WARNING
At the time of manufattur this water heater was provid- ed with a
combination temperature-pressures relief valve certified by a nationally
recognized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of production
of listed equipment or materials, as meeting the requirements for Relief
Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, and the
latest edition of ANSI 221.22 and the code requirements of ASME. If replaced,
the valve must meet the requirements of local codes, but not less than a
combination temperature and pressure relief valve certified as meeting the
requirements for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water
Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally rec- ognized testing laboratory
that maintains periodic
inspection of production of listed equipment or materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure not to exceed the marked
hydrostatic working pressure of the water heater (150 ibs./sq. in.) and a
discharge capacity not less than the water heater input rate as shown on the
model rating plate. (Electric heaters – watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a temperature-
pressure relief valve complying with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve
model different from the one furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satis- fied by the instafler
or end user of the water heater with a locally prescribed temperature-pressure
relief vatve installed in the designated opening in the water heater in place
of the factory furnished valve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not be removed
from it’s designated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed directly into the
fitting of the water heater designated for the relief valve. Position the
valve downward and provide tubing so that any discharge will exit only within
6 inches above, or at any distance below the structural floor. Be certain that
no contact is made with any live electrical part. The discharge opening must
not be blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive length,
over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows can cause restriction and reduce
the discharge capacity of the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between the relief valve and the
tank. Do not connect tubing directly to discharge drain unless a 6″ air gap is
provided.
Yo prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or property dam- age, the relief
valve must be allowed to discharge water in quantities should circumstances
demand. If the dis- charge pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable
means, the water flow may cause property damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
- Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other restrictions.
- Must not be plugged or blocked.
- Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
- Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dis- charge pipe.
- Must terminate at an adequate drain.
- Must not have any valve between the relief valve and tank.
WARNING
A gas water heater cannot operate properly without the correct amount of air
for combustion. Do not install in a confined area such a closet, unless you
provide air as shown In the “Facts to Consider About the Location” sec- tion.
Never obstruct the flow of ventilation air. If you have any doubts or
questions at all, call your gas company. Failure to provide the proper amount
of combustion air can result in a fire or explosion and can cause DEATH
SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
WARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to produce hot water.
Water heated to a temperaturo which will satisfy clothes washing, dish
washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently injure you upon
contact. Some people are more likely to be permanently injured by hot water
than others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or
physicallylmentally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits
into one of these groups or if there is a local code or state law requiring a
certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take special
precautions. In addition to using the lowest possible temperature setting that
satisfies your hot water needs, a means such as a mixing valve, should be used
at the hot water taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing
valves are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manufac-
turers instructions for installation of the valves. Before changing the
factory setting on the thermostat, reed the
“Temperature Regulation” section in this manual.
WARNING
Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correction before further use.
Turn “OFF” gas to water heater and leave “OFF” until repairs are made,
becausefailure to correct the cause of the sooting can result in a fire or
explosion causing DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
WARNING
BEFORE LIGHTING [PROPANE (L.P.) GAS WATER HEATERS]: Propane (I-R) gas is
heavier than air. Should there be a leak in the system, the gas will settle
near the ground. Basements, crawl spaces, skirted areas under mobile homes
(even when ventilated), closets and areas below ground level will serve as
pockets for the accumulation of this gas. Before attempting to light or
relight the water heater’s pilot or turning on a nearby electrical light
switch, be absolutely sure there is no accumulated gas in the area. Search for
odor of gas by sniffing at ground level in the vicinity of the appliance. If
odor is detected, follow steps indicated at “For Your Safety” on the cover
page of this manual then leave the premises.
WARNING
This water heater must not be installed directly on carpeting.
Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood panel beneath the appliance
extending beyond the full width and depth of the appliance by at least 3
inches (76.2mm) in any direction, or if the appliance is installed in an
alcove or closet, the entire floor must be covered by the panel. Failure to
heed this warning may result in a fire hazard.
WARNING
VENT DAMPERS – Any vent damper, whether it is operated thermally or otherwise
must be removed if its use inhibits proper drafting of the water heater.
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers: Gas-fired water heaters having thermal
efficiency in excess of 80% may )roduce a relatively low flue gas temperature.
Such tem- _atures may not be high enough to properly open ther_ally operated
vent dampers. This would cause spillage of flue gases and may cause carbon
monoxide poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as com- plying with the
latest edition of American National Standard ANSI Z21.68 (ANSI Z21.66 & 67,
respectively, cover electrically and mechanically actuated vent dampers).
Before installation of any vent damper, consult your local Sears Service
Center or the gas utility for fur- ther information.
WARNING
- The appliance and its individual shutoff vaive must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of the gas system at test pressures in excess of ½ pound per square inch (3.5kPa).
- The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply pip- ing system by closing its individual manual shutoff valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping sys- tem at test pressures equal or less than _ pound per square inch (3.SkPa).
WARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may occur if air for
combustion contains certain chemical vapors. Spray can propellants, cleaning
solvents, refrigerator and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool
chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach, and process chemicals
are typical compounds which are potentially corrosive.
WARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systems may present a serious heath risk or
asphyxiation.
WAIRNING
The water heater with draft hood installed must be prop-erly vented to a
chimney which terminates outdoors.
