- Compatible with: CH2100P, CH2200P, CH2600P, & CH2700P controls
Description:
The Neutral Start Switch Kit (Part # CA27090P) is designed to provide “start- in-gear protection” for marine engines that use a solenoid for control of the starter motor. It includes all the necessary parts to ensure that the starter motor can only be engaged when the control is in the neutral position.
Features:
- Complies with USCG requirements of 33 CFR Part 183, Subpart L
- Ensures safe starting by preventing the engine from starting in forward or reverse gear
- Easy installation with included wire harness and screws
- Includes a white label to replace the original red label on the control, indicating its ability to provide start-in-gear protection
Installation Instructions
Step 1: Mounting the Switch
- Identify the switch (Item 2) from the kit.
- Place the switch on the control as shown in Figure 1, ensuring that the plunger contacts the stamped metal cam of the control when it is in the neutral position.
- If needed, the switch can be mounted on the right side instead of the left side (as shown in Figure 1).
Step 2: Routing Wires
- Route the wires from the switch in a way that they do not come in contact with the cable or moving parts of the control.
- If necessary, secure the wires using appropriate clips or ties to ensure they are safely positioned.
Step 3: Connecting the Switch
Connect the wires of the switch as follows:
- Connect one wire of the switch to the “start” terminal on the ignition switch.
- Connect the other wire of the switch to the positive terminal of the starter solenoid (refer to Figure 2).
Warning:
Ensure that the connections are made securely and that all electrical connections are properly insulated to prevent any short circuits or accidental contact.
Step 4: Label Replacement
- Locate the red label on the control that states it does not provide start-in-gear protection.
- Replace the red label with the white label provided in the kit (Item 5), which states that the control provides start-in-gear protection.
- If no red label is present, install the white label on any clean, smooth surface of the control.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
Q1: What is the purpose of the Neutral Start Switch Kit?
A1: The Neutral Start Switch Kit is designed to provide “start-in-gear protection” for marine engines by allowing the starter motor to be engaged only when the control is in neutral. This prevents accidental starting in forward or reverse gear. -
Q2: Can I use this kit with any marine engine?
A2: This kit is specifically designed for marine engines that use a solenoid for control of the starter motor. It is essential to use the kit as instructed and not substitute any parts. -
Q3: How do I check if the installation is correct?
A3: After installation, try starting the engine at all gear lever positions. If the engine starts in either forward or reverse positions, check the connection at the ignition switch and ensure it is properly connected.

INSTALLATION
- This kit contains necessary parts to provide ‘start-in-gear protection’ by allowing the starter motor to be engaged only when the control is in ‘neutral’.
- Use this kit only with marine engines that use a solenoid for control of the starter motor. Do not substitute parts.
- Place the switch (item 2) on the control as shown in figure 1 so that the plunger contacts the stamped metal cam of the control while the control is in the neutral position.

- Route the wires so they will not in any way come in contact with the cable or moving parts of the control. If necessary, the switch can be mounted on the right side (left-side mounting shown in Figure 1). Connect one wire of the switch to the ‘start’ terminal on the ignition switch and the other to the positive terminal of the starter solenoid (see Figure 2 and warning).
- Locate the red label on the control stating “this control will not provide start-in-gear protection…” and replace it with the white label provided in this kit (item 5) which states “this control will provide start-in-gear protection…“.
- This is done to comply with United States Coast Guard regulations (33 CFR part 183, subpart L) which requires controls to identify its ability to provide start-in-gear protection.
- If no red label is present then install the white label on any clean, smooth surface of the control.
WARNING!
Connection to the ground (–) terminal of the solenoid will short-circuit and
destroy this switch.
Check for correct operation by trying to start the engine at all gear lever positions. If the engine starts in either forward or reverse positions, check the connection at the ignition switch.
