The FuelTech CAN Updater is a software tool developed by FuelTech USA. It is used to update the firmware of Fuel Tech modules via a USB-CAN Converter. Product Usage Instructions
- Insert the FuelTech CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
- Open “My Computer” and access the CAN Updater folder on the CD.
- If you are using Windows XP, double-click on “SetupCanUpdater_x.xx_webinstall.exe”. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, right-click on “SetupCanUpdater_x.xx_webinstall.exe” and select “Run as Administrator”.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the .NET Framework if prompted. Wait for the installation to finish.
- Once the installation is successful, a FuelTech CAN Updater icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click on it to start the CAN Updater software.
- Connect the USB-CAN Converter to your computer’s rear USB ports. Avoid using front USB ports as they may have assembly errors or defects due to frequent use.
- If you are using a notebook, make sure to use USB ports where the USB-CAN Converter fits firmly. A bad contact during the update process could corrupt data on the FT module. If data corruption occurs, it can only be repaired at the factory.
- To update a FuelTech module, ensure that the software is installed and the USB-CAN Converter is connected properly. Follow the instructions provided by the CAN Updater software.
- In case of any error during the update process, such as a bad contact or power loss, disconnect the USB-CAN Converter from both the computer and the FT module.
- Close the CAN Updater software and then open it again.
- Reconnect the USB-CAN Converter and the FT module.
- Try to update again. If the error persists, the software will automatically generate a log file located at “C:Program FilesFuelTechFuelTech CAN UpdaterLog_UpdaterCan.txt”.

FuelTech CAN Updater Software Install Guide
Insert the FuelTech CD into the CD-ROM drive. Go to “My Computer” and access the “CAN Updater” folder on the CD.
- Windows XP: Double-click on
- SetupCanUpdater_x.xx_webinstall.exe”.
- Windows 7 or Vista: right click on
- SetupCanUpdater_x.xx_webinstall.exe” and select “Run as Administrator”.
- Select the software language;
Follow on-screen instructions to install the .NET Framework (in case a message is shown). Otherwise, just wait for the installation to finish. When the installation is successful a FuelTech CAN Updater icon will be created at the Desktop. Double-click it to start the CAN Updater software
Connecting the USB-CAN Converter on the Computer
- Only connect the USB-CAN Converter after the installation of the software, following the steps above.
- Use the rear USB ports of your computer, because front USB ports are more susceptible to assembly errors or defects due to frequent use.
On notebooks, use only USB ports where the USB-CAN Converter fits firmly, a bad contact during the update process could corrupt data on the FT module. This repair could only be done at the factory.
Updating an FT on FuelTech CAN Updater
- Connect the FT module to the USB-CAN Converter.
- Select the correct FT model which you want to update and the desired language
- Click the “Update Firmware” button and wait for the updating process to finish. Avoid moving the module and pressing its buttons during the update process.
Error during Update
In case of any error during the update process due to bad contact, power loss,
or any other problem, disconnect the USB-CAN Converter from the computer and
from the FT module. Close the CAN Updater software and then open it again, and
reconnect the USB-CAN Converter and the FT module. Try to update again. In
case the error persists, the software will automatically generate a log file
located on C:\Program Files\FuelTech\FuelTech CANUpdater\Log_UpdaterCan.txt.