Never operate the water heater unlessit is vented.to the outdoors and has
adequate air supply to avoid risks of improper operation, explosionor
asphyxiation.
WARNING
Minimum clearances between the water heater and com- bustlhleconstruction are
I” at the sidesand rear, 4″ at the front, and 6″ from the vent pipe. Clearance
from the top of the jacket is 18″ on most models. Note that a lesser dimension
may be allowed on some models. Refer to the label on the water heater adjacent
to the gas control valve for all clearances.
WARNING
Do not use this appliance if any part of it hasbeen under water. Immediately
call a Sears Service Technician to inspect the appliance and to replace the
gas control or any I part of the burner system which hasbeen under water .
WARNING
HYDROGEN GAS:Hydrogen gascanbe producedin a hot water system that hasnot been
usedfor a long period of time (generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is
extremely, flammable and explosive. To prevent the possibility of inlury under
these conditions,we recommend the hot water faucet be opened for several
minutes at the kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which are
connected to the hot water system are used (such as a dishwasher or washing
machine). If hydrogen gas,is present, there will probablybe an unusualsound
simlar to escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet is opened. There
must be no smoking or open flame near the faucet at the time it is open.
WARNING
INSULATING JACKETS: When installing an external water heater insulationjacket
on a gaswater heater:
- DO NOT cevet”the temperature-pressure relief valve.
- DO NOT put insulation over any part of the top of the gaswater heater.
- DO NOT put insulationover the gascontrol valve or gas control valve/burner cover, or any access areas to the burner.
- DO NOT let insulation around the g._ water heater to get within 8 inches of the floor (mr must get to the burner).
- DO NOT cover or remove operating !nstructions, and safetyrelated warning labelsand materials affixed to the water heater.
Failure to heed this _nll result in the possibilityof a fire or explosion.
CATION
WATER HEATER EVENTUALLY LEAK: installation of the water heater mustbe
accomplished in sucha manner that if the tank or any connectionsshouldleak, the
flow of water will not causedamage to the structure. For this
reason, it is not advisableto install the water heater mannr attic or upper
floor. When suchlocationscannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan should be
installed under the water heater. Drean pans are available at your local Sears
store. Sucha drain pan must be not greater than 1½inches deep, have a minimum
length and width of at least 2 inches greater than the water heater dimensions
and must be piped to an adequate drain. The pan must not restrict combustion
air flow. Under no circumstances is the man.ufactureror Sears to be held
liable for water damage m connectionwith this water heater.

-
Attach a hose to the water heater drain valve and put the other end in a floor drain or outdoors. Open the water heater drain valve. Open a nearby hot water faucet which will relieve pressure in the water heater and speed draining. WARNING
The water passing out of the drain valve may be extremely hot. To avoid beingscalded, make sure all connectionsare] tight and that the water tlow is directed away from any person. -
Disconnect the vent pipe from the draft hood where they connect to the water heater. In most installations the vent pipe can be lifted off after any screw or other attached devices are removed. Dispose of the draft hood. The new water heater has the draft hood which must be used for proper operation.
-
a. If you have copper piping to the water heater, the two copper water pipes can be cut with a hacksaw approximately 4″ away from where they connect to the water heater, This will avoid cutting off the pipes too short. Additional cuts can be made later if necessary. Disconnect the temperature-pressure relief valve drain line, When the water heater is drained, disconnect the hose from the drain valve. Close the drain valve. The water heater is now completely disconnected and ready to be removed. 6. b. If you have galvanized pipe to the water heater, loosen the two galvanized pipes with a pipe wrench at the union in each line. Also disconnect the piping remain- ing to the water heater. These pieces should be saved since they may be need- ed when reconnecting the new water heater. Disconnect the temperature-pres- sure relief valve drain line. When the water heater is drained, disconnect the hose from the drain valve. Close the drain valve. The water heater is now completely disconnected and ready to be removed. CAUTION
Mineral buddupor sedge accumulatedin the old water heater. This causesthe water heater to bemuch heavier than normal and this residue, if spilledout, could causestaining.
Facts to Consider About the Location
You should carefully choose an indoor location for the new water heater,
because the placement is a very important consid- eration for the safety of
the occupants in the building and for the most economical use of the
appliance. This water heater is not for use in mobile homes or outdoor
installation.
Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water heater in a new
location, the following critical points must be observed.
- The location selected should be indoors as close as practical to the gas vent or chimney to which the water heater vent is going to be connected, and as centralized with the water pip-ing system as possible. The water heater, as all water heaters, will eventually leak. Do not install without adequate drainage provisions where water flow will cause damage.
CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of the water heater must be
accomplished in such a manner that if the tank or any connections should leak,
the flow of water will not cause damage to the structure. For this reason, it
is not advisable to install the water heater in an attic or upper floor. When
such locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan should be installed
under the water heater. Drain pans are avail- able at your focal Sears store.
Such a drain pan must be not greater than 1’/ inches deep, have a minimum
length and width of at least 2 inches greater than the water heater dimensions
and must be piped to an adequate drain. The pan must not restrict combustion
air flow. Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or Sears to be held
liable for any water damage in connection with this water heater.
