- If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine (motor) and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally a warning of trouble.
- Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields when operating mower.
SLOPE OPERATION
Slopes are a major factor related to slip & fall accidents which can result in
severe injury. All slopes require extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a
slope, do not mow it
DO
- Mow across the face of slopes: never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.
- Remove obstacles such as rocks, tree limbs, etc.
- Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
DO NOT
- Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches or embankments. The operator could lose footing or balance.
- Do not trim excessively steep slopes.
- Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced footing could cause slipping.
CHILDREN
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of
children. Children are often attracted to the ma- chine and the mowing
activity. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them.
- Keep children out of the trimming area and under the watchful care of another responsible adult.
- Be alert and turn machine off if children enter the area.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE ADD OIL
Your lawnmower is shipped without oil in the engine. For type and grade of oil
to use, see “ENGINE” in the Maintenance section of this manual.
CAUTION : DO NOT overfill engine with oil, or it will smoke on startup.
- Be sure lawnmower is level
- Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.
- You receive a container of oil with the unit. Slowly pour the entire container down the oil fill spout into the engine.
- Insert and tighten dipstick.
IMPORTANT
- Check oil level before each use. Add oil if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.
- Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or each season. You may need to change the oil more often under dusty, dirty conditions. See “TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL” in the Maintenance section of this manual.
ADD GASOLINE
Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck. Do not overfill. Use fresh,
clean, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. Do not mix oil
with gasoline. Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30 days to
assure fuel fresh- ness.
CAUTION : Wipe off any spilled oil or fuel. Do not store, spill or use
gasoline near an oven flame.
CAUTION : Alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or
methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of
acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while
in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before
storage of 30 days or longer. Empty the gas tank, start the engine and let it
run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next season.
See Storage Instructions for additional information. Never use engine or
carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.

may be present during the initial use of the product and should be considered
normal.
- Be sure fuel valve is in the ON position.
- Move choke lever to ON (IN) position.
- Hold operator presence control bar down to the handle and pull starter handle quickly. Do not allow starter rope to snap back.
NOTE : The choke lever automatically begins moving to the OFF position when operator presence control bar is held down to handle
MOWING TIPS
CAUTION : Do not use de-thatcher blade attachments on your mower. Such
attachments are hazardous, will damage your mower and could void your
warranty.
- Under certain conditions, such as very tall grass, it may be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of grass clippings. It may also be necessary to reduce ground speed and/or run the lawn mower over the area a second time.
- For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut by overlapping previously cut path and mow slowly.
- For better grass bagging and most cut- ting conditions, the engine speed should be set in the FAST position.
- Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt and dust with use and catchers will collect less grass. To prevent this, regularly hose catcher off with water and let dry before using.
- Keep top of engine around starter clear and clean of grass clippings and chaff. This will help engine air flow and extend engine life.
MULCHING MOWING TIPS
IMPORTANT : For best performance, keep mower housing free of built-up
grass and trash. See “CLEANING” in the Maintenance section of this manual.
- The special mulching blade will recut the grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grass and not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn. Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will provide the best recuttina action of the hlades
- Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tends to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this time the grass has dried, yet the newly cut area will not be exposed to direct sunlight.
- For best results, adjust the lawn mower cut- ting height so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grass blades. If the lawn is overgrown it will be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of mulched grass. For extremely heavy grass, reduce your width of cut by overlapping previously cut path and mow slowly.
- Certain types of grass and grass conditions may require that an area be mulched a sec- ond time to completely hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow across (perpendicular) to the first cut path.
- Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow north to south one week then change to east to west the next week. This will heip prevent matting and graining of the lawn.
MAINTENANCE
- (if so equipped)
- Electric-Start mowers
- Power-Propelled mowers
- Use a scraper to clean under deck
- Change more often if operating under a heavy load or in high outdoor temperatures.
- Service more often it operating in dirty or dusty conditions.
- Replace blades more often when mowing in sandy soil.
- Charge 48 hours at end of season.
- And after each 5 hours of use.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value trom the warranty, operator must maintain unit as instructed in this manual. Some adjustments will need to be made periodically to properly maintain your unit. At least once a season, check to see if you should make any of the adjustments described in the Service and Adjustments section of this manual.\
- At least once a year, replace the spark plug, clean or replace air filter element and check blade for wear. A new spark plug and clean/new air filter element assure proper air-fuel mixture and help your engine run better and last longer.
- Follow the maintenance schedule in this manual.
BEFORE EACH USE
- Check engine oil
- Check for loose
LUBRICATION
Keep unit well lubricated
(See “LUBRICATION CHART”).
- Handle bracket mounting pins
- Spray lubricant
- See ENGINE in Maintenance section.
IMPORTANT: Do not oil or grease plastic wheel bearings. Viscous lubricants will attract dust and dirt that will shorten the life of the self- lubricating bearings. If you feel they must be lubricated, use only a dry, powdered graphite type lubricant sparingly.
LAWN MOWER
Always observe safety rules when per- forming any maintenance.
TIRES
- Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect control chemicals which can harm rubber.
- Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharp objects and other hazards that may cause tire damage.
BLADE CARE
For best results, blade must be kept sharp. Replace a bent or damaged blade.
CAUTION : Use only a replacement blade approved by the manufacturer of
your mower. Using a blade not approved by the manufacturer of your mower is
hazardous, could damage your mower and void your warranty.
TO REMOVE BLADE
-
Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with plug.
-
Turn lawn mower on its side. Make sure air filter and carburetor are up.

