System Commissioning

NOTICE

LOSS OF SERVICE
Complete all mandatory commissioning steps before putting system into operation.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in a failed fault location.

Note: At power up, if no channels are commissioned, the channel LEDs start to sequentially flash. This indicates that the device has automatically entered into commissioning mode.
The device auto-detects toroid’s in commissioning mode.
Performing commissioning is mandatory when you:

  • Install a new device.
  • Install one or more toroid to an installed device.
  • Remove one of more toroid from an installed device.
  • Replace the toroid with a different type.(Example: Replace TA30 type by PA50 type)
  • Replace the device.

Performing commissioning is not required when you reconnect or replace a toroid with the same type of toroid.
Note: The device automatically exits commissioning mode after one hour if manual exit is not performed.

the device is in commissioning mode
and start detecting the toroid’s.| Device continues in toroid’s detection mode for 16s. Device  auto-detects the toroid’s and the corresponding channel
LEDs flash.| Press and hold the Reset button
until the LEDs stop to flash. This
indicates that the device has exited
commissioning mode.

Optional: You can check the correctness of all toroid’s wiring during commissioning.
To check, perform the following steps after the device auto-detects the toroid’s (step 3) during commissioning.

  1. Induce a zero-impedance fault on the first connected channel. This fault must be induced downstream of the toroid monitoring that channel.
    • Verify that the fault-induced channel LED is ON (stops to flash).
    • Verify that the relay changes state.

  2. Remove the induced zero-impedance fault.
    • Verify that the fault-induced channel LED flashes to indicate a transient fault.
    • Verify that the relay changes state.

  3. Repeat step 1 and 2 for every connected channel.

System Configuration

10a IM400 Configuration

Perform the following network settings on the IM400 (based on firmware version) to enable compatibility with the IFL12/IFL12L:
Note: You need to perform these settings again when you perform factory reset on the IM400.

Troubleshooting

Issue Cause Solution
IM400 detecting fault, the device is not The device threshold is set to a
lower insulation level than the IM400 threshold. Increase the threshold (from

low to medium, or from medium to high) on the device. See section 10b Configuring IFL12/IFL12L threshold and filtering.
There are faults on the same phase on several feeders and insufficient signal to locate fault with the selected device threshold.
Fault is on an ungrounded system location not monitored by the device, such as the bus between the branches.| Check for insulation fault upstream of the device with the mobile fault location kit.
IM400 network settings not configured for compatibility with the device.| Ensure that IM400 network settings is configured as per section 10a IM400 configuration.
Device alarming but IM400 not detecting fault| The device threshold is set to a higher insulation level than the IM400 threshold.| Decrease the threshold (from high to medium, or medium to low) on the device. See section 10b Configuring IFL12/IFL12L threshold and filtering.
Ungrounded system insulation may have changed over time or under different conditions.| Review insulation resistance history on the IM400 and identify if its threshold needs changes.
IM400 network settings not configured for compatibility with the device.| Ensure that IM400 network settings is configured as per section 10a IM400 configuration.
Alarm relay behavior inverted (off when should be on, or vice versa)| Incorrect relay wiring| Change relay wiring to provide the expected relay behavior.
Alarm still on even after fault fixed| Second fault exists on indicated branch circuit (same live conductor, same feeder)| Check and correct the second fault.
Nuisance alarms| Highly disturbed ungrounded power systems with potential power quality issues| Configure Filtering on option to increase insulation measurement durations. See section 10b Configuring IFL12/IFL12L threshold and filtering.
Slow device response time| Filtering on option is configured.| Configure Filtering off option to increase response time. See section 10b Configuring IFL12/IFL12L threshold and filtering.
No channel LEDs flashing when the Test button is pressed| Commissioning is not yet performed| Perform the commissioning. See section 9 system commissioning.
No toroid’s detected during commissioning| Check the toroid’s wiring to the device and perform the commissioning. See section 9 system commissioning.
