in 16 hours on, 8 hours off cycles. The cycle starts immediately when Smart Garden is powered on. To reset the lighting cycle, turn off the Smart Garden, and then power it on at the time of the day when you want the cycle to start. Easy as that!
    • Keep the LED Smart Lamp 4-6” above the plants
    • Your plants love all the light they can get. When growing different types of plants together in one
    • Smart Garden, expect different growth patterns, shapes & sizes.
    • Basil is a classic example of a plant that sprouts within days and grows tall very quickly. If the Smart Lamp is raised just for Basil, it will become dominant and the other plants will not thrive. When it comes to Basil, remember to prune early and often.
  • Water

    • As plants mature, they start to use up more water. For best growth, keep water level topped off with the correct mix of water and Super Plant Food.
    • Municipal tap water works well in most areas, but if you have especially hard water or softened water, consider mixing bottled distilled water (50-50 at first) with your tap water for best results.
  • Prune

    • Pruning does not hurt your plants, it helps them. Pruning brings greater health and encourages dense, compact growth for bigger yields.
    • Meanwhile, tomatoes and peppers grow best with just one plant per pod. With shears, carefully cut out smaller seedlings, leaving one healthy plant per pod.
    • Never prune more than 1/3 of your plant. Pruning roots is not recommended.
  • Pollination
    Pollinating Tomatoes, Peppers and Eggplants

  • With tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, pollination is fairly simple and can be accomplished in a variety of methods, including:

    • Gently shaking or vibrating the plants or individual flowers a few times a week (daily is best) after flowers appear;
    • Using an electric toothbrush to vibrate the stem or individual flowers. Kids electric toothbrush-es are perfect and can be purchased for a few dollars each. This method is best for tougher pollinators like eggplants;
    • Directing a fan towards your Smart Garden. A fan blowing on your Smart Garden has many benefits, including increased pollination and ventilation.
  • Pollinating Cucumbers, Melons and Squash

    • With plants that have male and female flowers, we need to move the pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers. Many plants will produce a large amount of male flowers first, then the female flowers start to appear.
    • You can tell the difference between male and female flowers by studying them closely. Male flowers are smaller and you can often see the pollen as “dust” inside the flowers. Female flowers tend to be larger and often have a small, unfertilized fruit at their base. For example, with cucumbers, you can actually see a small ½ inch long cucumber at the base of the female flowers. If left unpollinated, this will drop off. If pollinated, it grows into a full sized fruit. With practice and observation, you’ll get good at telling the difference. To fertilize these plants, simply use a cotton swab or small artists paintbrush to move pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers.
    • This too takes some practice, but you’ll know when you are getting good as you start enjoying, literally, the fruits of your labors.

Plant care tips

  • Greens
    • Grow leafy greens at a temperature of 64 to 72 °F (18to22°C). Higher temperatures will decrease germination. For the most ripe vegetables, harvest your greens all at once 30 to 35 days after planting. If you prefer harvesting in phases, cut off the larger outer leaves first within the first 40 days. Any longer will lead to plant quality degradation.
  • Herbs
    • Grow herb plants at a temperature of 64 to 79 °F(18 to 26℃). Make sure to trim herbs often. It is usually feasible to harvest herbs after 3 weeks of planting. As a common standard, trim to herbs to at least two pairs of true leaves to for best growth. Herbs grow quickly and soon there will be more to harvest. Use sharp scissors to trim, but make sure to not tear the plant by pulling. Never allow herbs to grow so tall that they reach the height of the lamp as they are sensitive to burns.
  • Fruiting plants
    • Grow fruiting plants in warmer temperatures of up to 79 °F (26 °C). If multiple seeds germinate per pod, leave the healthiest seedling to grow and pull out the rest to ensure enough space for fruiting later. Once your plant flowers, pollinate it by hand in order to produce fruits. Pollinate by gently shaking the base of the plant or by transporting pollen from one blossom to the another using your finger or a brush.
  • Flowers
    • Flowers are easy. You should remove withered leaves or flowers for a more beautiful bouque. Expect flowers to initially bloom 50 days after planting. Decorative plants can be trimmed regularly to keep them full and low.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should the water be changed?

It is recommended to change the water once per week. Remember to unplug the power before changing the power, and add fresh plant food accordingly

What should I do if I find mold on the grow sponge?

During the early stage of planting, please ensure grow stickers are used to prevent light exposure and growth on grow sponges. To remove mold, spray the grow sponge with a liquid mixture of water and peroxide. Be careful to not touch the plant roots during this process.

Do the lights need to be turned on before the seeds germinate?

Seed germination does not require lighting as the seeds already have sufficient nutrients for the germination process. Turning on the lights at this time may lead to the growth of mold on the grow sponges. However, lights must be turned on immediately after the germination process so that plants can perform better photosynthesis.

When should I take off the grow dome?

Ideally grow domes should be removed 1-2 days after the plant has successfully germinated. Delay may cause plants to grow in a misshapen manner.

What is the use of the plastic rod?

When the plant grows, it may tilt due to its own weight. The plastic rod can effectively fix the plant and prevent it from tilting.

. My machine is turned ON, but the water pump is not working

Check the power cord is plugged in and connected to the pump Confirm the machine is turned ON and pump mode is turned ON The water pump automatically shut down when water levels are too low so please ensure water tank is full The water pump may be in an automatic sleeping state.

Why does the led lamp automatically turn off?

In order to simulate natural light, the led lamp will be turned off for 8 hours after every 16 hours of work, giving the machines and plants sufficient resting time.

Do I need to manually turn on the LED lamp after it automatically turns off?

No, as long as the lamp is automatically dormant when powered on, it will automatically start again after 8 hours.

What is the difference between Veg mode and Flower mode?

We scientifically adjust the ratio of red, blue, and white LED lights to provide an optimal environment for different types of plants and different stages of growth. Veg mode is more conducive to the growth of plant leaves and roots. Flower mode allows flowers and fruits to grow fuller. Tip: Veg mode should be used when the plant blooms or before fruiting.

Can I grow different plants at the same time?

It is not recommended to grow different plants at the same time. Plants come in various shapes and sizes. Larger plants may affect the absorption of light by smaller plants, causing smaller plants' growth to be stunted.

Must I use the power supply that came with the product?

You must use the power supply included with the product. Our power supply has ETL safety certification and we guarantee safe operation during the warranty period. If another power supply is used, it may cause overloading, short- circuiting, or other hidden safety dangers due to incompatibility.

What should I do if I are not using all the holes?

Holes that are not in use should be covered with a shading cover, otherwise green algae will grow in the water tank due to sunlight exposure.

What should I do if my plants do not grow?

Many factors such as temperature, humidity, nutrition, lighting, etc may interfere with plant growth. Please ensure that water is changed regularly and plant food solution is mixed proportionally. Additionally, ensure that lights are turned on for a sufficient amount of time. Finally, plants should be placed in a long-term stable and suitable temperature environment

What should I do if my seeds do not germinate?

Firstly, please choose high quality seeds as different seeds have different germination rates.