WARNING
INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS (VAPORS) ARE LIKELY TO BE
PRESENT OR STORED (GARAGES, STORAGE, AND UTILITY AREAS, ETC):
Fiammiable liquids (such as gasoline, solvents, propane (LP) or butane, etc.),
all of which emit flammable vapors, may be improperly stored or used in such
areas. The gas water heater pilot light or main burner can ignite such vapors.
The resulting flashback and fire can cause death or serious burns to anyone in
the area, as well as property damage.
If installation in such areas is your only option, then the installa- tion
must be accomplished in a way that the pilot flame and main burner flame are
elevated from the floor at least 18 inches. While this may reduce the chances
of flammable vapors from a floor spill being ignited, gasoline and other
flammable substances should never be stored or used in the same room or area
con- taining a gas water heater or other open flame or spark produc- ing
appliance.
NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air currents from other areas of
the structure to the appliance.
WARNING
Propellants of aerosol sprays and volatile compounds, (clean- ers, chlorine
based chemicals, refrigerants, etc.) in addition to being highly flammable in
many cases, will also change to cor- rosive hydrochloric acid when exposed to
the combustion products of the water heater. The results can be hazardous, and
also cause product failure.
- The location selection must provide adequate clearances for servicing and proper operation of the water heater.
WARNING
This water heater must not be installed directly on carpeting.
Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood panel beneath the appliance
extendingbe.yondthe full width and depth of the appliance by at least 3
inches(76.2mm) in any direction,or if the applianceis installedin an alcoveor
closet, the entire floor mustbe coveredby the panel.Failureto heed this
warning may result inafire hazard.
WARNING
Minimum clearances between the water heater and combustlble construction are
I” at the sides and mar, 4″ at the front, and 6″ fromthe vent
pipe.Clearancefromthe top of the acketis 18″onmostmodelsNote that a lesser
dimension may be allowed on some models. Referto the label onthe water
heateradjacentto the gascontrolvalvefor all clearance.
WARNING
A gas water heater cannot operate properly with out the correct amount of
airfor combustion.Do not installin a confined areasucha dosot, unless you
provide air as shown in the “Facts to Considerab out the
Location”section.Never obstruct the flowof ventilation air. If you have any
doubts or questionsat all, call your gas company.Failure to provide the prope
ramount of combustion air can result in a fire or explosion and can cause
DEATH,SERIOUS BODILY INJUR OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
WARNING
If this water heater will be used in beauty shops, barber shops, cleaning
establishments, or self-service laundries with dry cleaning equipment, it is
imperative that the water heater or water heaters be installed so that
combustion and ventilation air be taken from outside these areas. Refer to the
“Facts to Consider About the Location” section of this manual and also the
latest edition of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.!, also referred to as
NFPA 54 for specifics provided concerning air required.
Combustion Air and Ventilation for Appliances Located in Unconfined Spaces
Unconfined Space is a space whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu per hour of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that space. Rooms communicating directly with the space in which the appliances are installed, chrough openings not furnished with doors, are considered a art of the unconfined space fn unconfined spaces in buildings, infiltration may be adequate to provide air for combustion, ventilation and dilution of flue gases. However, in buildings of tight construction (for example, weather stripping, heavily insulated, caulked, vapor barrier, etc.), additional air may need to be provided using the methods described in Combustion Air and Ventilation for Appliances Located in Confined Spaces, b.

The minimum short side dimension of rectangular air ducts shall not be less than 3″. (See Figure 5.) -
Louvers and Grilles: In calculating free area, consideration shall be given to the blocking effect of louvers, grilles or screens protecting openings. Screens used shall not be smaller than 4″ mesh. If the free area through a design of louver or grille is known, it should be used in calculating the size open- ing required to provide the free area specified. If the design and free area is not known, it may be assumed that wood lou- vers will be 20-25 percent free area and metal louvers and grilles will have 60-75 percent free area. Louvers and grilles shall be fixed in the open position or interlocked with the equipment so that they are opened automatically during equipment operation.
-
Special Conditions Created by Mechanical Exhausting or Fireplaces: Operation of exhaust fans, ventilation systems, clothes dryers or fireplaces may create conditions requirin special attention to avoid unsatisfactory operation of installed gas utilization equipment.
Water Piping
WARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water
heated to a temperature which will satisfy clothes washing, dish washing, and
other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently injure you upon contact. Some
peo- ple are more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than others.
These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physical- tyimentally
handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits into one of these
groups or if there is a local code or state law requiring a certain
temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take special
precautions. In addition to using the lowest possible temperature setting that
satisfies your hot water needs, a means such as a mixing valve, should be used
at the hot water taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing
valves are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow man-
ufacturers instructions for installation of the valves. Before changing the
factory setting on the thermostat, read the “Temperature Regulation” section
in this manual.
This water heater shall not be connected to any heating systems or
component(s) used with a non-potable water heating appliance.
If a water heater is installed in a closed water supply system; such as one
having a back-flow preventer, check valve, water meter with a check valve,
etc… in the cold water supply; means shall be provided to control thermal
expansion. Ceneact the local utility or local Sears Service Center on how to
control this situation.
NOTE: To protect against untimely corrosion of hot and cold water erings,
it is strongly recommended that di-elec- tric unions or couplings be installed
on this water heater when connected to copper pipe.
The illustration shows the attachment of the water piping to the water heater.
The water heater is equipped with 4″ water con- nections.
NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an ter before attaching
the adapter to the cold water inlet one tion. Do not solder the cold water
supply line directly to the cold water inlet. It will harm the dip tube and
damage the tank.
- Look at the top cover of the water heater. The water outlet is marked hot. Put two or three turns of teflon tape around the threaded end of the threaded-to-sweat coupling and around both ends of the 4″ threaded nipple. Using flexible connec- tors, connect the hot water pipe to the hot water outlet on the water heater.
- Look at the top cover of the water heater. The cold water inlet is marked cold. Put two or three turns of teflon tape around the threaded end of the threaded-to-sweat coupling and around both ends of the 4″ threaded nipple. Usin ext ble connectors, connect the cold water pipe to the cold water inlet of the water heater.
NOTE: This water heater is super insulated to minimize heat loss from the tank. Further reduction in heat loss can be accomplished by insulating the hot water lines from the water heater.
Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve
WARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided with a
combination temperature-pressures relief valve certified by a nationally
recognized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of production
of listed equipment or mate- rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief
Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, and the
latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require- ments of ASME. ff
replaced, the valve must meet the require- ments of local codes, but not less
than a combination tempera- ture and pressure relief valve certified as
meeting the require- ments for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices
for Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recog- nized testing
laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed
equipment or materials.
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a temperature-
pressure relief valve comptying with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve
model different from the one furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satisfied by the installer or
end user of the water heater with a locally pre- scribed temperature-pressure
relief valve installed in the desig- nated opening in the water heater in
piace of the factory fur- nished valve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not be removed
from it’s designated opening or plugged.
The She erature: pressure relief valve must be installed directly into the
fitting of the water heater designated for the relief valve.
Position the valve downward and provide tubing so that any dis- charge will
exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance below the structural
floor. Be certain that no contact is made with any live electrical part. The
discharge opening must not be blocked or reduced in size under any
circumstances. Excessive length, over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows
can cause restriction and reduce the discharge capacity of the valve.
No yalve or other obstruction is to be placed between the relief valve and the
tank. Do not connect tubing directly to discharge drain unless a 6″ air gap is
provided. To prevent bodily injury, haz- ard to life, or property damage, the
refief valve must be allowed
to discharge water in quantities should circumstances demand. If the discharge
pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable means, the water flow may
cause property damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
- Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of thevalve, or have any reducing couplings or other restrictions.
- Must not be plugged or blocked.
- Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
- Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dischargepipe.
- Must terminate at an adequate drain.
- Must not have any valve between the relief valve and tank.
WARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually operated at least once
a year. Caution should be taken to ensure that (1) no one is in front of or
around the outlet of the temperature-pressure relief valve discharge line, and
(2) the water manually discharged will not cause any bodily injury or property
damage because the water may be extremely hot.
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely reset and
continues to release water, immediately close the cold water inlet to the
water heater, follow the draining instructions, and replace the temperature-
pressure retief valve with a new one. RELIEF VALVE OPENING
At the time of manufacture, this water heater was provided with a combination
tem- perature-pressure relief valve listed as complying with the standard for
relief valves and automatic gas shut-off devices for hot water supply systems,
ANS! 221.22. For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not
be removed from its des- ignated point of installation or plugged. four local
jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a temperature-pressure
relief valve complying with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve mode!
differ- ent from the one furnished with the water heater. Compliance with such
focal requirements must be satisfied by the installer or end user of the water
heater with a locally prescribed cemperature-pressure relief valve
installed in the designated opening in the water heater.
See manual heading -““Temperature-Pressure Relief Valves” for installation and
mainte- nance of relief valve, discharge line, and other safety precautions.
Filling the Water Heater
CAUTION
Never use this water heater unless it is completely filled with water. To
prevent damage to the tank, the tank must be filled with water. Water must
flow from the hot water faucet before turning “ON” gas to the water heater.
To fill the water heater with water:
-
Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of the water heater.
-
Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open when the water heater is in use. -
To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run until a constant flow is obtained. This will lec air out of che water heater and the piping.
-
Check all new water piping for leaks. Repair as needed.
Venting
WARNING
VENT DAMPERS – Any vent damper, whether it is operated thermally or otherwise
must be removed if its use inhibits prop- er drafting of the water heater.
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers: Gas-fired water heaters having thermal
efficiency in excess of 80% may produce a rela- tively low flue gas
temperature. Such temperatures may not be high enough to properly open
thermally operated vent dampers. This would cause spillage of flue gases and
may cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as complying with the latest
edition of American National Standard ANSI 221.68 (ANSI Z21.66 & 67,
respectively, cover electrically and mechanically actuated vent dampers).
Before installation of any vent damper, consult your local Sears Service
Center or the gas utility for further information.
WARNING
To insure proper venting of this gas-fired water heater, the correct vent pipe
diameter must be utilized. Any additions or deletions of other gas appliances
on a common vent with this water heater may adversely affect the operation of
the water heater. Consult the local Sears Service Center or gas utility if any
such changes are planned.
For proper venting in certain installations, a larger diameter vent pipe may
be necessary. Due to great variances in installations, unforeseeable by the
manufacturer of the water heater, you must consult your gas company to aid you
in determining the proper
venting for your water heater from the vent tables in the latest edition of
the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1, also referred to as NFPA 54.
