SIDERAIL SAFETY NOTICE
Reha-bed recommends the use of Reha-bed side rails with Reha-bed beds.
The Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has highlighted
potential areas of risk which are listed below, together with their
recommended actions.
RISK | ACTION |
---|
Entrapment and asphyxiation Beds fitted with bed side rails pose a potential
risk of death from entrapment and asphyxiation| All staff responsible for the
purchase, selection for use, positioning, and adjusting of bed side rails
should be aware of the potential risk of entrapment and asphyxiation when a
bed is occupied. Care must be taken when positioning and adjusting bed side
rails to ensure that any spaces between the bed siderails, mattress or bed
frame will not allow entrapment of the occupant’s head or body. In addition,
consideration should be given to the size and physiological condition of the
occupant and an assessment undertaken to ensure that the spacing between the
bars of the bed side rails is not wide enough to present a potential risk of
entrapment and asphyxiation. All staff responsible need to be aware that
increased vigilance is required when nursing patients in beds fitted with bed
siderails.
Bed side rail incompatibility| All staff responsible for the purchase,
selection for use, positioning and adjusting of bed siderails should be aware
of the potential risk of entrapment and asphyxiation when a bed is occupied.
Bed siderails should be checked for compatibility with the beds they are being
fitted to so that only the correct type of bed siderails are used. If in
doubt, contact your supplier. Staff and carers need to ensure that procedures
are in place at the time of fitting, allowing bed siderails to be assessed in
conjunction with the bed and the occupant to determine if any risk of
entrapment exists (consideration should be given to the occupant’s physical
size).
