WATER SENSOR AND SWITCH DIAGRAM
PLACEMENT AND SENSING
CAUTION
Do not submerge the sensor in water.
Wall Mounting
The device can be installed on a wall while using the optional cable sensor.
NOTE:
For WiFi operation, the device cannot be mounted inside a metal box.
Floor Placement
The device can be placed on the floor using the on-device water-sensing
contacts and the optional cable sensor.
Optional Cable Sensor
- To install the cable sensor, remove the plug at the bottom of the device and plug in the cable sensor.
- Accessory cable sensors (WLD3CABLE sold separately) can be connected to extend the cable and increase the water sensing area. The entire length of the cable is a water sensor.
NOTE:
The cable sensor jack is NOT for plugging in an adapter. Doing so could damage
the water sensor.
INSTALLATION
Wire Device
L2 WiFi Water Sensor and Switch can be wired to 24V equipment so that when
water is sensed, the sensor either opens or closes a circuit. Typical
applications include preventing HVAC condensation pan overflow, turning on
water pump when water is sensed, etc. Connect wiring as shown in the following
wiring diagrams. Wires may be extended if needed using the provided wiring
nuts.
Table 1. Wiring Function
- C wire is optional or not used on some thermostats.
- System types vary. Wire the W, G, etc. as normal from the thermostat to the HVAC.
- If there are two compressor stages (Y1 and Y2) use the diagram in Figure 6 rather than this diagram diagram.
- If the system is zoned with a zone panel and dampers, use the zoning diagrams.
Fig. 5. L2 locks out the compressor when water is detected on a single-stage compressor (single-zone system).
- C wire is optional or not used on some thermostats.
- The W, Y, G, etc. Wires match as normal from thermostat to HVAC.
- If the display is powered by C, the thermostat will be blank during the lockout. If the thermostat is WiFi it will not be accessible on the app during the lockout.
- If the system is zoned with a zone panel and dampers, use the zoning diagrams.
Note: Use caution if locking out heating in locations in which pipes could freeze.
Fig. 6. L2 locks out heating/cooling when water is detected in 2 compressor stages (single zone system).
- System types vary. Wire the W, G, etc. as normal from the equipment terminals on the zone panel to the HVAC.
- If there are two compressor stages (Y1 and Y2) use the diagram in Figure 8 rather than this diagram.
Fig. 7. L2 locks out the compressor when water is detected on a single-stage compressor (multi-zone system).
- System types vary. Wire the W, Y, Y2, G, etc. as normal from the equipment terminals on the zone panel to the HVAC.
Fig. 8. L2 locks out heating/cooling when water is detected in 2 compressor stages (multi-zone system).
-
The R, C, W, Y, G, etc. wires (not shown) match as normal from EIM to HVAC.
-
The L2 can be wired to any set of S (S1, S2, S3, S4) on EIM. The ISU settings on the thermostat allow you to choose which S terminals are used for water leak or full drain pan alerts.
-
T10+ with EIM allows you to lock out heat and cool for a full drain pan or lock out a humidifier for a water leak alert. Prestige with EIM allows you to lock out heat and cool for a system shut-down alert or lockout humidifier for a water leak alert.

When green and orange wires are used, set the dry contact alert on the thermostat to normally closed. The installer could alternately use the Green and White wires and set the dry contact alert as normally open.

This could be used to detect water overflow from a clogged drain line.
- R and DHUM from the dehumidifier go to the dehumidity control as normal.
Fig. 10. L2 locks out DR65, DR90, or DR120 dehumidifier when water is detected.
- The terminal block shown here is used on residing HE150, HE250, and HE300 humidifiers. The HE300 has a built-in transformer and doesn’t require a transformer power in wires to the humidifier.
- See the humidifier install guide for humidistat wiring and wiring to “equipment.”
- If an optional sail switch or current sensing relay is not used, the green wire from the L2 goes directly to the humidifier.
Fig. 11. L2 locks out an advanced humidifier when a water leak is detected.
- See the HM750 humidifier install guide for humidistat wiring.
- If an optional sail switch or current sensing relay is not used, the green wire from the L2 goes directly to the upper ap terminal at the HM750 humidifier.
Fig. 12. L2 locks out the HM750 steam humidifier when a water leak is detected.
- Line voltage wiring (including ground wire not shown) must meet local code.
- A 24-vac transformer and relay are needed when controlling a line voltage load with an L2. Resideo offers single-pole and double-pole R8222 relays. Verify switch rating meets the load of the line voltage device.
- If line voltage device should be de-energized when a water leak is detected and energized when a water leak is not detected, use 2 on an SPDT relay rather than 3.

TEST MODE
In test mode, the alarm will sound and switches will change position as described below.
Enter Test Mode
- Press the sensor button three times until the LED blinks red.
- To exit test mode and return to normal function, press the Sensor button 3 more times. The L2 will also exit test mode by itself after 30 minutes.
This feature will not function during
- An active alarm.
- A Firmware update (white light blinking).
NOTE: During test mode, there is no WiFi communication to the L2 Water Leak and Freeze Detector.
WHEN A LEAK IS DETECTED
To Silence Alerts
- Press the sensor’s button or tap the mute button in the app to mute the siren.
- After you’ve addressed the cause of the alert, remove the sensor and cable sensor from the water and wipe dry.
TROUBLESHOOTING
-
Device not Powering On
Check wiring connections and ensure wires are connected to the proper terminals. -
Bluetooth Pairing Failed
If Bluetooth pairing fails at any stage, perform a factory rest. -
Factory Reset
Press the button for 1s to wake up the device (solid blue LED). Then press and hold the button for 10 s (solid orange LED). Two beeps and a solid red LED show reset in progress. Once the LED is off, reset is complete.
