SEASONAL AND HOLIDAY LIGHTS
INTRODUCTION
This leaflet provides guidance on the purchase, inspection, installation, and
use of Seasonal and Holiday lighting sets. Modern Seasonal and Holiday
lighting sets are safe to use if simple checks are taken. It is obvious but
necessary to say, only use outdoor lights outdoors. If young children are
around use Extra low voltage lights (24 or 12 Volts). Outdoors also use Extra
low voltage lights unless you are going to make sure they are installed well
out of reach of everyone. If you are going to put mains voltage lights
outdoors protect them and everyone else by using a plug-in RCD. These are the
devices you need when using a lawnmower or hedge trimmer. Electric lamps are
much much safer than candles, go electric, no candles on your tree or anywhere
near it. You may know they are just for show but someone else during the
festivities might think lighting the candles is a
great idea. Go electric. Have you got young people in the house? Have you a
working smoke alarm? Have you tested it? Go on, do it now, you know it makes
sense. Then go and buy a battery, it is so very necessary for a happy Holiday.
First the smoke alarm, then the fancy decorations!
Visual inspections
New Seasonal and Holiday lighting sets should be checked and inspected in
accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions provided with the set.
Don’t throw away the box, keep it to store the lighting sets in, it may have
information on buying replacement lamps. Older sets, which may have been
hurriedly dismantled following the previous year’s festivities and stored for
12 months, need to be carefully checked for any damage to the lamps (light
bulbs), lamp holders, and conductors (wires).
The following are examples of items that should be checked before plugging in
the set to the mains. The flexible cable and lamp holders: is the cable in
good condition? is it free from cuts, fraying, and damage? are the connections
at each lamp holder sound? are the lampholders free from cracks or damage,
that might give access to the live cable or live contacts of the lamps?
The lamps: are they all in place, undamaged, properly screwed, or pushed in?
The plug/transformer
Check that the plug is not damaged.
Look for signs of overheating.
Check the fuse (if any), and make sure it is the correct rating.
IF ANY DOUBT, HAVE THE SET CHECKED BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN BEFORE USE OR
SCRAP AND PURCHASE A NEW SET.
Where the set is intended to be connected to the supply via a ‘plug-in
transformer’, only use the transformer supplied with the set. Otherwise, if
the output voltage does not match the voltage of the lamps overheating may
result.
Functional Tests
After the visual inspection and correcting any faults found, including
tightening of lamps and replacement of broken or missing lamps, plug in and
switch on the lamp set.
Replace any faulty lamps with ones of the same voltage rating and manufacture,
check the box for details. Spare lamps are usually provided with the set.
Lamps should not be removed or installed with the supply on.
Only replace ‘fused’ lamps (sometimes identified by a white mark on the glass)
with identical ‘fused’ lamps.
Installation of Christmas Tree
Christmas trees because of the pine oils, and particularly after being in a
heated room for a week or two, are very flammable. Tree decorations may also
be flammable and should be kept clear of the lamps as far as possible.
Christmas trees should be mounted securely so that they are unlikely to fall
over or be knocked over by children or pets. They must be kept clear of heat
sources, including spot lamps and particularly CANDLES. Take care when
decorating the tree, use a stepladder if the tree is tall, and wear shoes.
Many more accidents are caused by treading on plugs and lamps with bare feet
than faulty electrical equipment.
Guidance for Seasonal and Holiday lighting sets.
Follow these and any other instructions provided by the manufacturer, it is
for your safety.
- Install the lighting chains so that there is easy access to the socket outlet so that the lights can be turned off when you go out or go to bed. Never leave lighting chains on when you go out or go to bed.
- Do not remove or insert lamps while the lighting chain is connected to the supply.
- For series-connected lamps other than those in sealed lighting chains, replace failed lamps immediately with lamps of the same rated voltage and wattage to prevent overheating; this requirement does not apply to sealed lighting chains.
- Do not connect the chain to the supply while it is in the packing.
- For series-connected lamps where fused lamps are used, do not replace a fused lamp with a non-fused lamp.
- Ensure all lamp holders are fitted with a lamp.
- Ordinary lighting chains marked for indoor use shall not be used outdoors.
- Lighting chains that rely on gaskets to provide protection against the ingress of dust and moisture must not be used without all gaskets being in place.
- Make sure to follow the markings regarding the series and parallel connection of lighting strings.
- Only replace ‘fused’ lamps (sometimes identified by a white mark on the glass) with identical ‘fused’ lamps.
- For non-standard lamps (e.g. lamps of push-in type) replacement lamps must be of the same types as those delivered originally or a type specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not attempt to replace nonreplaceable lamps.