Check the venting system for signs of obstruction or deteriora- tion and
replace if needed,
The combustion and ventilation air flow must not be obstructed.
WARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systems may present a serious health risk or
asphyxiation.
- Place the draft hood legs in the receiving holes on the top of the water heater. The legs will snap in the holes to give a ught fit.
- Place the vent pipe over the draft hood. With the vent pipe in position, drill a smail hole through both the vent pipe and draft hood. Secure them together with a sheet metal screw.
WARNING
The water heater with draft hood installed must be properly vented to a
chimney which terminates outdoors. Never oper- ate the water heater unless it
is vented to the outdoors and has adequate air supply to avoid risks of
improper operation, explo- sion or asphyxiation.
WARNING
The vent pipe from the water heater must be no less than the diameter of the
draft hood outiet on the water heater, and must slope upward to the chimney at
least ‘inch per linear foot.
All vent gases must be completely vented to the outdoors of the structure
(dwelling). Install only the draft hood provided with the new water heater and
no other draft hood.
Vent pipes must be secured at each joint with sheet metal screws. There must
be a minimum of 6″ clearance between single wall vent pipe and any combustible
material. Fill and seal any clear- ance between single wall vent pipe and
combustible material with mortar mix, cement, or other noncombustible
substance.
For other than single wall, follow vent pipe manufacturer’s clear- ance
specifications. To insure a tight fit of the vent pipe in a brick chimney,
seal around the vent pipe with mortar mix cement.
A WARNING
Failure to have required clearances between vent piping and
combustible material will result in a fire hazard.
WARNING
Be sure vent pipe is properly connected to escape of dangerous flue gases
which could cause deadly asphyxiation.
Gas Piping
WARNING
Make sure the gas supplied is the same type listed on the model rating plate.
The inlet gas pressure must not exceed 10.5 in. water column (2.6kPa) for
natural gas or 13 in. water column (3.2kPa) for propane (L.P) gas. The minimum
inlet gas pressure listed on the model rating plate is for the pur- pose of
input adjustment.
WARNING
if the gas control valve is subjected to pressures exceeding ‘A pound per
square inch (3.5kPa), the damage to the gas con- trol valve could result in a
fire or explosion from leaking gas.
WARNING
If the main gas line shutoff serving all gas appliances is used, also turn
“OFF” the gas at each appliance. Leave all gas appii- ances shut off until the
water heater installation is complete.
A gas line of sufficient size must be run to the water heater.
Consult the latest edition of National Fuel Gas Code ANSI 2223.1, also
referred to as NFPA 54 and the gas company con- cerning pipe size.
There must be:
- A readily accessible manual shut off valve in the gas supply line serving the water hearer, and
- A drip leg (sediment trap) ahead of the gas control valve to help prevent dic and foreign materials from entering the gas control valve,
- A flexible gas connector or 2 ground joint union between the shutoff valve and control valve to permit servicing of the unit.
Be sure to check all the gas piping for leaks before lighting the water
heater. Use a soapy water solution, not a match or open flame. Rinse off soapy
solution and wipe dry.
Standard Models are for installation up to 3,300 feet above sea level.
High Altitude Models are for installation from 3,300 to 5,500 feet above sea
level.
If a standard model is installed above 3,300 feet or a high altitude model is
installed above 5,500 feet, the input rating must be reduced at the rate of 4
percent for each 1,000 feet above sea level.
Contact your local Sears Service Center or gas utility for furcher
information.
WARNING
The appliance and its gasconnection must be leak tested beforeplacingthe
appliance inoperation.
WARNING
- The appliance and its individual shutoff vaive must be discon- nected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of the gas system at test pressures in excess of pound per square inch (3.5kPa).
- The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply piping sys- tem by closing its individual manual shutoff valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pres- sures equal or less than 4 pound per square inch (3.5kPa).
WARNING
Use pipe joint compound or teflon tape marked as being resistant to the action
of petroleum [Propane (L.P)] gases.
SEDIMENT TRAP
A sediment trap shall be installed as close to the inlet of the water heater
as practical at che time of water heater installation.
The sediment trap shall be either a tee fitting with a capped nip- ple in the
bottom outlet or other device recognized as an effec- tive sediment trap. If a
tee fitting is used, it shall be installed in conformance with one of the
methods of installation shown below.
Connecting the iping to the gas control valve of the water heater can Fe
accomplished by either of the two methods shown.
WARNING
Contaminants in the gas lines may cause improper operation of the gas control
valve that may result in fire or explosion. Before attaching the gas line be
sure that all gas pipe is clean on the inside. To trap any dirt or foreign
material in the gas supply line, a drip leg (sometimes called a sediment trap)
must be incorporated in the piping. The drip leg must be readily accessible.
Install in accordance with the “Gas Piping” section. Refer to the latest
edition of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI! Z223.1, also referred to as NFPA
54.

Lighting
WARNING
BEFORE LIGHTING PROPANE (L.P)} GAS WATER HEATERS:
Propane (L.P) gas is heavier than air. Should there be a leak in the system,
the gas will settle near the ground. Basements, crawl spaces, skirted areas
under mobile homes (even when ventilated), closets and areas below ground
level will serve as pockets for the accumulation of this gas. Before
attempting to fight or relight the water heater’s pilot or turning on a nearby
electrical light switch, be absolutely sure there is no accumulat- ed gas in
the area. Search for odor of gas by sniffing at ground level in the vicinity
of the appliance. If odor is detected, follow steps indicated at “For Your
Safety” on the cover page of this manual then leave the premises.