- Install the blade bolt with the lock washer and hardened washer into blade adapter and crankshaft.
- Use block of wood between blade and lawn mower housing and tighten the blade bolt, turning clockwise.
- The recommended tightening torque is 35-40 ft. Ibs. / 47-54 N-m.
IMPORTANT: Blade bolt is heat treated. If bolt needs replacing, replace only with approved bolt shown in the Repair Parts section of this manual.
- The recommended tightening torque is 35-40 ft. Ibs. / 47-54 N-m.
TO SHARPEN BLADE
NOTE : We do not recommend sharpening blade – but if you do, be sure the
blade is balanced. Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced. An
unbalanced blade will cause eventual damage to lawn mower or engine.
- The blade can be sharpened with a file or on a grinding wheel. Do not attempt to sharpen while on the mower.
- To check blade balance, drive a nail into a beam or wall. Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed. Place center to be of is balance the should tenant in. a horizontal position. If either end of the blade moves downward, sharpen the heavy end until the blade is balanced.
GRASS CATCHER
- The grass catcher may be hosed with water, but must be dry when used.
- Check your grass catcher often for damage or deterioration. Through normal use it will wear. If catcher needs replacing, replace only with approved replacement catcher shown in the Repair Parts section of this manual. Give the lawn mower model number when ordering.
ENGINE
Maintenance, repair, or replacement of the emission control devices and
systems, which are being done at the customers expense, may be performed by
any non-road engine repair establishment or individual. Warranty repairs must
be performed by an authorized engine manufacturer’s service outlet.
LUBRICATION
Use only high quality detergent oil rated with AP I service classification SG-
SL. Select the oil’s SAE viscosity grade according to your expected operating
temperature.
NOTE
Multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30 etc.) improve starting in cold weather,
and you should check your engine oil level frequently to avoid possible engine
damage from running low on oil.
Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or at least once a year if
the lawn mower is not used for 25 hours in one year.
Check the crankcase oil level before starting the engine and after each five
(5) hours of continuous use. Tighten oil plug securely each time you check the
oil level.
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
NOTE : Before tipping lawn mower to drain oil, empty fuel tank by running
engine until fuel tank is empty.
- Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with plug.

When lawn mower is to be stored for a period of time, clean it thoroughly,
remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in a clean, dry area.
- Clean entire lawn mower (See “CLEANING” in the Maintenance section of this manual).
- Lubricate as shown in the Maintenance section of this manual.
- Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws, and pins are securely fastened. Inspect moving parts for damage, breakage and wear. Replace if necessary.
- Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces; sand lightly before painting.
HANDLE
You can fold your lawn mower handle for storage.
-
Squeeze the bottom ends of the lower handle toward each other until the lower handle clears the handle bracket, then move handle forward.
-
Loosen upper handle mounting bolts enough to allow upper handle to be folded back.
IMPORTANT : When folding the handle for storage or transportation, be sure to fold the handle as shown or you may damage the control cables.- When setting up your handle from the storage position, the lower handle will automatically lock into the mowing posi- tion.
ENGINE
Maintenance, repair, or replacement of the emission control devices and
systems, which are being done at the customers expense, may be performed by
any non-road engine repair establishment or individual. Warranty repairs must
be performed by an authorized engine manufacturer’s service outlet.
FUEL SYSTEM
IMPORTANT : It is important to prevent gum deposits from forming in
essential fuel system parts such as carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose or tank
during storage. Also, alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol
or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of
acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while
in storage.
- Empty the fuel tank by starting the engine and letting it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty.
- Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.
- Use fresh fuel next season.
NOTE : Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container. Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container. Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor. Do not empty the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.
