Your new Valor kerosene heater has been carefully designed and built to give you safe, efficient heating at a sensible cost. To get the most out of your new heater, read these instructions carefully before use.

HEAT OUTPUT
CAN HEAT A 12′ X 12′ TO 12′ X 15′ ROOM TO A COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE.

UNPACKING

Take the heater out of the box and make sure no damage has occurred since leaving the factory. If there is any damage, DO NOT USE THE HEATER but return it to your dealer. Check the diagrams for identification
and the location of the parts.

SAFETY DEVICE
This heater has a patented Safety Device that automatically shuts off the flame if the heater is tilted. The resetting lever is located on the right side of the chimney (fig. 3). To re-set, turn the lever clockwise until it locks.

SETTING UP

Remove the chimney from the tank assembly by turning counter-clockwise for about a quarter of a turn and lift clear. Remove the tank from the cabinet and fill it with kerosene until the “E”. “½” and “F” on the fuel
indicator become dark. Caution: ONLY use kerosene. NEVER use the gas line. Wipe off any spills and set the filled tank on newspaper for at least one hour to allow proper soaking of the wick and to check for leaks. If a
leak should show up, DO NOT USE THE HEATER, return it to the dealer.

LIGHTING

After the wick has soaked for an hour, return the tank assembly to the cabinet and make sure it is firmly seated. Turn the wick up to cover the bottom 2 rows of holes on the flame spreader and light the wick in several
places. Fig. 3. Check that the safety device is reset and carefully replace the chimney, turning clockwise to lock it with the window facing frontwards. When the flame has fully circled the wick, it can be adjusted to the desired height. The burner is designed to operate with a blue flame, NOT yellow or white which can happen if the wick is set too high or too low. Incorrect wick settings can cause smoking and odor.

MAXIMUM HEAT
Turn the wick up until white peaks are just beginning to show on top of the blue flame. Turn no higher.

MINIMUM HEAT
Turn the wick down to give the minimum blue flame.

TO EXTINGUISH
Turn the wick all the way down. If a flame remains, blow across the top of the chimney. DO NOT USE THE SAFETY DEVICE FOR NORMAL EXTINGUISHING as this can damage the wick and cause odor.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

  1. Store the kerosene in a clean container and make sure no water contaminates it.
  2. Don’t overfill the tank. Wipe up all spills.
  3. NEVER cover the outlets on the cabinet.
  4. Make sure the tank is properly seated in the cabinet.
  5. Make sure all parts are firmly screwed down. Don’t use the heater if the burner parts are damaged.
  6. Use only Valor wicks and parts. Replace damaged or worn parts promptly.
  7. Never allow the unit to burn dry.

WARNING

  • Use only kerosene. NEVER USE GASOLINE. Do not mix anything with the kerosene.
  • Do not carry when lit.
  • Make sure the room is VENTILATED. There must be some air entering the room for safe efficient operation.
  • Extinguish the flame before refilling.
  • Place the heater where it will be free of drafts and cannot be accidentally hit. Do not put near flammable materials. Do not place fabrics on the heater for drying.
  • If there are young children or animals in the house, it is advisable to fix the heater in place using the holes provided in the bottom of the cabinet (fig. 5)

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

TO LIGHT BURNER
UNLOCK CHIMNEY AND REMOVE. TURN UP WICK TO EXPOSE 3mm (&°) AND LIGHT IN SEVERAL PLACES. REPLACE CHIMNEY AND LOCK IN POSITION WITH WINDOW FACING FRONT, ENSURING
SAFETY MECHANISM IS FIRST RESET. ADJUST THE FLAME AFTER IT HAS ENCIRCLED WICK. BURN ONLY WITH A BLUE FLAME. TO EXTINGUISH TURN THE WICK RIGHT DOWN (BLOW ACROSS THE TOP OF THE CHIMNEY IF FLAME REMAINS).

IMPORTANT

  • ENSURE SAFETY MECHANISM IS RESET BEFORE LIGHTING (SEE ILLUSTRATION).
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THE SAFETY MECHANISM FOR NORMAL EXTINGUISHING OTHERWISE SMELL OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.
  • SEE THE INSTRUCTION LEAFLET FOR COMPLETE INFORMATION.
  • USE ONLY VALOR “YALMIN” WICKS.

WARNING

  • DO NOT CARRY WHEN ALIGHT.
  • ENSURE THE ROOM IS VENTILATED BUT PROTECT THE HEATER FROM DRAUGHTS.
  • USE ONLY PARAFFIN (KEROSENE). NEVER USE PETROL
  • DO NOT REFILL THE HEATER WHEN ALIGHT.
  • PLACE HEATER WHERE IT CAN NOT BE OVERTURNED AND AWAY FROM
  • MATERIALS THAT CAN EASILY CATCH FIRE.

MAINTENANCE

Cleaning Casing: Use warm, soapy water inside and out. Regularly re-move fluff which may accumulate inside. Cleaning Burner: This should only be necessary after a very long period of use. Wipe the parts carefully, paying particular attention to the formations.

Cleaning Wick: When the flame becomes uneven and spikey, the wick must be cleaned and re-shaped using the wick cleaner provided. To use the wick cleaner, remove the flame spreader insert the cleaner into the draft tube (fig. 6), and raise the wick until it (gently) touches the cleaner. Twist the wick cleaner clockwise a few times and remove it. Don’t overdo or the wick will become frayed. Wipe or blow away any debris and replace the flame spreader.

Uneven Wick: If the wick becomes so uneven that the normal cleaning operation has no effect, it will have to be charred. To char the wick remove the tank from the heater, empty the kerosene, and light the wick. Adjust to an average flame and allow it to burn out. This is a somewhat smelly operation so it is best done outdoors or in an outbuilding. Refill the tank and allow the wick to soak for one hour then use the wick cleaner as mentioned above. If the wick is in very bad condition or will not wind up high enough, it must be replaced with a new Valmin Wick.

Remove the flame spreader and unscrew and remove the gallery and gasket. Turn the old wick up as far as it will go and pull out of the reservoir. Fit the wick applicator (that comes with the new wick) on top of the central draft tube. Place the split end of the new wick over the wick applicator. Line up the slots on the wick rack with the gear in the tank and push down until the gear engages. Turn the wick down slowly and remove the wick applicator. Replace the gallery, gasket, and flame spreader. Allow the new wick to soak for at least ½ hour before lighting.