Lighting and operating instructions are located on front of the water heater,
above or to one side of the gas control valve.

Temperature Regulation
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the water tem- perature in
certain situations may vary up to 30°F higher or ower at the point of use such
as, bathtubs, showers, sink, etc.
This means that when the temperature adjustment dial is set at the mark
approximating 120°F, the actual water temperacure at any hot water tap could
be as high as 150°F or as low as 90°F.
Any water heater’s intended purpose is to heat water. Hot water is needed for
cleaning (bodies, Uishes, clothing). Hot water will present a scald hazard
Depending on the time element, and the people involved (normal adults,
children, toddlers, elderly, infirm, etc.) scalding may occur at different
temperatures.
These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physical- ly/mentally
handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits into one of these
groups or if there is a local code or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take
special precautions. In addition to using the lowest possible temperature
setting that satisfies your hot water needs, a means such as a mixing valve,
should be used at the hot water
taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves are available
at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow man- ufacturers instructions for
installation of the valves. Before changing the factory setting on the
thermostat, read the ‘Temperature Regulation” section in this manual.
WARNING
Never allow small children to use a hot water tap, or to draw their own bath
water. Never leave a child or handicapped per- son unattended in a bathtub or
shower.
The thermostat of this water heater has been factory set at its lowest
position, to reduce the risk of scald injury. It is adjustable and must be
reset to the desired temperature setting. The mark (A) indicative of
approximately 120°F is the preferred starting point. Some states Rave a
requirement for a lower setting. If you need hotter water, follow directions
for temperature adjustment, but beware of the warnings in this section.
Turn the water temperature dial clockwise ( ) to decrease the temperature, or counterclockwise ( ) to increase the temperature.
PILOT
LIGHTING – Set here before lighting pilot.
– Is a thermostat setting of approximately 120°F, which will supply hot water
at the most economical temperatures. The tempera- ture adjustment knob can be
turned lower than 120°F if desired.
A —Is a thermostat setting of approximately 130°F.
B — Is a thermostat setting of approximately 140°F
C —Is a thermostat setting of approximately 150°F.
VERY HOT – Is a chermostat setting of 160°F It is recom- mended that the
dial’ be set lower whenever possible.
NOTE: Water temperature range of 120°—140°F recom- mended by most
dishwasher manufacturers.
WARNING
Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to shut off, turn “OFF” the
manual gas control valve to the appliance.
Service and Adjustment
Tank (Sediment) Cleaning
Sediment build-up on the tank bottom may create varying amounts of noise, and
if left in the tank will cause premature tank failure. In some water areas,
you may not be able to drain all sediment deposits by simply drainin the cank.
In these cases Mag Erad (part no. 23600) can be used to help remove the sedi-
ment deposits. This may be ordered from the Sears Service Cencer. For
ordering, refer to the “Parts Order List” section.
Venting System Inspection
At least once a year a visual inspection should be made of the venting system.
You should look for:
- Obstructions which could cause improper venting. The com- bustion and ventilation air flow must not be obstructed.
- Damage or deterioration which could cause improper vent- ing or leakage of combustion products.
- Rusted flakes around top of water heater.
WARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may occur if air for
combustion contains certain chemical vapors.
Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigerator and air conditioner
refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes,
bleach, and process chemicals are typical compounds which are potentially
corrosive.
WARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systems may present a serious health risk or
asphyxiation.
WARNING
Be sure the vent piping is properly connected to prevent escape of dangerous
flue gasses which could cause deadly asphyxiation.
WARNING
if after inspection of the vent system you found sooting or deterioration,
something ts wrong. Call the local gas utility to correct the problem and
clean or replace the flue and venting before resuming operation of the water
heater.
Burner Inspection
WARNING
Do not use this appliance if any part of it has been under water. Immediately
call a Sears Service Technician to inspect the appliance and to replace the
gas control or any part of the burner system which has been under water.
At least once a year a visual inspection should be made of the main burner and
pilot burner. The drawing is for your reference.
You should check for sooting which is not normal and will impair proper
combustion. WARNING
Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correction before further
use. Turn “OFF” gas to water heater and leave “OFF” until repairs are made,
because failure to correct the cause of the sooting can result in a fire or
explosion causing DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
Burner Cleaning
In the event your burner needs cleaning, use the following instructions:
If inspection of the burner shows thar cleaning is required, turn the gas
control knob clockwise ( ) to the “OFF” position, depressing slightly.
NOTE: The knob cannot be turned from “PILOT” to “OFF” unless knob is
depressed slightly. DO NOT FORCE.
Loose deposits on or around the burner can be removed by care- fully using the
hose of a vacuum cleaner inserted through the access door of the water heater.
If the burner needs to be removed for additional cleaning, call the Sears
Service Center to remove and clean the burner and correct the problem that
required the burner to be cleaned.
Draining
The water heater should be drained if being shut down during freezing
temperatures. Also periodic draining and cleaning of sediment from the tank
may be necessary.
