PLANTING AND GROWING GUIDE
Quick Reference
Planting Steps
Step 1 Remove bulb from the box and keep in packing materiauntil ready to
plant.
Step 2 Dig a hole about 6-8 inches deep so you can easily place the bulb in
the hole. Place bulbs with roots going into the ground and the pointed end
going upward.
Step 3 You want to place the bulb in the ground deep enough so that the
rounded part of the bulb is in the ground. As the bulb transitions from round
to pointed you will notice a distinct neckline. This neckline will designate
the new soil line.
Step 4 Backfill the hole with soil or potting mix. It is likely that part of
the pointed end will be sticking up out of the ground.
Step 5 Generously water your newly planted bulb.
Plant Caretaking
Upon Arrival: Please take bulbs out of the box and keep in packing materials
until ready to plant. Plant within 2 weeks of receipt.
Planting Depth & Spacing: Dig a deep enough hole so that the entire bulb
easily fits into the hole and that part of the pointed end of the bulb is
sticking out of the ground. Generally digging a 6-8” deep hole will be
sufficient. Space about 2’ apart.
Potted Plants: Make sure your container has holes to allow excess water to
drain. Place one bulb in a 12-15” container, or you may plant multiple
together in a larger container?
Soil Preparation: If you soil is clayish, amend it with standard potting mix
to improve drainage.
Watering: Water your bulb heavily after you have planted it. Then allow it to
show some top growth before watering it again. After that water it on a normal
schedule. These bulbs like to watered regularly while actively growing.
Fertilizer: Use Roberta’s Bounty after you see some top growth occurring from
the bulb.
Pet Considerations: Ensure your pets do not consume plants.
Winterizing: If you live in zones 7-11, you may allow your bulb to stay
outside all year round. If you live in zones colder than zone 7, it is
recommended that you grow you bulb in a pot that you can place in a sheltered
area such as a garage or shed until the nights are consistently above 40F.
Dormancy: These bulbs will have a period of rest after they have finished for
the season. Cut back old flower stems as they finish.
Then once nights start to dip below 45 regularly, cut the foliage back to the
soil. If you are overwintering your bulbs in a container in a sheltered area,
cut all growth back to the soil line.
Mulching: For those that live in zones 7-8, it is helpful to add a 2-3” of
mulch as the weather cools.
Tips for Success
Water: Water your bulbs immediately after planting and then wait until you see
growth emerge before watering again. Once growth begins, these plants love to
be watered regularly.
Time to Plant! Your plants are now ready to be replanted. Follow the planting
guide inside for detailed instructions on how to most effectively plant your
new plants.
Safety: Like many plants in the garden, make sure you do not ingest this
plant. Eating the plant is toxic, both the leaves and bulbs.
Likewise make sure your pets do not ingest either. It can also be a good idea
to wear gloves when pruning or transplanting.
Brown Tips on the Foliage: If this water loving plant is not getting
sufficient water the tips of the foliage may start to turn brown.
Water your plant regularly and deeply to avoid these brown tips.
Crinum: Our Pam Penick Crinum Collection brings a plant that loves the heat
and loves moisture while producing elegant burgundy strap-like foliage and
effervescent cherry pink flowers. Finding the right location for this plant is
easy, and once you do it will continue to grace your garden with beauty for
decades and decades.
