EMERSON VCIMD-16333 Spence Type TAV Thermostatic Air Vent
WARNING
Failure to follow these instructions or to properly install and maintain this
equipment could result in an explosion, fire, and/or chemical contamination
causing property damage and personal injury or death.
Type TAV vent must be installed, operated, and maintained in accordance with federal, state, and local codes, rules and regulations, and Emerson instructions. If a leak develops in the system, service to the unit may be required. Failure to correct trouble could result in a hazardous condition. Installation, operation, and maintenance procedures performed by unqualified personnel may result in improper adjustment and unsafe operation. Either condition may result in equipment damage or personal injury. Only a qualified person shall install or service the Type TAV Thermostatic Air Vent.
Introduction
Scope of the Manual
This manual provides instructions for the operation and installation of a Type
TAV thermostatic air vent.
Product Description
Type TAV is a high-capacity thermostatic air vent. Its balanced pressure design stainless steel welded actuator is capable of discharging air within 35°F / 2°C of saturated temperature. Thermostatic actuator employs a conical valve lapped in matched sets with the seat ring assuring tight shut off. Vent are stainless steel bodied suitable for pressures to 650 psig / 45 bar and available in NPS 3/8 to 1 / DN 10 to 25 with NPT or socket weld connections.

The pressure/temperature limits in this Instruction Manual and any applicable standard or code limitation should not be exceeded.
Principle of Operation
The thermal actuator is filled at its free length with a liquid having a
boiling point lower than water. As assembled, the valve is normally open. On
startup, air passes through the vent. As air is eliminated, hot steam reaches
the vent and the thermal actuator fill vaporizes to a pressure higher than
line pressure. This forces the valve into the seat orifice to prevent any
further flow. When the air collected increases, it takes heat from the
actuator, lowering internal pressure. Line pressure will then compress the
thermal actuator to open the valve and discharge air. The valve lift
automatically adjusts
to variations.
Installation
WARNING
Personal injury, property damage, equipment damage, or leakage due to
escaping steam or bursting of pressure-containing parts may result if this
vent is over-pressured or is installed where service conditions could exceed
the limits given in the specifications or where conditions exceed any ratings
of the adjacent piping or piping connections.
To avoid such injury or damage, provide pressure-relieving or pressure- limiting devices (as required by the appropriate code, regulation or standard) to prevent service conditions from exceeding those limits.
Type TAV thermostatic air vent is installed on the downstream side of the steam trap.
Maintenance
The Type TAV thermostatic air vent is a sealed unit making it maintenance- free. It is composed of corrosion-resistant stainless steel components and an impingement plate with welded construction to prevent damage to the actuator. No bolts, gaskets or adjustments are necessary. Replacement traps cost less than repair of more expensive in-line repairable vents.