-
Turn the gas control knob to the “OFF” position.
-
CLOSE the cold water inlet valve to the water heater.
-
OPEN a nearby hot water faucet and leave open to allow for draining.
-
Connect a hose co the drain valve and terminate to an adequate drain.
-
OPEN the water heater drain valve ro allow for tank draining.
NOTE: If the water heater is going to be shut down and drained for an extended period, the drain valve should be left open with hose connected allowing water to terminate to an adequate drain. -
Close the drain valve.
-
Follow instructions in the “Filling The Wacer Heater” section.
-
Follow the lighting instructions in the “Lighting” section to restart the water heater.
Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve Operation
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually operated at least once
a year. Failure to install and maintain a new properly listed tempera- ture-
pressure relief valve will release the manufacturer from any claim which might
result from excessive temperature or pressure.
WARNING
If the temperature-pressure relief valve on the appliance weeps or discharges
periodically, this may be due to thermal expansion. Your water heater may have
a check valve installed in the water line or a water meter with a check valve.
Consult the Sears Service Center for further informa- tion. Do not plug the
temperature-pressure retief valve.
WARNING
When checking the temperature-pressure relief valve opera- tion, make sure
that (I) no one is in front of or around the outlet of the temperature-
pressure relief valve discharge line, and (2) that the water manually
discharged will not cause any property damage because the water may be
extremely hot. if after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely
reset and continues to release water, immediately close the cold water inlet
to the water heater, follow the draining instructions, and replace the
temperature-pressure relief valve with a new one.
Drain Valve Washer Replacement

Troubleshooting Guide
Start Up Conditions CONDENSATION
Whenever the water heater is filled with cold water, a certain amount of
condensation will form while the burner is on. A water heater may appear to be
leaking when in fact the water is condensation. This usually happens vihen:
- When a new water heater is filled with cold water for the first time.
- When gas burns and water vapor is produced in water heaters, particularly high efficiency models where flue tem- peratures are lower.
- When you use large amounts of hor water in a short time and the refill water is very cold.
Moisture from the products of combustion condense on the cooler tank surfaces
and form drops of water which may fall onto the burner or other hot surfaces
to produce a “sizzling” or “frying” noise.
Excessive condensation can cause pilot outage due to water run- ning down the
flue tube onto the main burner and putting out the pilor.
Because of the suddenness and amount of water, condensation water may be
diagnosed as a “tank leak”. After the water in the tank warms up (about 1-2
hours), the condition should disappear.
Do not assume the water heater is leaking until chere has been enough time for
the water in the tank to warm up.
An undersized water heater will cause more condensation. The water heater must
be sized properly to meet the family’s demands for hot water including
dishwashers, washing machines and shower heads.
Excessive condensation may be noticed during the winter and early spring
monchs when incoming water temperatures are at their lowest.
Good venting is essential for a gas fired water heater to operate properly as
well as to carry away products of combustion and water vapor.
These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physical- lyimentally
handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits into one of these
groups or if there is a local code or state law
requiring 2 certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take
special precautions.
Before changing the factory setting on the
thermostat, read the “Temperature Regulation” section in this manual.
SMOKE/ODOR
It is not uncommon to experience a small amount of smoke and odor during the
initial start-up. This is due to burning off of oil from metal parts, and will
disappear in a short while.
THERMAL EXPANSION
Water supply. systems may, because of high line pressure, fre- quent cut-offs,
the effects of water hammer and others, have installed devices such as
pressure reducing valves, check valves, back flow preventers, etc. to control
these types of problems. When these devices are not equipped with an internal
by-pass, and no other measures are taken, the devices cause the water sys- tem
to be closed. As water is heated, it expands (thermal expan- sion) and closed
systems do not allow for the expansion of heat- ed water.
The water within che water heater tank expands as it is heated and increases
the pressure of the water system. If the relieving point of the water heater’s
temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the valve will relieve the
excess pressure. The tempera- ture-preseure relief valve is not intended for
the constant relief of thermal expansion. This is an unacceptable condition
and must be corrected.
It is recommended that any devices installed which could create a closed
system have a by-pass and/or the system have an expan- sion tank to relieve
the pressure built by thermal expansion in the water system. Expansion tanks
are available for ordering
through the Sears Service Centet. Contact the local plumbing inspector, water
supplier and/or the Sears Service Center for assistance in controlling these
situations.

NOTE: Expansion tanks are pre-charged with a 40 psi air charge. If the
inlet water pressure is higher than 40 psi, the expansion tank’s air pressure
must be adjusted to match that pressure, but must not be higher than 80 psi.
STRANGE SOUNDS
Possible noises due to expansion and contraction of some metal during periods
of heat-up and cool-down do not represent Rermful or dangerous conditions.
Condensation causes sizzling and popping with the burner area during heating
and cooling periods and should be considered normal. See “Condensation”
section.
Operational Conditions
SMELLY WATER
In each glasslined water heater there is installed at least one anode rod (see
parts section) for corrosion protection of the tank, Certain water conditions
will cause a reaction between this rod and the water. The most common
complaint associated with the anode rod is one of a “rotten egg smell”. This
odor is derived from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is
the result oF four factors which must all be present for the odor to develop:
a. aconcentration of sulfate in the supply water.
b. litcle or no dissolved oxygen in the water.
c. a sulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This harmless
bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)
d. an excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is caused by the corrosion
protective action of the anode.
Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater models by
replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material, and then chlorinas
the water heater tank and all hot water lines. Contact Sears Service for
further information concerning an Anode Replacement Kit #9001453 and this
Chlorination Treatment.
If the smelly water persists after the anode replacement and chlo- rination
treatment, we can only suggest that continuous chlori- nation and filtering
conditioning equipment be considered to eliminate the water problem.
Do not remove the anode leaving the tank unprotected. By doing so, all
warranty on the water heater tank is voided.
“AIR” IN HOT WATER FAUCETS
WARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water system that has
not been used for a long period of time {generally two weeks or more).
Hydrogen gas is extremely able and explosive. To prevent the possibility of
injury under these conditions, we recornmend the hot water faucet be opened
for several minutes at the kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which
are connected to the hot water sys- tem are used (such as a dishwasher or
washing machine). If hydrogen gas is present, there will probably be an
unusual sound similar to air escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet
is opened. There must be no smoking or open flame near the faucet at the time
it is open.
HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM
This water heater is equipped with an automatic gas shut off sys- tem. The
high temperature shut off is built into the gas control valve. This system
shuts off the gas supply to the water heater burners when high water
temperatures are present. It is non- resettable. If che high temperature shut
off activates, the gas con- trol valve must be placed | If this were to occur,
turn “OFF” the entire gas supply to the water heater. Contact the Sears
Service Center.
WARNING
Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to shut off, turn “OFF” the
manual gas control valve to the appliance.
NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
-
Check the manual gas shut off valve to be sure it is open.
-
Check the pilot flame. It may have gone out. All models have an opening behind che outer door for viewing the pilot.
-
If the pilot is not lit, follow che “Lighting” instructions in this manual or located above the gas control valve on the water heater co relight the pilor. If che water was extremely hot and is now cold, the high limit safety temperature shut off may have put out the burner and pilot. If the high temperature shut off activates, the control valve must be replaced. Contact the Sears Service enter
-
The gas control knob must be turned to the “ON” position.
-
The temperature adjustment dial may be set too low. See the
-
Temperature Regulation” section.
-
The gas company can check the gas input to see if it is correct.
An underfired water heater will not heat water as quickly. -
Look for leaking or open hot water faucets. Make sure al! are closed.
-
The cold wacer inlet temperature may be colder during the winter months. It will take longer to heat the water and seem like less hot water.
-
If you cannot find what is wrong, call the Sears Service Center.
WATER IS TOO HOT
-
The cemperature adjustment dial may be set too high. See the “Temperacure Adjustment” section.
NOTE: A period of time is necessary after an adjustment has been made for the water temperature to reach the new temperature setting. -
If lower temperacure settings will not lower the water tempera- ture, call che Sears Service Center
WARNING
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the water temperature in
certain situations may be hotter than the thermostat setting.
Short, frequent draws of hot water – especially with very cold incoming water
– can shock the thermostat into brief operation resulting in hotter and hotter
layers of water closer to the top of the tank.
Changes in hot water usage patterns or raising the tem- perature differential
between the cut-on of the thermo- stat and the cold water temperature will
usually eliminate the problem.
Leakage Checkpoints
Use this guide to check a “Leaking” water heater. Many suspect- ed “Leakers”
are not leaking tanks. Often the source of the water can be found and
corrected.
If you are not thoroughly familiar with your local gas codes, your water
heater, and eafety practices, contact the Sears Service Center to check the
water heater. CAUTION
Read this manual first. Then before checking the water heater make sure the
gas supply has been turned “OFF”, and never turn the gas “ON” before the tank
is completely full of water.
CAUTION
Never use this water heater unless it is completely filled with water. To
prevent damage to the tank, the tank must be filled with water. Water must
flow from the hot water faucet before turning “ON” gas to the water heater.
A Water at the draft hood is water vapor which has condensed out of che
combustion products. This is caused by a problem in the vent. Contact he Sears
Service Center.
B Condensation may be seen on pipes in humid weather or pipe
connections may be leaking.
C The primary anode rod fitting may be leaking. Small amounts of water
from the temperacure-pressure
D relief valve may be due to thermal expansion or high water pressure in
your area.
E * The temperature-pressure relief valve may be leaking at the tank
fitting.
F Water from a drain valve may be due to the valve opened slightly.
G* The drain valve may be leaking at the tank ficting.
H Combustion products contain water vapor which can condense on the
cooler surfaces of the tank. Droplets form and drip into the fire or run on
the floor. This is common at the time of startup after installation and when
incoming water is cold.
I** Water in the water heater bottom or on the floor may be from
condensation, loose connections, or che relief valve.
DO NOT teplace the water heater until a full inspection of all possible water
sources is made and necessary corrective steps taken. Leakage from other
appliances, water lines, or ground seepage should also be checked.
NOTE: To check where threaded portion enters tank, insert cotton swab between
jacket opening and fitting. If cotton is wet, follow “Draining” instructions
in the “Service and Adjustment” section and then remove fitting. Pat Pipe dope
or teflon tape on the threads and replace. Then follow “Filling the Water
Heater” instructions in the “Installation Instructions” section.
